1.7 preview grid hasnt even been established. It will have currency and an economy. 1.6.x has had currency disabled for now. Neat! looking forward to this. _____________________

The Lindens are familiar with me.
06-10-2005 04:57
Gosh that sucks -- actually you know, that may have been related to a memory leak thing which the Lindens are aware of and have been working on fixing. Next time you're on, if the problem still keeps up, I'd recommend asking a Liaison about it and go from there. How many times have you asked before? ![]() I have reported this problem time and time again. I'm told we have some sort of bug, but is it fixed. NO, No one gives me information unless I totally bug them, and then it is limited. I don't understand why fixing a memory leak, a bug, what ever the excuse is this week, can take weeks to fix. Where is the customer service? |

I am new, pretty overwhelmed by all the stuff, and right now just wandering around the place. I am willing to test if you need feedback from folks like me.

Memory Leak problem

This probably isn't helpful, but being a programmer for many years I can tell you that a memory leak is one of the hardest problems to debug. It usually involves the locking of memory for a time sensitive activity and then jumping out of that section of code without releasing it. A lot of times it's caused by some other error that forces the jump out and is very difficult to reproduce. But I bet the Lindons are working their butts off to find it since it also is one of the main contributors to crashes on PC's. Walkin Zadoq |

True Walkin, doubly hard for their server code since its on Linux.
I know of a couple tools we use at work to investigate this (Purify/Quantify is a well-known one), but is not open source, and possibly not available for Linux; In our case is Solaris. I think the 'lint' tool can also help in finding these, but canna remember since I've never been involved in large C projects. Getting back on-topic: Vektor, please lemme know when you're next ready to have a meet for 1.7 planning or to start its testing. _____________________

Soon, Alan, very soon.
Also, for those making unrelated posts in this thread: I will be purging all threads of unrelated content shortly. Please do not misuse the Preview 1.7 forum area...I would ask that any topics that are started here that are not pertinent be moved to other areas in the forums. Preview 1.7 absolutely is not a thread for feature suggestions. This thread is also not for customer service related issues. Please direct your energies to the appropriate areas for those types of discussions. Thanks! Vektor. |

For those of us who are group-impaired (like people who run in world businesses) could the meeting be announced on the forums as well as in the 1.7 preview group?

LL would have to pay minimum wage. Big lawsuit a number of years ago where a game company payed the testers some small gratuity amount, and the testers came back and wanted a bigger piece of the pie (and won). Think it was Ultima Online. wow thats just messed up how u gonna ask to test a game them want more money like u created it. what bought if they did something like those ppl that bug you in the mall to test products lol except instead a mall they did it online. so u would sign something so u couldnt sue.. ppl in this world are jus sue happy. oh and in the next update (on the note of what this thread reallie is for) could it be possiavle for when game to logon it could say how much useable ram u have or something i dunno i crash alot. or maybe a button that would scan your comp and recomened upgrades that would make your game run better. not recoming a spefic brand or anything that would consute as advertisement but jus what parts that would help the gamer. ty and sorry for the misspellin anyone that knows me in any the games i play know i jus cant spell lol Sorry again ![]() |

When will the 1.7 preview be out? Haven't heard much else about it lately. Last I read it would be very soon, but that was back in June.

Whaaaa?
08-16-2005 09:21
Wow. Being a builder and scripter and having just heard of this 1.7 preview, I'm actually pretty scared about what would become of my business. My one concern is the compatability. I wouldn't be very happy if my newly-purchased or newly-built aircraft goes on the fritz - Can we expect any major changes in the physics engine or scripting?
(P.S.: I'd like to help out whereever I can with the 1.7 preview testing. ![]() |

As a longtime Mac developer (20 years!) currently spending a lot of time in SL, I'd be delighted to help test the next SL version on the Mac. Is there a signup procedure, is there just going to be a come-and-get-it announcement, or...

Wonder, if LL payed testers in Linden dollars as an "incentive" of some type for helping test, instead of "job"/"subcontractor"/"whaterver" relationship paying real-money, wouldn't that get us around the issue? _____________________

I think there was that kind of talk last time from some users, the main argument then is that if you start offering any other reward than the benefit of getting the software early, helping bug test it and with this version put your ideas into the quality assurance tests, then you could be there just for financial gain, submit a few random test reports to qualify and get paid. _____________________

About testing
08-18-2005 11:52
Hi all,
I have helped "marginally" in the past with respect to testing, but I don't have the opportunity to log in as frequently as others do. Many of the tests I could not perform. They required more than one person being there, or they required having funds, or they required you to have another account, or they required too much time (for me) to complete. I suggest that it might be plausible for 'some' tests to be broken into smaller discrete parts. If money is required then there should be adequate money in each account for testing purposes. As far as logging into a second account, I probably will never have one, but if was critical for testing, where you are transferring items etc., then perhaps for testing each person could log in to an alternate account by putting their first_name-2, last_name-2, and their normal password. In one sense a sense, that would effectively double the static amount the population instantly. Some stress issues may show up there with regard to storage. If testing is done well, it is a very complex and methodical in its approach. I remember years ago the six 5" Spiral Notebooks that we created that had 2,487 specific tests (hardware and software) for the communications switches that were being developed. It's not an easy task. The focus, of this forum thread should be on testing and not feature enhancements. regards, wizzie |

As far as the amount of accounts you need yourself then the free second accounts certainly helped for me on their second anniversary. _____________________
