Configurable Chat Distance

From my understanding, the following chat distances apply:
Whisper - 10m Say - 20m Shout - 100m
It would be very helpful if there was something either between Say & Shout, or ideally, if Shout distance could be configurable with a parameter..... such as...
/shout50 This would only go 50m /shout30 This would only go 30m /shout100 This would only go 100m
There are plenty of instances where you need to be able to communicate thru longer distances than 20m, but annoying your neighbors with a blanket 100m shout is undesireable. For example, my land parcel is 40m x 90m. To send a message across my parcel, its impossible to do so without using shout - however that is irritating to my neighbors on the short sides. I'd love to do a /shout40 - but that doesn't exist today.
I understand repeaters can be used to achieve a similar effect, but using that method creates a new problem from a sim resource perspective, and scripts written by others are typically locked down - if they used shout to begin with, I'm stuck if its something I purchased.
I'd think, if used responsibly, having shout configurable between 20-100 meters would be helpful to the community overall, and reduce the need to use repeaters unneccesarily.
Thanks!
Travis

I fully support a configurable chat distance. A script function to do this would also be needed. llChat(integer channel, float distance, string message);

I support the idea Travis, great suggestion! Strife, that'd be a cool syntax, maybe put distance before channel however, so then it can be distance, channel, message, which could be more logical. I dunno, but regardless it'd be awsome to have. Kris, I would like to add to that llInsideVoice(0, "Welcome To The Library!" and llSexyWhisper(0, "hey there big boy" . I generaly think it'd be great if one could control the distance of the message, going anywhere from 0.1 to 100.0.

ROFL Blueman. The idea is oddly intriguiging I actually don't agree with configurable chat distances.....last thing I want to do is overhear Travis yabbering even after I ran out of distance Kidding, of course, but still I think you have to limit it at some point and it seems fair already. Maybe this could be sorted by having channels that you can "subscribe" to... like temporary group chat. *considers writing something...* --Jack Lambert

Totally agree

Tracked down this thread after sitting on the sofa of my new house and realising that the place was so big I couldnt hear guests who who were standing at the front door. And I said, "damn wish there was a way to extend the chat distance so it would at least reach the front door." Just another 10 meters would do it! Configurable chat distance for your own property anyway. Time to set up a proposal, this would be handy.

I Dunno, I kinda agree with Jack

I kinda agree with Jack Lambert on this one. The last thing I would want is to hear 20 people shouting at unimaginable distances when your trying to relax or something. I like the current limit and also think that it is fine as it is.

Yes Devon, I see your point. But...

Im not saying have it so you can scream as far as you want anywhere you want. Im saying making it available property specific so the owner can decide if he wants people to be able to hear each other from across the room. I need another 10 meters to accomplish this. Gimme a slider control.

Or one could have the ability to set the chat distance to the limits of one's property for one's self or other selected avatars.
Or one could get a map and a drawing cursor and be able to draw the range of one's chat, within some maximum. This would enable one to limit one's chat to within one's house, or even within a room.

Of course, adding a material that acts as a chat barrier (regardless of the configured distance) would also help.
Maybe it would help to move the center of the chat radius to a point somewhere in front of the avatar (in the direction the avatar is facing). This would extend the distance in that direction, but reduce the distance behind the avatar, both desirable effects IMHO. And a bit more realistic, as well (not that realism is always the driving force in SL).

A directional chat radius configurable in the direction your facing would help in my situation as well. Just want to be able to extend the chat distance as far as I want on my own prop, Without having to 'shout' which travels all over town. I have my prop set to the limit sound to property, but shout overrides this.

I like this idea. Build it into the land tools to restrict chat or shout to the specific parcel or broadcast chat parcel wide.

I've been looking for something that would restrict chat in your house. It seems there should be a way to close the doors and windows to your house, or whatever enclosed space you own, and the only chat in or out would have to be by IM. I take it from this thread that I can stop looking for that sort of security feature for now.

I do that without trying Mr Smiley

All I need to do is stand in the middle of my living room and nobody can hear me outside, CUS MY LIVING ROOMS TOO DAMN BIG. ( The price I pay for having a dance pit visible from my favorite comfy chair). I need to get my chat distance to cover the whole space from end to end, then isolate it from the outside world. More control over my enviroment is a good thing Vote prop 360 for chat control distance.

This seems like something we should probably have, particularly on the LSL side, but I have an additional suggestion: I'd like to see three land toggles, where you could set the following on a per-parcel basis: X No outside chat comes inside parcel. X No inside chat goes outside parcel. X Chat inside parcel is heard by all. These would do the more specific things people here are after, while also adding some much needed privacy features.

Just to refresh this thread...
I was doing some landscaping for a client last night and noticed that he had a new neighbor in the adjoining sim. A new neighbor with a Tringo business who does everything by SHOUTING so that everyone in 100 m can hear.
This is one of the rudest things I have ever seen in SL.
Please add to this feature
X Block all shouting from neighboring parcels

Thanks for your support, everyone! Just an FYI - a lot of these individual suggestions are rolled up into Prop 244, which was posted back in April. If you haven't taken a look at it already, please do!

Chat should be controllable in three dimensions, so one can have high rise apartment buildings or hotels in which you don't hear your neighbors be they left right front back or above or below you.
