Hi,

Is there a way to find out just what land a player or group owns and where?

Thanks.

Ask them.

I was gonna say that. But I thought it was too obvious. Evidently this is for a reason you don't want them knowing you want to know. You know? ;)

Yes Kris, in some cases I may not want them to know, you are correct. In other cases, it may just be very hard to catch that person online.

As far as your other comment, I'm not sure what that means?

PS
I was just asking if there is a way anybody can look up that type of info :)

If you don't need to track them down to neg rate their build or whatever, what is the purpose that would necessitate secrecy from the land holder? Stalking comes to mind, though there are other reasons I could come up with.

There are two ways to determine what land a particular AV owns without them being aware:

Option 1:

a) Deploy a grid-wide land scanner, and pump the collected information into a database. Sort.

Option 2:

a) Hire a private investigator to determine where avatar X lives
b) Follow this person as they visit their local Internet Cafe
c) Wait for person to login to the Second Life website
d) Pull fire alarm
e) Browse

Otherwise, No. :D

Security for transactions - commitment to community
12-15-2005 12:58
A good reason one would want to know another's land holdings is if one was considering a business deal or relationship. Just like in "first life," one who has roots in a community and owns land is more likely to have a stake in keeping their promises and performing their agreements than one who is transient and holds no property. For centuries in many realms, only land owners were allowed to participate in government for that reason.

An interest in land is harder to convert into dollars american and transfer to another avatar. Under some SL political structures (such as Neualtenburg), it can't be sold without the consent of the government. This allows the possibility for a creditor party or obligee party to get a lien on that land from the debtor or obligor party in a loan or contract.

Being able to readily find out how much land another person owns, and where, enables one to better assess that other persons credit-worthiness and degree of establishment in the community. In first life, land ownership is readily searched by owner, at least in the US. Just walk into the town clerk's office and look at the public "grantee index" or "grand list" and you'll find every land owner in town listed by name with a reference to the volume and page of the record where the deed to that person is recorded. Same thing with mortgages, prior liens, etc.

A landowners' index would be a valuable addition to SL, especially valuable to those interested in making contracts or secured loans.

Thank you Frank, I could not have said it better myself!

And you were pretty much right on the money as far as my motives. I'm looking to initiate a deal and to know where all this persons land is in relation to mine will help me draw up a better first negotiation strategy.

I sure as hell ain't looking to STALK someone, jeepers.

But I guess the answer is no, it can't be done in any quick and public record type manner.

Thank you all.

Well its sort of the oposit of a listing in RL.. You can chose to opt out of being listed.. You can opt in in SL by puting you residence in your profile under picks..

bargain, don't rule out demanding disclosure

Absent a central public "grantee index," there is no reason you can't ask your possible counterparty to list property owned by sim and coordinates, then go out and eyeball them. Are they working properties producing income, or "for sale" blanks? Are they in established communities or "first land" transient camps?

Also, how long has you counterparty been "alive" in SL? How many positive rates has she received? The longer one has been in, the greater their stake in not disappearing.

This is exactly one of the things we're trying to understand in the Law Society ... how to make enforceable agreements ... perhaps through securing "pledges" (sometimes known as "hostages";) ... and in SL, about the only property that can be nailed down is virtual land.

Some say it is impossible to enforce contracts in SL. I think its possible, but am uncertain yet the best ways or the range of risk outcomes possible. So, please let me know how you resolve this effort.

Good call, Pete! :)

Just looked a little more closely. Note that the info appears to be a tad dated.... It looks to be about 60 or so odd days old. But better than nothing! :)

I did. Do you want your key back?

To prove I have it, it starts with 29a and ends in 23a2. Mwahaha!

If you make me a suitable monetary offer by way of compensation for my loss, inconvenience and a small administration fee to cover the work involved, I may consider returning it to you intact.

So, how old is this Db?
12-15-2005 14:38
How up to date is the db? Is it the result of a one-time scan some time ago, or is it updated regularly? Is it likely to include private islands and "hidden" properties, or just the main grid?

Also, I ran the name of the land baron most love/hated in SL and only found three (3) pages of ten links each. Does this mean that such land baron only owns 30 parcels? That strikes me as low, considering the "Leaderboard" listing of acres owned.

Inquiring title searchers want to learn more about this intriguing service.
