Why does SL keep going backwards?

You can major in anything to get into law school. I went to law school with business majors, engineers, a microbiologist, RNs, liberal arts types, you name it. Personally, I majored in English, minored in History. I taught 4th grade for a while and went to law school. So, the answer is yes...I was a liberal arts major but many lawyers have business or scientific backgrounds.

What is your favorite baseball team? I always liked the San Diego Padres and Anaheim Angels - regional favorites. My 7 yr old son is a Dodger now. He is on the little league Dodgers. He plays First Base and bats third in the line up. The dads tell me batting 3rd is good because he is a good hitter. I dunno...I am just glad he enjoys it!! And I guess I am a Dodger fan now.

I wish some of us Forum posters could together in world. I would LOVE to meet some of you!!

"Just because you can't see the bigger picture doesn't mean that SL is not being improved"
Actually I can't SEE a picture - I just see my avitar shuffling along and crashing into rocks.
SL WAS better when I joined. I could fly, walk, talk and be "normal" (twitch twicth)

Yes, and when you joined, there was 1/5th to 1/10th the population. These are largely growing pains.

Susanne, while I don't fully agree with you, I applaud that you here offering suggestions and bringing fresh ideas instead of the usual bickering that alot of us (me included) have fallen to.

Just to add
I am not an old experienced SLer BUT I am "older" than many of you. I JUST WANT SL AS IT WAS - no fancy talk, no compromises, just a free world where we could be who we wanna be. Now I hear people "born" a week ago talking as if they know it all. I am so angry that the world that was so free when I first arrived (only MONTHS ago by real time) has changed because of Wizards and Gremlins arriving and SL accomodating these types. Give me back old sl with no "Vocal ability", no such thing as curved walls, and no sanctimosity - God I hate that! There! I vented. So vent back!

Thank you Jacques, thank you very much. I know full well that not all would agree with me and it would be BORING if they did. I even suspect that many of my solutions may be impracticle or unworkable. I hoped my suggestions and comments might lead to smarter people than me [90% of the Forum posters] to figure out something that would actually (1) solve the problems that we see and (2) prod LL into doing something productive while they keep up the honest to God work on bringing us this immensely entertaining virtual world.

I've been as guilty of bicking as anybody. I just got sick of it, its generally counter productive and a waste of time. I wanted to do something productive.....for a change.

I must say that if any of your ideas come to pass - and they are good ones - it will be the FIRST time that Lindens have listened to anybody on this chat site (and I pay a significant amount of US dollars to be here each month so I think I have credibility.)

I am a Die Hard New York Mets Fan. They are my nieghborhood team. My fondest childhood memories were of my older brother taking me to games at Shea Stadium,(and sneaking me a beer or two when I was older.) My dad was a die hard Yankees fan,as was my other brother so we had some spirited conversations in my house.

Actually, "back in the day", the Lindens used to listen to us. Lindens were very accessible, not just the minions, but Philip himself. We would raise a stink about things that didn't work or weren't right, and they listened. Eventually, SL got too big, and the Linden to Resident ratio got too lopsided. Back in 2003, I used to talk to various Lindens at least a couple of times a week. So far this year, I've spoken to maybe two, and one ex-Linden.

Getting back on topic, the very nature of PC configurations (nearly infinite) pretty much ensures that SL will never be 100% stable for all of us. Now, its just a matter of time until each and every one of us decides for himself/herself when we have had enough of the bugs. For me, I find that regular upgrades keeps SL usable. Not an option for everyone, but it works for me.

I wrote a long post, probably overly verbose, on whyI think LL is going backwards or at least not headed in the right direction. Now I am going to propose solutions. I am probably all wet, misinformed or a"twit" or an "ignoramus" as a poster in another thread so graciously called me. Nontheless, here is my go at it:

1. Turn off the spigot. Start phasing out free accounts. Go ahead and keep the ones they have. They're here, we all might as well learn to live with them. However, eliminate new free accounts forever. Allow free accounts on a trial basis for 30 -90 days. At the end of that time they get the account eliminated or they start paying. At the same time, increase the fees for paid accounts $1 USD per month. [I know, I know, HOWLS of protest but stay with me here]

2. Make paid accounts worth it.
A. Bring back first land but modify it. Paid accounts who have never owned land get a 512m for 512L. This land can not be sold back by the original purchaser to anyone but LL.

B. If a sim is full, the free accounts start getting ejected.

C. Live help [which will be brought back] is only available to paid accounts

3. Bring back live help and some DECENT Customer Service. Use some of the revenue from more paid accounts to pay for this. They can even outsource some of this if they want. Use the outsource to answer questions like "where do I get hair?" "how to I unpack a box?" type questions and use in house LL resources for more technical problems.

4. Get tough on griefers. If necessary re-write the TOS and Community Standards. A couple of months of near wholesale griefer BANNING will go along way to eliminate this problem. Other sites manage to identify wrongdoers by e mail accounts, IP numbers and a variety of means. There is no reason why LL can't do the same.

5. Get tough on scam artists. See # 4 above.

6. Start listening. First, consult with various SL users who are not affiliated with LL [e.g. Anshe Chung and the guy who created Caledon] Go to the people they like to point out in their book and in their PR releases as success stories. These are smart people who can probably help LL with some of the problems. Start READING this Forum. Then gotostep 7.

7. Prioritize the bugs. Make a top ten list of bugs to be fixed. REWARD those who manage to impliment a working fix for each bug. Do NOT introduce anew "feature" until one of the top ten bugs is fixed. One "feature" for each fixed bug.

8. Communicate. List the top ten bugs every month. Do NOT repeat do NOT respond to every request for help or complaint with awe're working onthe problem and we apologize for any inconvenience type fecal PR response. That just tends to IRRITATE people more. Just say honestly and briefly what steps are being taken to fix the top ten.

9. Abandon their blind obsession with this voice thing. It isn't a highly requested function and it really can wait until everything else is smoothed out.

10. Kneel down for the Corporate Overlords if you must, but don't bend over. The rank and file resident has shown some incredible loyalty to you. SL has come this far due in large part to them. Don't do them what IBM and Toyota will likely do to you when things go dodgy.

I never ever ever ever want my voice on SL.
It is too compromising.
So let's return to basic quality virtual reality.
Which we are paying for.

I could, I would be happy to. I think I have enough space to host aparty and, if not, there is a NICE little night club right up the hill from me.

The best times for me would be inthe evening after around 7:00 pm SL time. Would most of those interested in coming be able to attand at those times? By the way, you don't have to agree with me on things to be invited. I would just make it open...anyone who reads it is welcome. No nudity or idiotic antics of course!!

As far as voice, I am totally ambivilant about it. I do think its sheer lunacy to go after creating anothe r"feature" when there are too many bugs to be worked out. Its comming though and there is really nothing we can do about it.

As far as the corporate overlords point, LL has to realize that THEY are NOT going to tolerate a unstable, buggy system filled with juvenile griefers and small time scam artists. The corporate overlords MAY be the vehicle that gets things to where they will work. They willprobably create new aggravating problems as well, though. One can only imagine the CEO of IBM Tp-ing with his hair and shoes stuck up his fanny or the CEO of Toyota getting his office furniture ripped off by the wonderful folks at ESC. [howl]

No, that's crap.

In version 1.7, we had, what, maybe 8,000 concurrent users?

Compared to, what, 38,000 now typically?

That version worked great then for that size of world. This version works was built to handle 40,000. Completely different scenarios.

Before 1.7, which is what I said, 4000 was considered a 'pile on test' goal.

That last 1.6.x WORKED.

Since 1.7 SL has steadily gone downhill under the weight of 'oooh! Shiny' and unrestricted usage.

The result is that the current version 'built to handle 40,000' according to you - DOESN'T work.
Somewhere between 30 and 35,000 it becomes unusable.

My comparison wasn't based on concurrent login's anyway - it was based on the system working and not working.

Either way, current versions fail on both counts. And have been doing so for months.

Lol when 1.7 came out we all wanted a roll back - it was bad. Textures took FOREVER to rezz.

We actually wanted a roll back to 1.5 - 1.6 wasnt very good either LOL.

I dont think there were even 8000

We called it 1.7 heaven and hell.

Oooooh! Colette! Remember the early 1.5? I'm sure you'd rather not...
Early 1.6 was a heap of crap too, but by about 1.6.4 it was pretty danm good. My fondest memories were from then to the awful day 1.7 was released...
And really, I don't think things ever recovered from that point on. For me anyway, 1.7 was the begening of the end. Ever since it's been downhill.

When version 1.20.0.1 comes out, the same people will be talking about how great version 1.15.0.2 was and how we should roll back. It's ridiculous.

Sure, it might seem like that to you.

But 1.7? That was something else. You had to be there. LL simply turned SL into a very expensive chat room (you had to pay to be in SL back then). You'd be next to someone (IF you could get to their location), chatting, and see... nothing - for hours.
Effectively the world wasn't there. Movement was impossible. Nothing rezed. Nothing worked, except chat and IM. After the first two weeks (lots of updates, no real improvement) I was very close to giving SL up.

So take it from me, there have been awesomely bad releases in the past. And there have been reasonable ones. But the inescapable trend has been towards a reduction in performance and reliability.

Here's where they're going, some possible destinations:

1. Their plan may work. Keep it together until the big money comes in, either through sale or investment. Then who knows?

You mean US$24 million invested (last number Philip admitted to to my knowledge) isn't big money?

I entered SL 7 months ago and I think it has improved since then. Reliability is still an issue but for me it's no worse or better than when I came in.

The only possible downside has been the scrapping of the ratings system (for those to whom it meant a lot) but for me I just though 'oh well' and forgot about it!

Now that we are getting promises of sculptable prims, we should see an advance in the 3D modelling of our world.

1.5 was when video came out , right? - I used to hang out in laggy places then, so the additional video lag was about all I noticed lol.

I spent the entire day after 1.6 came out naked - Becuase it was the update where all the sims had "pending downloads" in the thousands and the entire world was grey becuase their were no textures, you were either grey or naked too.

After THAT stuff happened 1.6 wasnt so bad.

1.7 was the begining of this Blurry and never rez texture stuff began. 10-15 times changing your clothes to get them clear, then have people tell you they are still blurry. Half your freinds perpetually blurred.

This has improved but you still see it at times..

My biggest concern on these new versiosn is people who cant read their text - SL becomes no fun without being able to read it.

Also some people have noticed a big performance drop and some who could play before cant now becuase their hardware isnt supported. These are issues I dont remember happening before. Usually it wasnt the veiwer we were worried about. It was the overall version.

Luckily my veiwer seems to work pretty much the same as always - not really that great but survivable.
