Lumiere Noir is a legend in my eyes, moreso for Spy vs. Spy tho--whatever happened to those? I remember when he demo'ed them for me. Watching the sub delink... that was one of my early "WOWZA!" moments.

I'm happy this isn't an "end end" and that there's a new beginning!

P.S. Good lord the new one's gonna have flexiprims? I'm gonna be ALL OVER DAT.

I love the new building. Last time I was there it was empty inside so wonderful to hear that it's coming into active service.

Lumiere, words cannot describe how wonderful and useful the ivory tower has been and continues to be for SL-generation after SL-generation of builders.

I tip my taloned wings to you, Lumiere, as the ITLP was one of the really great first places of learning this relative newbie went in his first days in SL. Hopefully, someday, I would hope to be able to leave something of value even a tenth as useful and prestigious as what you gave us. :)

If I can be there, I will try. Any souvenirs for the attendees? ;)

I'll also have to go and see the new place. :)

Congratulations on nearing completion of the new tower location in Natoma. Here are some old photos of the Ivory Tower Library of Prims in Noyo with the original upper sections (circa October 2004). It was indeed an ivory treasure nestled at the edge of an evergreen expanse.

Ack!

*sniff*

Lumiere, i'm (almost) speechless..

oddly, the thread title made me think of exactly what you're doing.. and even still it was a bit upsetting.

i, as well as many others obviously, have sent many new SLers to that ol' Ivory Tower.. sometimes escorting them there and showing them around a bit before leaving them to have fun on their own.

it really is a beautiful build and i must agree that i hope you take a copy of it into your inventory before *gulp* demolishing this classic "wonder of SL".

i'm going to try to make it on saturday for this bitter-sweet event.. in the meantime, i'm off to take some pics and to see what the new tower is looking like these days.

thank you again for all you have provided to SL, it's truly been helpful to our (in-)world as a whole for a long time.. and with the new tower, will continue to do so for (hopefully) a long time to come.

The Ivory Tower was invaluable to me when I decided I wanted to learn how to build in SL. The time you put into it, and are still putting into it, has not gone unnoticed.

Thank you ever so much.

I will be scooting over to the new location and putting it under my picks.

My heart skipped a bit as well when I saw the title of this thread. I have learned many valuable lessons at the Ivory Tower. Thank you for continuing this valuable service to the SL community. : :D

It's not often that one gets a chance to say thank you for something exceptional that someone has done in SL. I can't count the hours that I have spent in your Ivory Tower of PRIMS Lumi and not just as a newbie.

I'd build, hit a road block, visit the tower, learn more, build more, hit more road blocks, visit again, learn more, etc.

My heart skipped a beat when I initially saw the title. Congratulations on nearing completion of the new tower location in Natoma, I will most definately be visiting and thank you for all the help you have given me since I joined SL.

Rose

Lumiere, your work has probably done as much for the vitality and creativity of this world as anyone else. Your teaching has planted thousands of seeds that have sprouted into homes, temples, towers, museums, clubs and stores everywhere.

Like others, I was shocked to read the title of this thread, and my heart sank through my stomach until I realized you're only moving it. Whew. Now I need to replace that landmark that I've been handing out to newbies who tell me they want to learn how to build. :)

Please know that your efforts are very appreciated, and I wish there was a way for you to be rewarded in equal measure to the good you've done.

I agree that this has been one of the "Wonders of SL". I need to take some screenshots before it's gone.

Count me among those who frequented the Ivory Tower as a wee newbie, hehe. I'm sad to see such an established landmark go, but elated that its spirit will live on and thrive in the new location.

And it's certainly been in the works long enough -- I remember visiting the under-construction Tower at least a year ago, maybe more! Glad to see all that work was not in vain, and that the long delays did not stifle your will to complete what you had started. :)

I may or may not make it to the ceremony, but in any case I hope a good time is had by all. I still gotta see the new Tower in its finished state... Good luck with your continuing efforts, Lum! You really are an invaluable figure in the SL community.

Wow! Wow! WOW!

Whew! Whew! WHEW!

Yay! Yay! YAY!

Lumiere, the title of the thread....I had to do a Double Take :)

I learned how to build at your site, and I kept going back for refresher courses.

I haven't looked at the New and Improved Ivory Tower of Wonder yet, but am looking forward to the ever recurring/necessary/enjoyable refreshers plus the new additions you have/will be adding.

You ROCK!

( clap clap clap clap.... awright, you get the picture already... )

Lumi, thanks for creating - and keeping - one of SL's best builds.

Truly something unique and invaluable; one might say it's, um, iconic.

( And the worst your detractors can say is well, it's a bit... primitive... :D )

TYVM!

Anyone who can should, I have a sad ass story to tell.......

I pulled Lumiere's profile up so I could donate my $3KL and noticed HE was online so I 'knocked' and spoke w/ him for a bit....unless I misunderstood him, he said I was the 4th donator in 2 years.

That's just messed up.....It's not anyone's fault...it is what it is, but I think we can help fix this yes?

Reading the title shocked me at first. The Ivory Tower has helped so many over the years. I'm glad to hear Natoma is staying.

I will certainly match you, Nyx.

My Goodness Goshness!

My gosh! Thank you for your kind donations, I have a list of sponsors now!

I've never asked for money because I never wanted people to feel they were under any obligation to use the tower. So many of the people that use it are newbies and can't afford much or anything anyhow so I've never put out any donation kiosks or anything.

Over the course of two years, two kind souls donated and I've always considered them founders...I'm not sure how they would feel if I mentioned their names here although I'd like to.

Now from yesterday the ITLP has seven founders and I'm...flabbergasted with gratitude!
I never expected anything like this!

Thank you,
Lumiere Noir

ITLP in Noyo Destruction and ITLP in Natoma Grand Opening
06-17-2006 22:15
I wanted to thank all those that took part in the demolition of the old and the opening of the new Ivory Tower.

I wasn't able to set the old one physical...I completly forgot that primitive parameters like set physical is hard to do on a whole swarm of prims now...so I had to take to deleting the whole thing in sections which was a disappointment.

Fortunately someone had a building already set physical in their inventory and they were encouraged to draw it out four or five times to the great diversion of all who attended.

Attendance was very high, we filled the sim...and there was a large crowd gathered in adjoining Davenport to watch.

After many heartrending scenes of distruction, the demolition party borded various means of conveyance for a chaotic quasi-parade to Natoma where we opened the new tower for the use of SLumanity the world over.

We chattered and admired each others avartars for some time. Old friends were reunited...and for all I know new alliances were forged, but no one was willing to go into the building...for it is a scary place!

In time certain members of our group that were of a hardy nature ventured forth into the building...and I don't belive I ever saw any of them alive again that evening, but no matter! The old building is now gone, the new has been christened and I believe all had a good time. I think we had 44 in Natoma at the peak of the proceedings.

Special thanks to DoteDote Edison who made a 1/100th scale replica of the original tower (even including some of the exhibits inside!) Copies of this were given to all who wanted one at the event. I'll be putting up a list of sponsors in a prominant locaiton in the tower...once I find a good one, the building is so circular!

I commend the new tower to all of SL...may it profit you all well in all your projects, those who use it...and all those who even hear about it!

if it hadnt been for ivory tower.. I can honestly say I would have probably quit SL altogethor.
I was so frustrated with the building tools I encountered in SL. I yearned for my 3dsmax and the ability to import(and i still do) but ivory towers helped me figure out the key elements of understanding that I was missing. You have in essence... Saved My SLife. I am forever in your debt.

My experience at the Old Tower
06-18-2006 00:28
Well, I attended the demolition, and was pleasantly surprised to see a couple friends there (most notably Beatfox).

Heck, even Torley Linden, friendly person she is, stopped by to watch it go.

My biggest fear was that watching it come down would cause the sim to crash and burn, but as the plans had to be changed...

Anyway, I'd rezzed a Lapras I'd caught at one of the fishing camps and fitted with an Innertube seat, and staked out my place.

Well, Torley thought that was just the neatest thing she'd seen, and now I'm on the hunt for one for HER...

Anyway, I planned to Surf to the new location, and ended up taking several people along the scenic route...

20 minutes or so later, our group arrived, and I DID get a replica of the old tower before I headed inside.

Checked out some of the newer info, and went up top... my jaw DROPPED. The entire ceiling is a dome comprised of countless torii all inerlocked and such... absolutely BEAUTIFUL in its simplicity, yet its complexity. Talking with our friendly Black Spy, I learned he 'knocked it together' in half an hour...

But, one question remains... if a Linden compliments one's creativity, even if he's a relative newb, does that help make him FIC?*

I'm honored I was able to witness this historically--even if some didn't go as planned, it was fab to see everyone in attendance. I grew up in my Second Life and the Ivory Tower in Noyo was something like a legend, like to builders what the Carnegie Hall is to performing artists.

I have always been a fan of not only Lumiere Noir's passion for construction, but because he treated me so nice the first time he demo'ed his Spy vs. Spy gear! I was such in awe watching the black sub delink. I still wonder when those avatars will roam the grid en masse, tho. ;)

All meant positively.

To Tiberious: a treat to see you there, and thanx for the gracious words. I was struck by something I call "rippleshock", which is, to say, my sense of intuition I felt like a fire coming near when I spotted your Lapras rezzing--and how you converted it into a vehicle. Brilliant, brilliant idea implemented! It made me smile a lot as you paddled your hands through the water. Just like it's difficult to analytically explain humor, I found myself in the same reaction. Simply: a good, warm feeling.

And... since a lovely certain someone gifted me with a Flickr Pro account, I put up a set of the Ivory Tower Library of Primitives. Which, I know in time, I'll be looking back on. Maybe others will too.

I've left permissions open to add not only comments, but tags and notes too--feel free to, anyone who wants to contribute.

SLumanity = word I must use more.

Many, many thanks to Lumiere Noir for creating and maintaining the Ivory Tower! I learned more there in a single day than in any other place in Second Life, and it definitely pushed me over the edge into becoming a Builder myself, and not just a texture artist!

*HUG*

Keep up the great work at the new site!
