From: Cheyenne Marquez An economy in which profits are increasing overall is a bad thing? You'd make a better case if you stated...you don't see prices dropping NOR profits increasing. I'll pass thank you Didnt say it was a bad thing! I just dont want to give up something with no return to help others make more profit! Remember You do not have to buy things in SL unlike RL. Our clothes never wear out, we do not eat, no maintance costs, etc. Oh I pay my rent in American Dollars. What difference does it make to me if there is inflation? It is just that my Stipend is worth less. If given up, it is money out of my pocket for nothing! Oh, I buy Lindens if they are needed to pay for something special. Again, Why should I worry?

From: Cheyenne Marquez Thank you for the "down and dirty" lesson on "Inflation 101."
This is what a lot of the pro-stipend folk do not understand.
In essence, they may be keeping their precious $L50 stipend but as a consequence, ultimately paying an extra $L100 for that item they've been saving to buy.
I'll give it the benefit of the doubt that there are good arguments to be made for both points of view.
The only diference being the perspective from which its veiwed. Except I'm not against the stipend. SL is effectively a Social Credit economy. Not a particularly well-planned one, since this was probably not the intent of the stipend, but as a matter of fact, it works about the same. Inflation is not even necessarialy a bad thing; as with all things, it has positive effects and negative effects. For example, the "money sinks" in SL generally have fixed costs. Inflation allows you to make more uploads, cheaper classified ads, cheaper find listing, and cheaper ratings. On a more useful note, if you borrow X amount of L$ and agree to pay back X+Y, if we're using a smaller L$ by the time the loan comes due you're effectively paying less. Ginko would find L$ inflation advantageous, frex. (And no, I'm not implying some kooky conspiracy theory about them, or anyone else, manipulating the market - take the tinfoil elsewhere.)

From: Cheyenne Marquez You make a really good anti-stipend advocate. Keep up the good work Please write more about why I make a good anti. I dont see any reason to give up something to make another person profit. I earn my money in American dollars in RL. Working in SL is not worth my time or effort! I think you need more of this.

From: Ranma Tardis Please write more about why I make a good anti. Your inability to see it in your own words, though telling, is not surprising...for those who walk in darkness, will never see the light. From: Ranma Tardis I think you need more of this. See this is what I admire about you most... You are so generous with the government cheese you have collected through the years.

To date, I haven't had the opportunity to learn the difference. I am however, quite honored to have been corrected by one, who perhaps could very well be, the foremost expert on the matter. From: Ranma Tardis You are going to cost me a lot of money to supply! Try as you may. You should be forewarned however, that for some, all the money in the world won't help.

Be warned, I hand out cheese for people in need but no Lindens or dollars. Sl is in such need of Cheese!

im pro stipend but...
03-15-2006 15:15
Im not thinking of myself here people there is alot more to SL then alot of the anti-stipend people are thinking. Im not in sl for money and whatnot im here to be creative i can sell my stuff which is great but in turn what people are saying to do ultimately would lead to a boom in linden value sure but then it would drop drastically eventually drying up and causing a total economic downfall. Less L means less development and so much more!! Think about the longer term effects of lowering or getting rid of the stipend! please!

Is there a fundamental flaw in how the Sell L$ Exchange Rate works?
03-15-2006 18:48
I understand that the Exchange Rate in L$ / US$1.00 field is set to reflect "current market price", however having this automatically filled in for everyone seems to me to be counter-productive to achieving higher L$ to $ exchange rates. Novice or inexperienced users most likely will sell at whatever price is listed there automatically I believe.
I'm not sure but it seems that the "Current Market Price" is whatever the last purchase price was. From a purely statistical basis, if enough inexperienced users sell at this listed price and often enough someone sells at a higher rate, the natural result will be for the exchange rate to continue to increase making the L$ worth less.
It would make more sense to me to have a price listed in the Exchange Rate field L$2-3 LESS THAN the current market price in order to have a higher percentage of players try to achieve getting more dollars for their L$. The "Current Market Price" could simply be listed somewhere on that page. Making players have to change the price to the higher figure would help swing the trend from making the L$ less valuable, to making it worth more.

whereas the anti-stipend people need to learn the definition of falling.
If I were to go by their assessments the houseboats on Lake Mead have been sinking for the last 2 years!
