Hey.. I have been here less then a month and already have over 2000 items. (too many generous people trying to give me a hand) I have been trying since day four to control my inventory. Every day I spend ten minutes or so sorting. I am not adding anything new unless it looks like something that is just perfect for me.
I haven't even begun to mess with my hair yet though... or even looked for shoes I really want and not what was given to me. *grin*
I will try to be a good citizen and keep my hoarding down though.

This was a great and humor-filled article, Willow! Thanks for letting me laugh with you -- and at myself. When I logged on Sunday, none of my friends were on, so, between running back and forth to the laundry room, I bit the bullet and did a bit of organizing of the evil inventory. Mostly I did some rearranging of clutter, but managed to let go of a few items and cleared out my lost and found folder. When I emptied my trash I was shocked that a whopping 1k of items have been deleted, leaving me with about 9.5k.
I need to get serious with my photo album (the endless pics I take) and textures (the endless pics I'm handed!) It's scary how many of those are unlabeled and, of course, I feel the need to look at each one. I have to get it in my head that not all of them are precious memories -- I bet half are of avis I don't even recognize! But darn, there is a lot of sentimental value in there. Same with clothes: I have a silly folder called "Denim Fun" -- its just an odd little outfit I made for myself in world with the Library textures -- I'll never wear it again, but it felt like such a big deal at the time. Noob vivi can sew!
I'm much better these days about getting rid of stuff as I go -- mostly my mess is due hoarding and hunting and gathering in the early days. My goal is to make my inventory leaner and more usable, dump non-transfer things I will never use (oi, have I made some hair mistakes!), and make some sensible folders of giveaways for noobs of things I'm ready to let go of.

From: Moopf Murray 47,000 objects in her inventory, including a ton boxed up! Now, nothing against Willow herself but goddam, that's absolutely ridiculous. I thought I was bad with just over 4000 after nearly 2 1/2 years.
Seriously 47,000 isn't good, not for organising and not for SL as a whole. If people keep that much stuff in their inventories then there really needs to be a charge for excess inventory size. Willow's inventory is basically worth 11 or 12 Moopf Murray inventories in terms of size - I'd say that was excessive for the asset server to have to deal with. Oh yeah, and none of mine is boxed up in the way that Willow does it, so I hate to think how many individual items Willow's actual inventory is.
I wonder how many others have tens of thousands of objects in their inventories? Fluctuates between 15-17k, here. However, as I, you know, MAKE STUFF, it's not ALL just junk lying around.

This is a superb article and great practical knowledge. Of course I left a comment. Inventory management is a paramount SL skill!
I think now is the time to share I had a dream about Willow doing an instructional book.

Wow, I would think this thread would stay in General. After all, it does discuss a big thing in SL ... our inventories. But I guess the title is too specific.
I had an inventory of over 12k but managed to knock it down to 8k. Not bad considering I'm holding my store's inventory. I plan on boxing a lot of items that are in individual folders and that would reduce it by a couple hundred or so.
