i was wondering what sort of alternatives there are for getting yourself a sim beyond coming up with the cash upfront to LL? Is anyone operating a rent-to-own system? I heard there was at least one, but I think there should be at least a few by now? Anyone have an idea of who the best person to go through might be and perhaps some ways each seller differs?

There are no free lunches Lefty.. Pay up, this isn't Sweden. lol. Don't hijack my post unless you have something to offer the thread.... I said absolutely nothing about Free Lunch. I am inquiring about the payment options available. Which, by my best guess would imply i'm willing to pay slighly MORE. ~Lefty P.S. Sweeden? sheesh...

Lefty, people do rent to own, people straight out rent, people will sell you sims second hand which usually has a cheaper up front cost... I don't yet use these services so I can't point you to right people, but hopefully they will come into the thread an announce themselves. Your certainly on the right track, which is a better track that messing with Havok p.s. Sweden has like a 30%-60% tax rate, so they aren't looking for a free lunch.

Schwanson Schlegel advertised renting to own estate sims several months ago. IIRC, he charged $300/mo for twelve months. Estates cost more to purchase now so his price, if he's still offering the deal, is likely higher.
I do know that Dreamland will rent you an entire estate sim and will soon (v1.9) be able to turn all of the user functions, other than uploading a new RAW file, over to the repective rentor. I don't know what they charge, but even at $250/mo you'd have to rent the thing for nearly two years to pay the $1250 it costs to purchase an estate so, up to that point, you'd be saving money.
I suppose the nicest thing about buying one outright is that you can sell it at some point and recover the "equity." Land in Second Life doesn't appreciate in value as in real life because there's no shortage of it.

Not sure about land in Neualt; I think that's kept its value, though. Land value is an interesting metric. If we could get accurate sales information for SL somebody could code a simple monthly calculation: the average US$ per square meter selling price for land in each sim. Plot it on a map as a greyscale value for each sim, and display the set of maps rapidly in sequence. I wouldn't mind seeing that.

Fairland does Rent2Own of whole private sims Contact Land Control (monthly fees and duration of the lease can be negociated).

Kavai Conglomerate also offers rent to own deals as well. If you are looking to buy a sim but can't pay the startup fees, we have various payment plans to help.

....and I can also tell you that we have Europas lowest Company taxes.. Dear PetGirl: You are living in a dream world. Taxes in Sweden are 55% of your income. You spend more than half your life working for the Government. Hope you enjoy paying for the slackers who decided to live off your hardwork. I think I'm going to move to Sweden and mooch ass backwards off the system. NOTE: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sweden#Welfare_stateThe welfare state requires high taxes, but the population is generally affirmative of this. Sweden has a two step progressive tax scale with a municipal income tax of about 30% and a high income state tax of about 55% that kicks in when you earn more than about 300 000 SEK. The employing company pays an additional 32% of so called Employers fee. In addition, a national VAT of 25% is added to many things bought by private citizens except food (12% VAT) and transports and books (6% VAT). Certain items are taxed at higher rates, e.g. petrol/diesel, new cars and alcoholic beverages. The high rates of income taxation in combination with very influencial labour unions have kept differences in income at a minimum, resulting in little reward for individuals going through higher education as compared to individuals who start working for a living at an earlier age.

True! I originally put that into my p.s. and removed it because the p.s. was too long. Maybe I should of thought of p.p.s.! I wasn't knocking Sweden or taxes, I was just trying to defend that swedes aren't free loaders. It is great to see all the options for renting or renting to own. Keep them coming. Does anyone rent sims for just a week? I know LL does but I'm not sure of thier prices. I talk to potential customers who sometimes just need a sim 1 week out of every month.

From: Traxx Hathor Hmm don't you have land in Boardman, Khamon? Miramare's looking good too. Not sure about land in Neualt; I think that's kept its value, though. I do yes and it might fetch what I paid for it or better if it's ever sold, then again, it might not. Wouldn't surprise me either way. The "scarcity" in Boardman, Brown and DeHaro are artificed by the Linden enforced building codes though. The Nova Albion sims are also special cases with double prim allotments. So I stand humbly corrected on that point. There are a precious few places on The Grid All Hail The Central Grid that one can find land that will likely, at least, retain a reasonable value. From: someone Land value is an interesting metric. If we could get accurate sales information for SL somebody could code a simple monthly calculation: the average US$ per square meter selling price for land in each sim. Plot it on a map as a greyscale value for each sim, and display the set of maps rapidly in sequence. I wouldn't mind seeing that. There are whole heaping bunches of truck loads of data that would be interesting to see if LL would just publish the queries to raw files and let us compile and present them. I can only imagine that such data are either viewed as corporate data that must be secured against public inspection, or that LL simply feel that they must provide the proper compilations and interfaces for us to truly understand the inherent magnitude of compelling orders of economic factors in a synthetically supported economy. We just be users after all. One other possibility is that the tables are so utterly boned that someone couldn't just script the process in an afternoon. I generally get blank stares when I ask relational questions.

Off topic: Can I just say that I went to Sweden on holiday last year - twice. And it was very nice. And not at all expensive - except for beer. And the people were lovely. And I sat INSIDE A WHALE! A real one! Who needs low tax when you can sit inside a whale! Sweden ROCKS!
