Hi,

I'm holding an event this Saturday to celebrate the demolition (mass select, set physical, unlink, slight jiggle) of the original Ivory Tower Library of Primitives building tutorial in Noyo.

http://secondlife.com/events/event.php?id=231856&date=1150527600

This is done out of practical necessity, I long ago ran out of room to expand in Noyo and have been working hard to create you a replacement tower in Natoma (208, 166...you can't miss it) over a pretty long period of time.

The new tower is far enough along that I no longer need the old tower, so I'm taking it down. It was always cramped anyway...It's been a good two years in the old tower..but *sniff* I've built a better one now and *sniff* the old one is just tying up *sniff* my tier and all...and *sniff!*

Wow this unaccountably makes me sad to be writing this.

Well...I thought I'd let you know here...thanks to all of you what have sent newbies to the old tower in Noyo to learn how to build for the last two years. Please send them to Natoma 208, 166 starting Saturday June 17, 2006. Please visit the new tower anytime you like, I have a million things to do in it between now and Saturday but I'd love for you to come by and see it. All the under construction barracades are phantom, they're just there to remind you that the place isn't finished, and that you don't need to tell me that station X has no notecard in the notecard giver yet :-)

The new tower has all I had ever planned to put into the original tower but never had the room for...plus it has two hidden levels (one of which will be a vehicle scripting and building tutorial, in Ivory Tower style...the other hidden level will probably be devoted to script building and weapons making tutorials (both are actually closely related with objects rezzing objects and so forth). Look for the weapon and vehicle tutorials over the coming months. There is also an associated website with forums and wiki. It's in place but I'm not ready to open that up to the public just yet :-). This is in preparation for the day that we can easily view HTML from within Second Life, after which time I shall do away with notecards forever!

Your humble and obediant servant ever,

Lumiere Noir

Awesome job brother!

I will do my best to be there, I love watching a sim grind to a halt from a massive physical load.

Whew - when I saw the thread title my heart skipped a beat :D

Thanks for keeping the tower alive all this time, Lumiere - and for continuing to do so.

You've opened up the world of building to so many people. :)

I certainly did my internship there.

Relieved to know you are just going over to the new building. When I saw the thread title, I thought it was the end!

Any chance the old 'um can be rez-foo'd? I think your work has been invaluable to the growth of SL and my hat is off to you! I'm glad there will be an Ivory Tower of Primitives still (and that's an awesome build, too). Thank you, Lumiere!

Yeah, at least tuck it away somehow before blowing up the in-world one :)

I wonder if I'll have a good view from my tower in Davenport. Sounds like a fun way to usher in the new tower, which is frickin beautiful, by the way.

You rock, Lumiere.

awwwzzz... I'll be sad to see this go. I'm going to take lots of pictures. My little group of buddies and I have used the heck out of The Ivory Tower in Noyo. It's one of the first places I visited when i started Second Life 2 years ago with Toast Bard. And as a Live helper, I've handed out the landmark to hundreds or new residents.

Will try to be around for this event! Looking forward to seeing the new one up and running in Natoma.

THANK YOU LUMIÈRE!

Thank you SO much, Lumiere , for having made that! And i too love the looks of your new one! so, many well deserved hugs for my first SL hero! yay!

Ah Shucks!

*sheepishly kicking at dried cow patty under computer desk*

Ah shucks, ya'll, thanks for your kind words about the tower.

It's a strange thing to me, I made it so long ago...never really finished it, and yet today through word of mouth, the tower is much more used now than at any time in its past. This is based on the silly-putty-hard scientific evidence that when I happen to be crossing Noyo I'll theck the traffic indicator on the land) and I've seen a steady and remarkable increase over the past year. This is in large part what has inspired me to rebuild, update and (eventually) complete the project in better surroundings.

Thank you again for the kind words.

Lumi

Me too. :D I have sent more people to the Ivory Tower than anywhere on the Grid. It's the perfect way to learn to build in SL - at least it was for me. Glad to hear that you are expanding and improving!

Whew!! Glad to know its just relocating! I love that tower
not only for its purpose in teaching but for the beauty it is itself. Sorry to hear
its going down but glad to know the great education it brought will continue.
I hope the new tower helps the new and old of SL for a very long time!!

Congrats on the new tower. I didn't learn to build there myself, but I have seen many a newbie there:)

I built my first structure before learning about the Ivory tower and it looked like a badly drawn childrens picture of house and took about 2 hours and was basically a crappy little uneven, off kilter, flat walled cabin with terrible textures.

Then I learned about gridding and proceeded to build my second home, which took about 8 hours and looked much better but I was manually copying/pasting/positioning every object and didn't know how to do proper path cuts/etc.

Then I visited the Ivory tower and learned how to do the same job in <2 hours.. :^).

I'm looking forward to visiting the new place. The tower is absolutely one of the most useful places I have found in SL and every one of my new friends gets referred there right after joining.

Wow. End of an era. But with a brighter future to come!

My success, too, was founded in those hallowed halls of prim-spun precision.

Lumiere,

I've long been a fan of the Ivory Tower of Primitives and I have sent dozens upon dozens of residents - both new and old - to the tower to visit and learn.

This is, IMHO, the single most beneficial build in SL for residents of all ages and I'm glad to hear it is staying around and moving to its new location in Natoma.

Congrats on the expansion and I'll be keeping my eye out for new additions!

I'll admit, the thread title shcoked me when I first read it. But it's awesome to hear that the Ivory Tower will remain as a part of SL. It was one of the first landmarks I received in-world, and has helped my building skills out quite a lot. I've sent a handful of folks there myself.

I'd like to be there for the demolition of the old tower, but RL plans preclude it. I will be sure to pick up the landmark for the new tower as soon as I can get back in-world.

Don't forget to take LOTS of pictures (both before and during the demolition) and post it up on the SL History Wiki!!!
