This is somethin I`ve been discussing with someone at home(RL home) Just an idea bein kicked around...full of holes I`m sure What if, everyone workin for LL, was forced to spend x amount of time on a weekly basis as a resident in SL? Not just runnin round as a Linden They would have to take a regular name like anyone else, but be under contract not to divulge that name to any other Lindens as there actual identity. To avoid preferential treatment. They would have to live like everyone else and deal with the same probs as everyone else, and when they send a ticket or whatever, again, not be allowed to divulge there Linden identity. I think the hardest part would be forming some sort of oversight group to make sure they follow the rules on it. Well the hardest part would actually be to get LL to do it at all. They could get first hand experience, from noob on up with all the things we deal with pretty much daily Crashes ,bugs, jerks, griefers, sneak attacks by Gremlin Linden walkin off with your inven, Harrasment..etc... Just an idea, Wouldn`t this help give them a better view of whats REALLY goin on in SL?

I think you would be suprised how many Lindens already have regular alts. Lindens are fully aware of the issues in SL. But what one person may see as an issue, another may not see as an issue. Linden Lab itself is a house divided, with differing factions fighting over how things should be done. This is common in most companies. The fact that Cory Linden recently left makes that painfully apparent, if it wasn't already. I have many of my own theories about why things dont' get done, but I'll keep those to myself.

I'm sure lots of Lindens use SL recreationally as well, and I bet some of them often register alts as newbies just to test the system while at work too. Why should we all be assuming they don't do this as a matter of course? Nobody has established that they don't.

even as a linden I am sure they deal with the same issues we do
and just because they are a linden they can not just do as they please when it comes to griefers, sure if it warrents it they can ban or whatnot, but they have to follow their job rules
I would not take a personal vendetta against a griefer and risk losing my job if I were a linden
and as for the lag and such, just because they are a linden, doesn't mean they can control the lag
so really no need for them to be incognito hehe

I never said they don`t, I do believe many do come into SL.
But do all of them?, probably not, so the ones that don`t, really don`t know .
But people will see this idea I was kickin round anyway they choose.
I Just wanted to clarify..I made no assumptions of anything, was simply asking opinions on an idea.

I do think most Liasons are familiar with the practical side of SL and very aware of the common problems/grievances, but I don't think most developers are and they're the category that really matters the most since they'll decide on what's important to fix/change. I don't doubt that they're very knowledgable and talented, but there's a big difference between staring at code all day and testing it on an internal grid and how that code actually performs in real life (or between designing a UI from a theoretical viewpoint and how people end up using it in practice). --- Confronting Lindens with reality doesn't have to get too complicated though: have each Linden buy a plot the same way we have to instead of assigning them one on the Linden village sims. We might get "mute chat across parcel boundaries" sooner if a Linden has to hold an office hour while the neighbours are throwing an "Xcite-chatty" orgy. Or prioritize returning partially overlapping prims when their office get burried under the neighbour's megaprim. Or back "visual muting" when they have look at a lovely forest of spinning ads.

I think almost all LL employees (esp. the liaisons, the engineer prob. a little less) log into SL on a regular basis. Liaisons almost all come from the community themselves, and often still have their 'old' avatar, which they use in their spare time. (A lot of them are still addicted The issues is that there are very few highly skilled SL 'specialists' among the LL employees. Especially concerning the build tools. (Most of the engineers are able to use LSL quite well, most liaisons know how to use the community tools/interfaces as well as residents). This often causes updates to break functionality which LL probably wasn't even aware people used. Two examples: 1. A lot of versions ago, LL decided to make the alignment center of a selected structure the 'geometric' center, where it previously was the last selected prim. This seems like a good idea, except it makes it extremely difficult to realign larger structures onto grid. Making it so that once a structure built on grid is 'taken' it basically has to be finished, or all objects have to be realigned to grid after rezzing 2. In windlight, when selecting multiple objects/sides with multiple textures, the texture tab seems to default to a random side within the selection. The regular client always shows the last selected texture. This makes it very hard to retexture bigger selections. The quickest way was, select multiple sides, lastly select the object with the right texture, then open and immediately apply texture picker, and 'tab' through the texture tab items. This is no longer possible in windlight. It's not something easily solved by having them log in as residents, but it would require special 'useablility' testers, which have a lot of experience with specific parts of SL. Now, these issues are usually brought to the attention of LL by residents in Public Jira, but we're already dealing with Release Candidates in those cases.

Sorry, too much coffee. I like that overall idea about them owning land and livin among the us restless natives Maybe have it` set up so not too many can live in the same area as each other? So as to avoid a miniature Linden village`s happening?

From: Love Hastings And they should all have to run RestrainedLife... What is RestrainedLife? Does that make you act as if you were/are from Victorian times? Forced to wear a tight corset, huge skirt, etc. for women, and whatever men would wear. I normally wear a tux, anyway, when I am a human.

Hmm well if your Domminant partner decides to make you wear that, then yes, it apparently stops you changing anything you wear including clothing if you are locked by your Dom/me. It's an alternative 3rd party SL viewer.

I would be for them spending LESS time in SL as residents,
Less time surfing Monster.com and other websites,
Less time playing video games,
and more time working on SL which is what they are being paid for.
The internet has easily Cost as much in Productivity as it has Saved.
Before you go to click the "quote" button and refute me, consider where it is you read the forums from.
For many here the answer is "From work"
-------- *what the Lindens do when not on the company's dime, is of course entirely up to them.

1. I'm sure they know all about the many problems we face daily.
2. Just as now, it won't make any difference whether they here or not. As things will still remain the same as they are now.

I never read the forums from work The person who is browsing the internet instead of working would probably be away from their desk nattering at the water cooler otherwise, at least if they're at their desk they will answer their phone.

Much easier to fake like you are working surfing the internet than yakking at the water cooler. ALT-TAB is your friend.
