Hello,
Would a $1L pay per IM (instant message) be a good idea?
Such a money sink would eliminate millions of $L
from the economy and regular, general chat would
still be free.

IM Tax
05-30-2006 19:27
It would certainly make a great sink, no doubt about that...tons of money removed...
However, it is an EXTREMELY severe tax. A tax this severe is not required, in my opinion and would recieve little to no support. I would say that there would be a 0.00001 % chance of it ever being accepted....and that is being generous. Something more moderate would be more likely to succeed. and no, I do not have any ideas myself at the moment, so do not give up...New ideas are great. !! |

If you want a realistic, feasible and above all tangible money sink...make it simple....COMMERCIAL INCOME TAX.
Yeah...income tax. Whats that do? It sinks the most from the people that are doing the most damage to the economy with their huge weekly sell offs. The more you make...the higher a percentage you pay into the system. Then...instead of the Lindens creating money to pay basic account stipends, the basic account stipends are funded out of taxes gathered by the Lindens. The remaining balance of it could be applied to finance and add more Sandbox sims to the world so theres plenty of space for new players to sit around and build and get a good handle on the game so they too can become content developers and then turn around and start contributing to the economy by producing goods and services. Or use the remaining balance to fund more intensive in world training classes to teach new players how to become developers. Basically putting a small percentage of the money people are slagging the economy with into positive "public works" programs that benefit EVERYONE involved and the economy too. And I'm a business owner. I make pretty fair money, and I pay $85.00 a month in tier/membership...and I personally would have no problem with paying a commercial income tax as long as the funds got applied to the economy in a fashion which benefited the world at large in general. Seriously...this isn't a bad idea...and my option is that if you're making enough money to dump a million Linden a week on the Lindex you can probably afford to pay taxes to better the world thats enriching you so much personally. |

Darwin Tiger That's stupid. Why should it be like that? That's going to be alot of taxes. Also why should there be any taxes anyways? L$ are made of nothing. The government, SecondLife have the power to set their L$s to 0 to 100000000000000. |

Actually, great idea in here

Why not tax sale events on the Lindex?!?!?!?!
Besides costing real US$, it could cost an additional 2% in L$ on the amount traded. |

Such a money sink would eliminate millions of $L from the economy and regular, general chat would still be free. Better yet, introduce L$10000 fee per every post in the Land and Economy forum. You get much faster money burning rate, _and_ remove at least part of insanity going on here... (i'm kidding. maybe) |

(i'm kidding. maybe) lol, that makes sense! Anyone who wants to cry about the L$ value falling should be charged 1000$L per new thread about it! |

Darwin Tiger L$1 to START a new IM session... I'd possibly go along with. But unless there's some way to communicate with the person standing next to me PRIVATELY without paying per message... it will only be something that makes people angry. |

Beings as the whole purpose of SL is to communicate with people, it would not make much sense to discourage communication.

Seriously... The fun of playing the "game" is way more important than the value of the Linden. Suggestions are a great idea and should be encouraged but you need to seriously think through the effect on gameplay and Linden Labs profitability (which are very closely related). The value of the linden is a small matter compared to those two items.
When the linden goes low enough that the value of the stipends is reduced to a managable level then an equilibrium will be reached. What works in favor of that is that premium stipends are fixed at 500 lindens a week. When I joined, the Linden was at 260 so it was about $2US. Now at 330 it's about $1.50, if it hits 500/1 it's a dollar. Prices adjust and life will be more predictable. In a way the sooner this happens the better it is for the everybody except those holding a lot of lindens. The only thing that threatens this stabilization is if LL decided to raise the stipend. I seriously doubt they will do this because it will cost them money. Once the linden stabilizes there will be a stedy demand for new money and LL will make a profit selling that new currency. I think they realize this and some of their recent moves indicate that they was the value to drop and fast. Just my 6.5L |

Cool - I'll just split all my sales boxes between 5 accounts and do all my transactions through SLBoutique with a web link prim. Gamed in under 2 seconds - and I didn't even work up a sweat. So the highest taxed person in game will be Currency Linden.. _____________________

So the highest taxed person in game will be Currency Linden.. Welcome to the internet. If you build it...someone will exploit a hole in your system by tea time. Nothing is perfect. But irregardless, even splitting your sales boxes between 5 accounts you'd still be paying into the tax fund. The money would still dissapear into hardware sinks for Linden Labs so they can better the support infrastructure of the game. Like I said its not perfect but I think several million a week going INTO the game in some tangible fashion is alot better than several million a week going INTO the Lindex to no gain to the common good at all except to create an atmosphere of economic hysteria. |

Like I said its not perfect but I think several million a week going INTO the game in some tangible fashion is alot better than several million a week going INTO the Lindex to no gain to the common good at all except to create an atmosphere of economic hysteria. Take a lesson from world history. If poor people implement taxes to force the rich to subsidize them, poor people will pay more taxes than the rich. Reason is, rich people have money, know money, and understand money much better than the average poor or middle class person. As such, the taxes that are passed are usually paid in full by poor and middle class, and nearly completely avoided by rich people who know how to work the system. One of my aquaintances (granted I haven't spoken to him in years) was making about $60k a month two years ago (probably $80k+ a month now). Through ownership of "fake" corporations and various other money loopholes he only pays %15 in income taxes, whereas my parents and I, not having an option to set up a $2000us corporation, pay %27. >.< (p.s. I'm still in college though so I'll definitely change that once I'm out). Siggy's post, btw, is a perfect example of this. People who don't know and don't make the money don't know all the options, so you will clammor for taxes of content sales etc. People who actually do know the system also know how to exploit it. In the end, the "rich" people of SL will be able to avoid the taxes, and the hapless every day users who just happen to get lucky and come across some money will get screwed. |
