Lag has become a dirty word and simple features now appear to out the window. I have put up for a while the crass greedy coup of our beloved world by the developers. Land prices are beyond the pale, no land for genuine newbies, exorbitant rents, developers covenants "one sided" (would not stand the test of fair contract in the rl) and the lack of ability of searching now for non-covenant land are but a few of the gripes I have. The rich developers who obviously also have the time can sway Lindens opinions. Simple helpful things like knowing when someone is on line or not is now a headache. You wish to contact them and the only way now is to IM them and you find that they are not online. Sending a IM which ends up emailing them must take more data space then was trying to be saved in this move. Teleporting is now a problem - they have to be a friend before TP. But the latest move that has my hackles up is the non ability of finding out owners and creators of objects. If there was a strange object on your land once you could just click on it and find out who was owner and then decide whether to delete or return. But the biggest disadvantage of this is that when travelling around the world - you saw something that you liked and you clicked on it to find out who created it, clicked profile, and so were able to tp to their shop and purchase it - great!! But no more :-( I found a real happiness in second life away from the do gooders, politically correct practitioners, con merchants and so on but now those same people are coming here, somehow influencing changes by Lindens and it is to the detriment of our game and future releases if we don’t draw the line somewhere. Sorry about this and I will now step down from my soap box.

I remember "the good old days"...........and I've only been in SL for a year. Back in those days it was lag in very busy places like the popular clubs or big malls.........not in nearly empty regions and sims like now. You could TP with confidence with only occassional failures which did indeed work the second or third attempt........boy was that a nuasience back then!! LOL Once in a while you would have a "rolling restart" which booted you if you didn't get out of the sim in time.....but you got a warning with a count down so it usually was really your own fault if you got logged out. And you would even be logged out for inactivity........which isn't necessarily a bad thing in my opinion.

Now we have all those new features.......boy aren't we proud? Features like the total number of groups you may join. Oh joy!! It's nice to be able to join a ton of groups but is that really a sought after feature the residents clamored for? We can now group IM.......I love it. But, gee did we sacrifice search so we could chat privately to 15 friends? The problem with introducing features is that sometimes they don't work as expected......they need to be fixed. And if they were fixed then search might work again.......or maybe "unexpected" asset server crashes would not happen so much. You just can't keep pushing out features without addressing the problems those same features create with the rest of the game or system.

And I still want to know who decides what features are "most important"? I mean how many residents really screamed for that feature to hide from your friends online? Sure many like the it and appreciate it........but I wonder how high on the list of wanted new features that really was. My thinking is they are on your friends list.....you don't want them to know you are online then remove them from the list. :) So much new stuff added that is either borked or causes some other feature or ability to become borked. Obiviously Linden Lags has limited CPU power and just as limited bandwidth power to the databases............why push out some "feature" until you can do it right?

Before you jump me about my not knowing what's involved in this vast new "cutting edge" technology I will tell you I don't need to know about all that stuff............I just need to know that it don't work as advertised. And, I'm on pretty darn firm ground on that knowledge. :)

Ahh, the good old days....

Don't get me started on this subject other than I will say this:

What the heck happened to the SL that captivated me?

Most times with the problems in SL, an Etch-A-Sketch is more fun to use...

Teleporting is now a problem - they have to be a friend before TP.

This is a client-side bug which has already been fixed in the previews - it'll be fully fixed in the next Wednesday release, I expect.

From: someone

But the latest move that has my hackles up is the non ability of finding out owners and creators of objects. If there was a strange object on your land once you could just click on it and find out who was owner and then decide whether to delete or return.

You can still do that. There's just another bug - if you right click someone else's object and "edit", you go into edit mode but the object isn't selected. However, you can go ahead and click on the object to select it, and then you will see the owner and creator in the normal way. (This is apparantly related to the new system where you can't "edit linked parts" on other people's objects, which I do dislike, but..)

I think the main people calling for it were social content providers who were also builders. The problem they have basically goes: you make an entertainment venue, or other business of that type. Some people really like it, you manage to build a community, people start logging into SL just to visit your place or meet with you (this especially happens with "subs" who log into SL just to.. well, you know). Those people become your friends. Then one day, while you are busy building the next wonderful new feature of your place, one of those people IMs you and asks you to come hang out. And you are stuck. If you answer no, they'll feel bad you "blew them off" especially since there may be nothing else for them to do but log off, so they'll quit or complain to others, which will eventually kill your community. If you answer yes, then you have to stop your work, and the same thing can happen tomorrow and the next day and so on, so your building never gets done, which also eventually kills your community because it becomes static. I've experienced this, and it's horrible.

On the other hand, if you have "stealth mode" enabled then this doesn't arise. You didn't blow them off, you just weren't around in SL at the time. No problem.

I've never had any trouble finding the creator of an object. You just edit it and bring up the creator's profile. In fact a couple of versions ago they made it even easier, by adding the inspect feature. Now you don't even have to edit. Just right click on someone' object, choose More> More> Inspect. You get to see the Creator of every prim in the linkset and pull up their profile. Even more useful.

The Lindens weren't busy with all the press coverage of Second Life. They tried to make the best of all possible products.

Mabe we can give them a hint. If you like, support my proposal and spread the word here in other posts.

It might help, to get back the SL we experienced over the last years.

Clinton, I don't think that will work, because half (if not most) of the things they are doing now are structural changes to accommodate all the free everyone they invited in from all over the world who can join without even so much as having their e-mail address verified.

If they don't work hard at this, there will be no SL to log into. They are in a horrible catch-up mode as it is. Therefore we suffer.

"So maybe the system will gain so much stabilty that it can handle the masses.

The social network itself will find ways to cope with the noob invasion, i'm pretty sure.

Sounds like a fair deal between Lindens and paying customers.

Otherwise the Lindens will end up with a world full of money-chair users and the paying users are all gone.

We're pretty fed up don't underestimate that."

I know :( but how mch longer can the game take being subjected to the free accounts? but years end, well be at less then 30% prim accounts. WHo is going to pay for all theworkers, hardware etc? Its a preplexing spot we are in and llabs is going to hurt us the paying users even more.

New features keep getting developed because doing so is extremely beneficial to the content market, which gets a surge of innovation and competition every time new functionality is added.

exactly... what good is an Airplane with all the nice gimmicks and Luxury... if it doesn't have any wings to take off with...

This was my last Weekend spent on SL... it's unbearable to play.. or shall i say "bughunt" ?
During the week it's "ok" to log in... but after we had experienced (a friend of mine and me) around 20 differewnt bugs today (and i'm waiting for 1 day without annoying glitches and bugs), not mentioning the lag, we're kinda fed up, and we spend a little fortune on this.. And i doubt i want to stay and "play" much longer... especially when i see Linden Labs develops and develops.. but not repairs really (and i'm not speaking of little tiny glitches, i'm talking about MAJOR bugs)

If this doesn't change SL will soon be a dead end for sure.. i'm not hoping for it.. but i'm afraid it might be the case sooner than we all think... if moone is able to play anymore, no one will play... simple logic

Seconded. Even doing something on a volunteer basis, if it gets large enough, has to be managed like a job... and I don't leave my desk and go to lunch every time someone calls me. Wish I could.

I'm going to put your words in front of me though, and think on them a lot, because I was taking it out of my own hide when I tried to do too much and didn't say no often enough. That's no good either.

At the same time it depresses some of the value of SL to me, when it all starts to look like an unpaid job and no social life for myself anymore. So it's a big juggle and I have no answer.

According to the numbers they released, only about 2% of the current population is premium accounts.

Thats what i read, the increase of people results in lower % of paying users. as freebie account increase.......the % of paying users decrease.so why are the land buying movement? Well you can say its the fake freebies first picking money tree, buying firstland sellling.. droping the account and starting all over again!so many accounts are nolonger active its just not funny anymore. Is this the dream Philip Linden invisioned years ago?

I do have to say that it is give and take though. Back in the good old days, local lighting was pure software and the lag it caused to use it was 10 times as bad. At least with chucking it off to the GPU, the CPU has less to worry about. Back in the day the grouping system was downright horrible, it was either no group/land powers at all or 100% of them at once. So I do give props on the new grouping system. I was iffy about flexi-prims but lately have grown to like them, back in the day prim hair and clothing were rather boring, at least there has been a nice surge in creativity on that. Back in the old days, we had barons who dominated the markets from land to clothing. At least with the large influx of new talent, the barons have to modify their business model to cope with the new competition. Back in the good old days, we were taxed to rez a prim and taxed to keep it in the world, I am glad that is gone. Back in the day we didn't have P2P teleporting, we had telehubs. Telehubs were interesting, imagine finding a nice spot of land really cheap and buying it to only discover the closest TP point was 5 sims away and visitors had to fly to your land over those 5 sims unless they could get offered a TP from someone.

I will admit, back in the day many lag problems weren't here and doing things was easier. But back in the day, innovation in the community was slower due to less population and less competition. Back in the day when you mentioned SL to someone, they either said "WTH is that?" or "Oh! That computer geek's paradise." At least now SL is becoming a meme and it is becoming more recognized in the general population, the main stream media is even paying attention. The surge of new residents is amazing and it will hopefully show LL that they need to do something now, even if that means a total rebuild from the ground up and changing their strategy on things. All companies go through the growing pains that LL is, some do it earlier some do it later. AOL, Microsoft and HP went through growing pains that could have either cost them a lot of money and faith or closed their doors forever. I will be one of the first one's to complain about problems but I will also give LL credit and even agree now that once they get through some of these growing pains, they will be alright and SL will get better again.

heh :)

Actually, I used to be part of the bitch fest. I used to speak my mind about LL and the problems with SL. I came to a point where I realized a few things.

1: If I really hated it that bad, why am I still paying to own land?

2: I signed up for SL, no one forced me to do it. I could purge my inventory and cancel my account without ever looking back. I came to the understanding that the basics of what drew me to SL are still here despite the problems and I do still enjoy being in SL.

3: I am not a programmer. It makes no sense for me to moan about the software when that isn't my expertise. I am very hardware / network oriented, give me a desktop, laptop, server or network to install/fix and that is what I do. My extent of programming is messing around in Visual Studio creating things that have pretty buttons.

4: No reason to spend hours worrying about the problems in SL when instead I could try new things to deal with those problems like make tweaks on my end or build/script in SL in a manner that may reduce any extra lag on other residents as well as myself. As they say, worry is wasteful.

5: There are things I would love to see in SL, technologies that would be amazing when combined with the existing abilities. So I am holding on hope for more advancements to SL.

6: The way I figure it, the main stream corporations aren't blind to the potentials of SL. Competition is around the corner, so if LL doesn't shape up by that time, then I will just ship out. No muss, no fuss.
