Well, although I have registered a long time ago, I have decided to try it out now. But the problem is, it won't let me play. What happens? It loads the login screen and I login. Then it loads the world and everything seems ok for a second or two and then it just throws me out of the application. One of the times it happened I sent an error report. I tried lowering the graphics settings - no help.
Any suggestions?

Tell us about your system configuration, and we can probably help. At the very least:
Type of computer (Example Lenovo T-27 laptop) OS version (Example: Windows XP Service Pack 2) : RAM installed : Video card video ram Version of SL client you're trying to use

The post below yours will refute your second claim. There are many people who can help with technical questions. I agree though to not expect much Official Help from LL on the matter.

same issue
10-13-2008 08:28
I'm also brand new to SL, downloaded and installed the game today and have an identical issue... the longest I've spent in game so far is 30 seconds. I'm running Windows XP SP3 (32 bit) in a tower, with an Athlon 64 3700+ processor, 2gig Ram, 160gig Sata HD (mostly free space), Radeon HD 2600 512mb Graphics, 550w psu also... should all be sufficiant to run SL? I have no firewalls active (tried all that) on either the pc or router, and the OS itself is in pretty good condition (no other issues i'm aware of at least) infact I can play WoW at 1400x900 for many many hours no issue. So i'm pretty confused now and don't know where to head... prefer to at least try Second Life before I give up on it. Help please Edit 1.20.17.98669 Version of SL btw

I've tried getting an older version but when you try to login it stops you and says you must get the 1.20.17 version .Ihave not been able to logon to SL since.

If you have the latest ATI drivers, that may be your problem. I've had to stick with the driver two updates old now because every time I've updated, SL has developed an instant crash error.. I'm using the 8.7 drivers now. Anything above that is crashtastic.

If your software crashes shortly after the login this can have some reasons, not that many and we should find the way to fix this ...pretty soon. 1. At first I want you to check the HD disk space. How many MB or GB free disk space do you have on your drive or partition? If there is not enough free space the application shuts down (crash)! In this case I think thats your problem. If not....contact me over Windows Messenger and I will help you step by step. See my profile and click on the smal icon to contact me... I am online

You're using the for the purpose of spamming FUD. And we have no idea if the OP's problem was solved or not because they've only posted once, ever. Go back to the teen grid!!

I still haven't tried anything but I guess it could be either the ATI drivers or the operating system I am using that is causing the issue. Right now I am really not in the mood for investigating all my computer software and hardware to find out where the problem actually is. My current hardware is: MB: Asus M3A78-EH Videocard: INNO 3D Radeon 3850 CPU: AMD 5000+ RAM: 2x1 GB DDR2 OS: Windows Server 2003 (don't ask why I have this on a home computer - it's my husband's "fault" I may try though to change my ATI drivers to a lower version a bit later. P.S. You know what?? I might actually just leave this game for now until it has a better working version released - I wouldn't risk changing my drivers to a lower version because I don't want to have problems with other applications that I use. So, for a couple of months or maybe a year, I will forget about Second Life and try other virtual worlds.

Ok. Let's imagine for just a second I am noob, but I cannot see where the problem is with the requirements and my computer.
P.S. Great - decided to run it again - from curiousity - turns out there is a new version - now I can just see "detecting hardware" and then it just crashes. Even worse than it was before.

There might be something useful on this page: http://win2k3.msfn.org/I see there's something about graphics acceleration being disabled by default on Windows Server. That sounds like something that would be very bad for SL.

We have fixed this issue and a few other issues thanks to the very same link you gave. What I have been told of Windows Server 2003 is that it is the same as XP but more stable and actually some of the default options in the registry are different.
I wish it would give me a message why it crashed - it would make things much easier.

No - I meant we fixed the "graphics acceleration" issue and a few others with this website - and it was a long time ago. It doesn't solve my SL problem though.

OK. I made another try with one of the versions listed in this site: http://my.opera.com/boylane/blog/And it got me "way" further in the world - I could choose either to enable or disable voice chat. I disabled it, clicked finish and voila! It crashed again.

Hi Menyanthe, that means it loads at least. I still don't understand why the normal viewer doesn't go that far and crashes earlier. One thing you could try, you have a powerful machine and I got SL successfully running in a virtual machine. Thats Virtualbox. Comes for free from Sun these days. You would still need an XP installation inside, comes also for free for 30 days. Not sure if it would be playable tho. Perhaps the problem is really with Server 2003. Difficult to tell. But harddisks space is cheap, ask your hubby to make the thing dual boot with XP . Good luck!

I read a bit up about the server version. There is an issue with DirectX that you need to enable manually: Q: Why doesn't DirectX acceleration work in Windows Server 2003? A: There are two correct answers for this question: Official Answer: This is by design. Graphics Acceleration is disabled by default, which disables DirectX functionality. This is to enhance server stability and is not needed in standard server scenarios. Re-enabling such functionality is not a valid server testing scenario. Unofficial Answer: To enable Direct X, you must first enable graphics acceleration. To do this, right click on the desktop and go to Properties, Settings, Advanced, Troubleshooting, and set the Hardware acceleration bar to Full. To activate Direct3D and DirectDraw (DirectX), go to Start/Run and type "dxdiag". Click OK. Click on the Display tab, then click on the Enable button for DirectDraw and Direct3d. I believe SL uses OpenGL for it's graphics and not DirectX or DirectDraw. You might want to check your graphics card settings to make sure that Open GL is enabled. Another thing to check would be the way the Server 2003 is setup. It might be configured to use maximum resources for 'background applications'. That would make SL run very poorly. Your hubby should know how to check that.
