I purchased, with considerable sacrifice, two water front parcels that were at least 60% into the "ocean."
I first purchased one 2048 parcel but after purchase I noticed that it was too narrow for a typical 30x30 house that would normally fit on a 1024 parcel. It was very narrow and long into the water. Also, building out a deck would have run into a neighbors parcel as well because it was crooked. So I purchased the adjoining parcel at considerable cost, only justified by the beautiful view of the water. Putting up my deck today about a week and a half after the land acquisition, all of a sudden there was now another parcel totally submerged in the water up for sale by same seller (I am advised not to name names-why I don't know becase it is fact) of 2816 sq m for the whopping sum of 23,936L. I purchased the parcel because my view would have been ruined. Seller said in About Land that submerged parcel would be great for scuba diving or a Dungeon!
My inital sale was deceptive because the land out into the water was not for sale. Misleading in my opinion and not very nice. After all this investment , I had to spend more money and up my tier. Shame on you! You know who you are! Thankfully, beyond my land is protected Linden land.

I don't see any issue with how this was transacted.

I'm sorry U feel cheated...but U should have maybe turned on 'land owners' and 'property lines' to get an idea of where the land in question really was. And any and all boardering land as well. And in all truth....again please don't take this wrong, Nobody can make U buy anything.

I disagree. If in real world, if i bought ocean front property, it would be illegal to sell land in the middle of the water.

You bought land without knowing, or even thinking to check, what land you were buying and where its boundaries were? OK.

This "problem" was only caused by your lack of research. Where did you think the land went? Why would you buy the land with out first seeing where it went?

Pugcharlie, walk away from this thread. You're getting dogpiled for trying to blame someone else for your mistakes.

If I were to buy land, I'd never buy any which bordered on other for-sale land. You never know what you could end up waking up to next week!

SL is designed to be a cheater's paradise. It's "just business", right? If you don't like it, don't play. There are hordes of people out there to separate you from your money. Get used to it. SL used to be a much better place to be and play when it was smaller and people were honest.

I don't blame you, Pugcharlie, for being upset. Nobody would expect their water parcels to all of a sudden have the view blocked by somebody buying a parcel of OCEAN. This doesn't generally happen in the real world, and it is absurd to expect new players to know it will happen here. Much less deliver all sorts of admonishments about how that person didn't "do his homework." (Not to say that it's the seller's fault, either.) Frankly, I don't care anymore how many new players get run off from this game by people on the forums. They'll doubtless be better off without it. coco

In rebuttal, the end of the parcels did not show any other "FOR SALE" land, OK? And yes I am fairly new but I didn't expect the game to be so "Buyer Beware." My neighbors who have been there for some time just noticed the new "land" sale at their waterfront parcel after I called it to their attention. And they're not too pleased either.
The "LAND" was not for sale before. Wheh I purchased the parcels the water beyond was NOT for sale. I made no mistakes. If the land were up for sale, I might have perhaps considered buying it.
No one can make anyone buy anything but paying some $23,000L per 2048, I considered that to be the price I had to pay for precious waterfront land. Maybe because I'm new here, I expected more from people including some of the responders here.
I still love SL and will go forward enjoying myself but am now the same cynic I am in RL. At least now, my parcel will go to the end of the "world." Or at least to the end of the sim protected by Gov. Linden. Maybe a gift in disguise because it will be that much more desired.

I understand why you're upset. I'm also sure that you know the difference between SL and RL. I also expect that if you spend what you consider a large amount of $L on anything in SL that you get all the pertinent info prior to doing so.
I will agree that this appears to be an unfortunate circumstance where a new player was disadvantaged by lack of knowledge (which is available to you whether you availed yourself of it or not). I will not agree that the seller did anything to hornswaggle you.

No the seller did not hornswaggle me as you say but this is a lesson learned. In any event, I have spoken with the seller and I guess I learned more about land sales in the last few hours than I have for a month. It is reality..SL reality. OK, back to fun......

If only we could make sure land boardering ours wouldn't go up for sale maybe I wouldn't have THIS lovely view. And no I'm not bitching about it, I say live and let live, it's thier land, but it's HUGE!!!!

Some friendly observations I've made about different types of land, and how things work in Second Life for those that are still new. Every parcel in Second Life is owned by somebody except for rare peices that the game company Linden Labs has set aside to keep things aesthetically pleasing. When you buy land you should go to view, and click both property lines and land owners. This will give you an idea of where the property lines are. The for sale land will be highligheted orange, the not for sale land will be red, and the Govenor Linden land will be purple. If it is not for sale and empty you are not guaranteed that it will remain empty or unsold. The only land that will not be sold is land that has a Govenor Linden as an owner. This land still might be sold at a later date by Linden Labs in the auction, but until then it will remain empty. You can go to the land section of the second life web page, and look at the aution page. There you will be able to see what is up for auction, and what is not up for auction yet. Land in the water has many uses. You can build your own islands, use boats, don't have to deal with land poking through your build, easier to build somewhat out of sight underwater, and many other things. If the use you want out of it, is to be empty water for your view, I would suggest buying the water you want to remain pristine. You can't expect owners of this land to refrain from building, just to keep your view nice, and you can't expect for them to pay for empty land themselves instead of selling it to someone that does want to build on it. The only way to have empty water, is to own it, or be next to Govenor Linden owned water. So to have a pristine view, not only are you going to pay very high prices, but you will have to buy most of the underwater land if you want a water view. Keep in mind, that waterfront is one of the lowest available, highest demanded peices of land. It will be full to capacity almost all the time, and it will be expensive. Now the best way to get a good view in my opion is to buy and build on a cliff. It is some of the cheapest land in SL. There are some problems I'll mention, but there are some benefits. The biggest benefit is that it gives you a form of seclusion. Your neighbors in front and behind you will be above your house where you can't see, or below your house where you can't see. The land may appear to have less space, but when looked at from directly above, it has the exact same amount of space as any other peice of land. The bad part is that land only moves +-4 meters, you will not be able to flatten this land. You will have to be creative in how you build, and a prefab house will just stick straight out into the air. The good news in SL is that you don't need things to be supported when you build. You can build in mid-air if you like. It may take some hefty building and creativity if you want the build to look realistic, however if it is seclusion you want, this is the best choice for building on the ground, ecsepcially if you are bordered by Govenor Linden land. There is also the option of building high in the air. If that is the case, I suggest just buying the cheapest land you can find. Why worry about the ground, when you won't be there anyway. The key thing to remember, is that someday you will have neighbors, no matter where you buy. Even land not up for auction today owned by Govenor Linden can be auctioned at any time. If you want to live in the middle of virtual no where, you will need to own the land that will make you feel like you are in virtual no where. If you can't afford that, my only other suggestion is to find some landscape scene and put it on your windows or on a wall outside your building. Be aware walls may make your neighbors angry, but you have the right to build what you want, just as they have the right to build what they want.

Great informative advice. Thanks, Dark. Positive feedback is always welcome.
And at the very least, for now, my water borders Gov. Linden protected land/water
