Edge Land No More?

The last few days my GF and I have noticed the rapid expansion of the main continent and I'm pretty excited by it all. With how fast Linden has been adding sims to the southern continent I'm amazed at how many sims appear to be in the pool to open up soon on the main continent. As of today it looks like there maybe a substantial increase in water facing/front land that hopefully will not be divided like the southern contitent where many of the water facing sims have 0 protected land on them (I'm all about the concept of communal property for the common use/good and it also drives land value). The addition of all of the additional land does concern me when it comes to land values though, especially with the rapid eastward expansion of the main continent.

From only a week or so into my SL experience (a couple of months now) I fully realized that "edge" property would probably not remain that for long. I've never owned edge property specifically because of the uncertainty it provides, even though I have considered buying land close to the edge but on protected roads in the past so I had at least some assurance.

When I shop for land these days (one of my main hobbies whether or not I'm in the market) I look for very specific things - at least one border on protected land, mature, preferably on already constructed road or waterway and not anything that looks reclaimed or like it might be in the future auction pool. The last three weeks I've changed my philosophy again and now I first shop protected road and water at the same time and usually browse the map rather than using the find function since it seems to obscure what would be appealing land amoungst all the cruft. At one point I dug the "urban" areas but now I like to have some sort of view from my property that won't have a skyscraper created across the road and is unlikely to have a casino/shopping mall/club constructed nearby, which is never a certainty as I have learned but if you check out the length of time your neighbors have been around you can get a good idea. Of course I'm also willing to spend the time shopping to get a good deal rather than buy on impulse :^).

No view on the mainland is protected, with the *possible* exception of land adjacent to Govenor Linden Protected Land. You buy the land not the view. If you paid more for the view, you got suckered.

Its happened to a lot of us. Its sort of par for the course, but its an interesting thing the way the SL landscape changes.

I did not see any one post this but here it is. there was an an announcement recently about mainland shoreline reconciliation.

From: someone
As some of you have noticed, there is some reconciling happening on the
flat edges of the original mainland continent. Areas where the land ends in a flat side
rather than a natural shoreline are being drawn into the design of the
larger continent, by means of additional regions in most cases. Some of these
will be available for sale, others will remain accessible openspaces, depending
on the amount of land vs water in the region.

This project has been a long time coming, and in an effort to maintain and enhance the beauty and integrity of the oldest mainland continent, we feel this is the
right way to proceed. There is currently no timeframe for having them all
up and running, but we expect to be putting them up in batches starting
next week.

I've always thought the old continent was ugly, all blocky and artificial looking. The new shoreline does make it look a lot more attractive, although it still looks very odd with all the perfectly square lakes in it. Probably too late to correct that...
