Isn't there a box where you can enter a "SELL TO" name? Wouldn't that stop all the land swoopers if you just put your own name in there and checked it?

While it would be nice if more residents were warned of these dangers and given better instructions on how to use the land sales process (especially the "Sell To" option)

Ooops...I missed the previous post where it was already mentioned.

10 minute delay
06-11-2006 04:39
I think the 10 minute a good idea, although wont stop all errors. The 'confirm' box isn't really practical.

I buy and sell land but am based in RL in the UK, so I tend to be buying when alot of people are off line and similarly sell alot when I am offline. As a land trader, I want to buy and resell quickly, not wait 24 hours before I can do anything. If I was buying land to use myself, I would want to get on to it, to start building, again the delay would be a frustration.

As many of these threads state, to sell a piece of land requires quite a few checks and if people looked, they would be OK, but people are people and make mistakes and don't read. I wouldn't keep a 1L$ land purchase if it was an error and the seller IMd me. But I would buy it for sure.

It's the same on the L$ exchange, if you offer a limit buy or sell at the wrong price, someone will trade. To cry afterwards is niaive. Everyone has a responsibility to themselves and reading, before saying 'YES' would be far more sensible.

I agree that there is and should be a code of ethics, but lambasting people like me, because of a users error, is bizarre.

I believe most land traders are reasonable people, there will always be those who don't feel they need or should correct someone elses error, it's the same in all walks of life RL or SL.

Risks exist for a land buyer, we get caught out as well, buying land that becomes unattractive. Sometimes the seller knows this is going to happen, as they own the big plot next door on which they intend to put up a lag inducing smoky factory. Would those who don't like land traders, offer recompence?

If it wasn't for land traders, there would be very litttle movement in the market. We buy and enlarge/reduce plot sizes, offer them for rent and enable people to get a foot in the market and shift land from sellers, quickly. That comes at a price, which is when land is for sale at an attractive price, land traders will arrive.

While it would be nice if more residents were warned of these dangers and given better instructions on how to use the land sales process (especially the "Sell To" option), LL posting notices on their website or the message of the day warning people to beware of other residents trying to steal their property would be akin to posting "Beware of the Muggers" signs at the entrance to a public park. That would be bad advertising and that's bad for LL, SL and its residents.

Perhaps LL could add a 10-15 minute delay between ticking the Sell box and the parcel showing up in Find, that would at least help reduce the number of incidents like this.

Exactly. What we need is to preserve the free market, not introduce some new socialistic regulations.

Sorry to hear this has happened to you Second life just as in real life has its money hungry people that will just take what ever they can with out regaurd for any one or any thing.

this has been going on for the longest time.

a while back they changed it so that you needed to set a name to sell a plot for 0 L$ this helped a little. but was not complete the delay (as some one else mentioned) of adding the land to the find was suggested back then also but was never implemented.

It is the instant appearance of the land in the find that makes all of this possible. Remove the instant apparence of the land in the find and you will not see things such as happened here ever happen again.

An alternative to the delay would be that if land was set at L$1 then the seller would need to click a confirmation of sale when the land is provisionally purchased.

A delay for this would be perfectly reasonable.

It's not only selling land for $L1 by accident, I mean it's not just that particular sale amount that is the problem. Many newbies do the same thing but for $L512 because that's what they paid for there 1st land and they never changed that price in the box. Then for whatever reason, they check the sell box and there lot goes up for sale for $L512.

I don't think I'm a genius here but my big warning sign popping up I believe would get peoples attention and make them think twice. The warnings are there already but not in a way that says, HEY, STOP, THINK FIRST HERE, YOU COULD LOSE YOUR LAND IN THE NEXT 2 SECONDS!! I don't think implementing something like that would be the same as putting signs up in a park warning you to beware of muggers :)

pure unfettered evil!

Well, Doug the swooper who snatched my land just put it up for sale for 5k. Since I own the land on two sides of it ITS SOOOO IN MY FACE! I can stand on my nice stone observation wall, lean over the railings and look at all the trees he planted below to hide the THANKS DOUG, EVER HEARD OF ETHICS? sign. People like this dont belong in the business next to reputable traders. And as far as Linden support goes, the answer I got was, "SORRY BUT SINCE IT WAS PURCHASED LEGITIMATELY ...YADA YADA YADA." To which I replied, " not sure I agree upon the definition of legitimate."

: being exactly as purposed : neither spurious nor false
: accordant with law or with established legal forms and requirements
: conforming to recognized principles or accepted rules and standards.

May have been a proper purchase 'technically', but once made aware the sale was in error, it was no longer legitimate. Perhaps accepted rules and standards dictates that errors in judgement or mistakes should be dealt with a " too bad for you LOSER" attitude.
Cant see a business doing well that follows such a sleazy philosophy. Sooner or later your reputation catches up with you.

Should have actually read the warning popup. Your fault, not the swoopers.

Sorry, buts its true. Feel glad it was a smaller mistake than it could have been, and pay more attention next time. We don't need more warnings, more red tape to sell land. We need more people paying attention.

Theres such a nice little box on a sale, that you can choose to whom you want to sell the land to...that rules out 100% of the land snatchers...your not alone weve all prolly made that mistake ONCE
