From: Eggy Lippmann Here's how the SL economy works: Consumers buy money on Lindex to spend on products. Producers move products and sell their money on Lindex. So SL is only a marketplace for virtual goods? I thought one of it's attractive factors is that it's a place for socializing. (You know, like clubs, too.) Supposing Linden Labs wants SL to be a place where people socialize, and like to come, they have to finance at least a part of it. Like: if you've got a circus, you have to pay the clowns! It might be an interesting idea to have a real life theater, where people pay tickets, but don't get anything else than an empty theater. Then you say: hey, the stage is there, entertain yourselves!

For those of us who are not computer savy and do not, nor will ever, be able to build things to sell...how do we aquire LL$'s to buy the stuff you all want to sell so that you can exchange your LL$'s for real money? Now as much as I enjoy shopping SL....I would rather spend my US dollars for "real stuff" in RL and only purchase things in SL with LL$'s that I can earn somehow. Not into buying LL$'s unless of course I was a property owner and graphically talented enough to build myself an empire etc... Perhaps dancing pads, and camping chairs gave us less talented people an option to make a few bucks to buy all the stuff you guys make. One hand washes the other in RL and in SL.
Is SL only for "computer graphic scripting geeks"? Or, is there a place for us who are not so inclined to enjoy our SL experience.

I would ask the same question some of us need the dwell however small it is to get some money for use in sl. What's it to you if people want to just park in chairs for hrs? these people are not likely to want do anything or buy anything you offer anyway, they would stand around and do nothing just as they do in Active worlds lots of avs just there not even chatting.

Btw, what is the SL equivalent of "where people pay the tickets" in your example?

From: Kim Manilow So, people that cash out lindens don't contribute anything to SL? Are you sure about that? Because that is what you just said. I stand behind my comments but perhaps need to clarify it a bit. If, as a player, you use your dwell money towards the cost of your land rental, and provide a great service to the 'community', then I have no problem with that whatsoever. But how many people who cash out money are actually doing that? Not many, I'd guess.. most just "take the money and run". Huge clubs, of 90,000+ traffic, that were built then just sit there whilst the owners cash out the money they get paid for doing nothing, is purely parasitical. I don't like the way that the only way to get money in game is to buy it, sell stuff, or get given it for sitting still for hours on end. If LL were to introduce ways to make money - in a similar way to TSO's 'single player money objects', then I'm sure a lot of people would be a lot happier. Unfortunately it's very hard to achieve anything in game without money. I desperately need a bigger plot, but I can't afford the extra land tier or the cost of buying the land, and there is nothing I can do about it. It's kinda sad that creativity is, for many people, restricted by the amount of disposable income you have, rather than skill or talent. Just think how much better the game would be for everyone without this holdup. Lewis

From: Travis Lambert From what I understand, there are no concrete plans to remove the $L bonus from dwell/traffic at this time. However, Robin has dropped some hints (as quoted by Toy above) that its probably not something that is wise to depend on for the long-term. While I believe that in another 6 months dwell/traffic payments will be phased out as well, that timeline is just an educated guess on my part. There are few facts to go on at this point - only subtle cues. Or I could accuse you and Toy of having "somehow parlayed" Robin's whole message into something it couldn't possibly be saying, because you are paranoid and bizarre and hyserical. Except I won't, because I'm rational. And anyway, I read the message the exact same way you did. The writing is clearly on the wall, unless and until we get some other message countering the one quoted above. coco

From: Eggy Lippmann Here's how the SL economy works: Consumers buy money on Lindex to spend on products. Producers move products and sell their money on Lindex. Where does dwell fit in? It doesn't. It merely serves to perpetuate the idea that this is some sort of computer game where you go around killing monsters, or in this case harvesting people as a way to get money for free. Without these silly randomizing factors like the dwell bonus the economy would probably be more stable. Eggy is right. The whole thing - as reflected in these recent (and upcoming) changes - is some people make stuff, and other people buy their Lindens in order to buy their stuff. Nothing else is needed - no entertainment, nothing. It's all about the stuff, and only about the stuff. coco

coco You are right coco! It is all about the stuff...the stuff that somebody makes and sells to people then turns it into a nice US$ profit while the guy who is bored to death keeps buying SL toys to amuse himself. This sounds too much like some people's RL...Ho Hum! ....and they say "camping out" is boring?

From: Margaret Mfume That would be about as profitable as the theater that pays its audience to attend. Btw, what is the SL equivalent of "where people pay the tickets" in your example? Well, like monthly payments? Though you're right, many people are 'basic'. Though those have the potential to become 1.) monthly premium payers 2.) content creators/sellers 3.) Linden $ buyers But still, if you were a noob, and had just came into SL, but all you see is 'no events to go, or the ones that there are, cost some USDs', I think you'd turn back fast and run. It's the reason I didn't even bother to try There.com -- they say it starts with you shelling out USD's for everything. No thanks. I rather came to SL. But the other way around: it's pretty plausible that I could come to SL, enjoy myself, get hooked on, and then spend what my pocket lets me (USD's). Maybe I'd spend 10 USD per month. Maybe only 5. Or 50. Depends on my wallet. But I will still feel comfortable, at any level. I can go to any event, enjoy it, etc.
