"Just remember this, Mr. Potter! That this rabble you're talking about, they do most of the working and paying and living and dying in this community. Well, is it too much to have them work and pay and live and die in a couple of decent rooms and a bath?"

Perfect example why an issue as important as an economy's currency should not be left to the whims of one currency exchange, much less two individuals.

Heh heh. Yup.

Now, obviously, it makes clear sense why Philip is doing this.

What happened if you guys got hit by a bus before?

Welp, Philip of course knows what he is doing. This run on the bank was taken into account I'm sure. I'm also confident Philip knew GOM wouldn't keep up a stiff upper lip and keep on operating until the system that is to replace it is up and running. I'm also sure he took into account the player backlash over this and all as well and tut tutted it. Nothing to panic about, really. It is, after all play money.

Now, the fact Cubey Terra announced his retirement from the game is, indeed a reason to panic! The disullusioned oldbies shuffle off as the fresh free accounts wander about looking at the empty buildings, their bling and hoochie hair grinding the fastest servers to a 2fps crawl and wonder where everyone is.

Congratulations, Ricky et al. After negotiations broke down with LL, it became obvious that the magnitude of your contribution was not adequately understood by LL. That they would honestly expect you to mutely trudge on, shouldering the immense burden of maintaing the exchange while they busily proceed in their plans to supplant you is utterly ridiculous.

You guys did the right thing. Good luck in your future endeavours.

Thanks so much for chiming in! Really appreciate it!

Actually, as much as it may sting, they're right.

I second Ardith's words wholeheartedly. I wouldn't have turned the other cheek either.

Thank you guys. Yours was a great service, so sad things didn't work out but it is a fact of life that nice guys finish last. You will be missed by your customers.

Ricky, before I read through this whole thread, I just want to take a minute to wish you and Jamie the best of luck with whatever future projects you do. You helped with a great service to the SL community, and to me, no matter what side of the fence anyone is on, that is an accomplishment that cannot be taken from you. Thank you for your hard work and best wishes! :)

Having just received the mail myself, and having gotten no other notice from GOM, I am equally surprised and disappointed. We will do everything we can to get a solution in place as quickly as possible, and provide a mechanism for residents to keep doing currency exchange. Hang in there.
I don't see why LL needs to rush on anything. There are other currency exchanges.

Better to take longer and do it right, than rush to get something out there, and subsequently have it catch fire.

The currance exchange is about to change from the hands of thousands to the hands of 2. That is why LL needs to hurry and get the exchange running.

Wish you guys the best of luck. GOM was a great service and I hope you next efforts meet with success.

Hopefully people who use GOM to pay for tier saved some money for a rainy day which can tide them over while LL releases their currency market. All small businesses need to have a month or two backup reserves for bumps in the road. However, I think Eboni said that IGE was still buying. Either way, I hope that most will hang in there until this all smooths over.

The economy cannot kill SL. I've been here awhile, I've never sold L$'s, never bought L$'s, the 'content' I add is freely given. I've found that most of the content I enjoy is free or nearly free, just labors of love. I feel bad for those who invested into the economy, but the sky isn't falling. Maybe there'll be a recession, some sims will close down, oh well... Sad but Secondlife goes on.

Yes it can. Content creators who are paid in L$ will find it less worth their while to stick around.

Folks have been mentioning account credits versus direct payments here - let me be clear that our intention with an LL exchange is to do BOTH - we will definitely offer both the option of paying you directly AND leaving amounts sold as a credit to your account.

Additionally, I just wanted to add that I saw a resident asking GOM if they would be interested in selling the GOM system to another group of residents, and wanted to add that LL would be very supportive of such a move and happy to help out in any way that we could with making that a success.

What's up, Merwan? Wasn't that clear enough for you? I took it to clear up the confusion as to what the LL based currency trading system would include, and also dispel any truths in the accusations and rumors that LL just don't want and wouldn't accomodate resident based solutions. I guess that means it comes down to the fact that the specific offer that was on the table from GOM wasn't right for SL, then, huh?

I thought that little post from Philip actually said rather a lot.

Wow, that was petty. Reinforces my speculation that the closing of GOM was done out of spite; not a rational business decision.
