Demand for land is weak, in spite of the flood of new accounts

Ahem! Someone mentioned that those of us with premium accounts do not get those Linden Dollar Stpends for free.

They aren't free. They come out of the pockets of every person with a linden dollar balance in their account.

It's basically wealth redistribution, welfare in other words.

No, stipends don't come out of anyone else's pocket. Especially premium accounts, which are paying per month to get a little in return in the form of spending money.

SL is expensive enough as it is for those who actually want to achieve anything of a non-commercial nature, removing the stipend bonus that we get in return for our commitment to SL would be damaging.

The price of "cheap" land has gone up mostly because the Lindens raised the lowest bid at auction and did away with available public land.

But there are huge chunks of the mainland for sale at silly prices. Tiny parcels surrounded by ban lines, snow land surrounded by junk, tiny underwater parcels in lakes filled with trash, etc., are just not worth L$4 per sm, much less the outrageous prices being asked for such lots.

Second Life needs some good ecologists.

Suppose I sell you 51 shares of the stock in a company with 100 shares outstanding, you are happy because you are a majority shareholder now and it's a lot of money. There are 49 other people with 1 share.

I then exercise a clause to issue 1000 more shares to all the stockholders. Each stockholder gets 20 more shares.

You now have 71 shares out of 1100. You aren't so happy. That money came straight out of your pocket and into the other people's.

The tiny parcels sell very well, and they sell very quickly at below average prices. There are many people that just want a worthless peice at a low price to advertise they buy land. There are many advertisers that only want 3 or more prims to put up signs, and there are many people that just want a few more prims, but they only have 16-256m2 left till their next teir. The groups make this even more likely as people suddenly have the tiny 10% bonus added on to what they expected. The tiny parcels are worth something to someone. I doubted that they were worth something at first, but my tiny parcels are selling so quickly that I'm starting to turn a decent profit.

In the meantime I'm working on keeping my parcels clean, signless, and full of plant life. I'm not sure if that makes me an ecologist, lol. I can't guarantee what the next person will do with the land, but I will always have my teir's worth looking as nice as i can make it. If no one wants the land, I'll just sell it all cheap and cash out. I only have my premium membership fee invested, and my teir fees were paid for in the first two weeks. Fun little experiment playing with the small stuff. I never expected this to be the way to make money in SL.

Thats because most of the new accounts will be alts of existing players, or created purely for griefing purposes.

When something is free, it is generally perceived to be valueless. By making SL free forever with unlimited gameplay, there is very little incentive for people to go up to premium to buy land (and of course create more badly needed revenue for Linden Labs).

Unfortunately the removal of credit card verification has made the whole exercise a waste of time, but if SL had a 14 day free trial where you could cancel at any time and not be charged, or charged a $9.99 one-off fee to continue paying on the basic level, then it would be perceived by the great unwashed to have some value, and therefore a reason for giving it a go - with the likely bonus that they would become so hooked on what SL offers that they'd go and splash out on some land to take a full part in the experience for themselves.

As it stands, SL has the value of an aeroplane sick bag. It serves a purpose, but has no long term usage potential or attraction (especially after it has been used).
