Land barons don't set the prices. Linden Labs sets the bottom price for new land in the auctions, and residents set the limit on how much they will buy for on the grid. In reality, if you look, land barons are selling 512 for less than 5k in most cases. Most land being sold by land barons is being sold at the same price it would go for in the Linden Labs auctions. If you are looking at someone selling for 10k-20k for a 512, chances are they aren't a land baron. Land barons that don't exploit only survive by pricing to sell. If it is at a price no one will pay, then it is not a land baron that will last longer than a month. Land barons skim off the money lost by those that are impatient and want to sell fast. They aren't skimming money off of prices no one pays. If no one pays, then there is no money to begin with.

And to this I must give kudos to Ansche Chung. Her land purchase prices are actually astonishingly reasonable for the amount of land you get. I have seen some 'land barons' take over whole chuncks of sim and selling 512 plots for 10K, where as I have in many instances seen Ansche Chung selling a hefty 2048 plot for just over 9K.

Alts owning non-first land?

Other than "first land," can basic account alts of a premium account own land? These are the extra accounts for which a premium owner pays a one-time $9.95 fee. Assuming they pay any tier that might apply?

Only premium accounts can own land. This applies to alt accounts as well. Basic accounts can't own first land or any other land. (They can rent land from other residents though, which is often cheaper than paying tier to LL)

I'm curious. If a person buys and holds land. They still have to pay at least $9.95 a month correct?
So long as they are active in monthly payments. It is their land.
As Nyx Divine said.
They can do what they want with it.
To suggest otherwise and take their land because you don't agree with how its being used would not be very fair. Even though that is how things go in the real world.
Squatters rights still exist in Missouri even.
An example of what that is, for those who may not know, is something like this.

We have done upkeep on a portion of our neighbors land that exists near the true borderline. For over 16 years we mowed the grass, trimmed tree's, etc.
All the while thinking it was our land the whole time.
The neighbors said nothing about it. (They had no clue either)
The other neighbors can be witness to this fact that we have done upkeep on it for such and such time.
We could, if we were asses, go down to city hall and have it put in our name. Because we have been doing upkeep for over 10 years. Which apparently is the squatters rights time limit.
(Termed after people sitting on land to claim it.)

I think in Alaska the goverment still has free land, from back in the 1700's when everyone claimed free land.
You just have to sit on it for 10 years. Or live off the land there.
It's all mountain top though. lol

It's unfair but it does exist in the real world. Interesting I thought. :p

Addition: I'm talking about the USA. Missouri. Where I live. :)

this is how I see it..

A alt can buy First Land if thay never had First Land on none of there accounts.
1st account or alts.

1. main account gets First Land his alt can not buy First Land but can buy other land as long it is not First Land .

2. main account has land but never had First Land one of his alts can buy First Land. but just one alt.

ppl can and "have" got bannd, Suspended, for making alts just to buy up First Land.
It is called 'Abuse of the First Land program "

I know I seen this stuff on the Police Blotter before. it was like 2 or 3 weeks back I seen it. of ones geting bannd or Suspended for 'Abuse of the First Land program " for buying First Land with alts.

I think it was determined in a thread of some time ago that that was something different, Steve.

I forget the details of it, but maybe someone else remembers.

In any case, it is not against the TOS to buy first land with your alt, and as far as I know no one has gotten banned or suspended from buying first land with their alt.

In fact, one person told me they checked with a Linden first to find out if it was okay for them to buy first land with all five of their alts, and the Linden said sure.

It would be indeed difficult to ban or suspend people for using the materials they have legally purchased from the Lindens, particularly since no rule against it exists anywhere.
