Iif you could make one change to the Land Store... what would it be?

We are reviewing the data from the last 2 months the store has been active, including the data so far from May's Auction sale, to determine what, if any, actions/development we should take on the store.

I would love to hear your ideas on what has worked, what hasn't worked, and so forth.

Thanks

First thing I'd change is the fact that I have no clue what the land store is.

Some days the Land Store won't come up at all for long periods of time - overwhelmed by requests perhaps? Only to pop right up cleanly and efficiently hours later.

My apologies if this sounds like a tech support issue but it is *the* singular issue with regard to the Land Store - when unable to access it, it's not much good.

I don't know if it's a locally solvable issue or not, but it's "the big one."

On a more philosophic level:

The best change of all would be to remove the void sim reservations entirely, and *help* us grow unimpeded, not hinder us.

Move our sims if you have to - it will only make you more money if we succeed in making the kind of areas that residents desire.

Please, please, please reconsider this void sim reservation system idea.

The Land Store is located at:

Just login. There's a FAQ too, accessible from the top.

I would remove the reservations from the land store entirely. These reservations are nothing short of a protection racket. Please make it so all you can do is buy real land, not VOIDS! Thank you for asking.

I concur with the remove reservation's votes. I've been against this from the start.

The concept of auctioning void is not right. It is fundamentally flawed. I also not dare imagine the damage to SL and virtual world economy in general when the media pick up on "virtual void auctions". Very very bad concept :-(

Then why did you just buy 48 of them? I'm not really critizing you just curious. I'm a newby and bought one because I thought I might want my own island someday. Now that there is a sale I have seen other newbies doing the same thing.

In a system where there are, for argument's sake, an infinite number of possible sim positions and where moving a sim to another position on that infinite grid should be a ridiculously easy task, the auction of reservation spots for sims, created through an artificial limiting of the available space and the ridiculously prohibitive cost of moving a sim is, to put it plainly, extortion.

It's a false situation created simply for the purpose of attaining another income stream. Unfortuantely when one of the most vocal people against it then partakes in what seems to be the largest reservation so far, it really does diminish their argument entirely and removes the pressure on Linden Labs to actually stop creating such false demand.

What Moopf said.

Frankly it's nothing short of a scam, quite literally 'money for nothing' and LL should be ashamed of themselves for implementing it.

As 'avarage' users are allowed upto 5 accounts at their address, I would like to see it being made so that you can not reserve more than 5 sims.

I agree totally with all of this. I will never, EVER pay for a void reservation myself. I refuse to pay money for a void reservation on principle.

If my grid is blocked by reservations, I won't allow the reservation holder to extort me into buying them. I also will not pay Linden Lab sim moving fees to relocate my sims away from the reservation blockage. Instead, if they refuse to relocate my sims free of charge, or relocate the blocking reservations, I will simply create "shards". Every time this protection racket succeeds in blocking the expansion of my continent, I will start a carbon copy of EXACTLY THE SAME continent in another location.

This is my solution to the void sim extortion problem. What if anything has everyone else decided to do about it?

To be clear, moving regions is not a "ridiculously easy task". In fact it is a time consuming one for Lindens, and thus expensive; As you say “ridiculously prohibitive cost.” My guess is, we don’t even cover our costs for moving regions, even at the current rate. For now though, we will continue offering our residents the option of moving their regions.

For better or worse, the grid wasn’t really designed with the thought that regions would move. Furthermore, since moving regions requires human intervention, it isn’t a system that will scale with the growth of Second Life. In other words, we may not be able to hire people fast enough to move all the regions if we stick with our current methodology.

Thus one of the reasons for the reservations system was born, in the hopes that people would intelligently plan their future expansion, for those interested in contiguous regions. For more on this topic I strongly urge you to read Ryan Linden’s thoughts, they can be found at the end of the Help and FAQ’s section in the Land Store https://secondlife.com/apps/mapapps/buy

It may very well be that the Land Store is ahead of its time. However, the bulk of reservations thus far appear to be entirely valid. People reserving regions away from each other with the hopes of future reserved expansion, etc…

That all said, let’s say removal of the store wasn’t an option, what would you change to the current system to make it more palatable? In other words, what inherently is it about the ability to reserve space that is causing the majority of you to loath it?

I realise not actually the land store, but related at least...

I'd like to see a small change to the auto-completion of the bids at auction. Have an option on the site (defaults to on maybe), for the new implementation of autocompletion, and the option to turn it off so that those of us that use it (I suspect a majority) can buy land for group as they currently do.

This lets the people that are finding the former process confusing to continue with the new, more streamlined system, and those that know what they're doing it to go further. The basic and advanced options on the LindeX are a reasonable model for this.

Instead of developing a way to exploit the current flawed system that you conceed still might not meet demand why didn't you use that development time developing the equivelent of DNS servers? I know you don't want more central servers but if the entire internet can run on DNS servers I think SL can. Then moving a sim is as simple as verifying the location is legit and updating the entry without breaking events landmarks or even needing human intervention. I should be able to open my region/estate go to the general tab enter the new coordinates for the sim and click move. It then verify's the location is a legal move then updates the entry for the sim. Simple as that. Then when someone uses a landmark it queries the DB and routes them straight to the new location. If you truely want to be the metaverse your gonna have to do this someday now while you're small is a really good time.

I will not now or ever bid on void reservations. If that ever puts me in a position I want to expand and can't I will either shard like Shaun or I won't expand. I won't pay extortion money so you can make money off of not having to fix your flawed system. There is NO way around that.

Reservations never solved that.

-AR-B-

If A and B both want to expand and A puts Reservation bid on R B can't bid. It's still first come first serve. And if moving is as simple as changing the coords in Region/Estate the loser B can just pick a new location to move to when he's rdy to expand.

I totally agree.

It is in my opinion an out and out con to force landowners with Islands to pay more money to Linden Labs for sod all.

And in addition it opens up the potential to allow people to block genuine successful Island business expanding...which in turn is depriving Linden Labs of decent server revenue.

Mind you though it pails into insignificance compared with the sheer depth, perfidy and gall of the ingenious proposition to sell us all Linden Dollars for hard US cash (when the Terms Of Service specifically state Linden Dollars have no value)

If Linden Labs are short of cash or under pressure to increase revenues, (especially after the Vulture Fund put cash in) you should be honest enough to state it, take a pay cut or make a few people redundant, and perhaps increase tier or even offer equity in the business to existing subscribers. Mind you if you did that I would think the legal risk paragraphs would make interesting reading

Ive read the faq, and completely baffled. The reservations serve no purpose, one either buys or they dont. At this point Im so confused that Im about giving up on buying another sim to adjoin mine. I really liked the old way and now Im totaly confused.

In closing I would like to see it trashed.

Chris,

If there was one thing I could change about the Land Store, I would make it into a land store. Right now, it is an Island Store.

Moving is not as easy as picking a new location.
