I don't think that follows Isablan. If you want privacy you can just get yourself your own private island and not allow general access. If what you say were true, then why are sims allowed to be closed to general access?

Valid point, however, I would guess that if one were engaging in a highly illegal activity that a sim would be too traceable and too high profile. Funds can be shifted between accounts to rent regular land, but sims are a credit card only acquisition and not so easy to get rid of if one needs to disappear quickly. It just seems logical to me that needing to be mobile at the drop of a hat is part of that world.

Actually, this _isn't_ possible.

One could use a different skin, couldn't they?

I'll ask an obvious noob question.

If I'm sitting inside a completely sealed box, can others still see me inside?

How?

If you disable camera controls in your menus at the top of the screen, you can move your camera viewpoint away from your avatar to, if you develop some skill at it, essentially anywhere in the sim and maybe adjacent sims. Yes, your camera viewpoint can be moved through solid walls. This is the crux of the privacy problem in SL.

Thanks Har,

I always disable camera controls as the veryfirstthing I do when logging in since I am working on a huge build. And, as such, I can easily focus my camera on things pretty much anywhere I want. But I don't seem to be able to get through walls. My camera just stops at the wall texture.

Hmmm....

You may need to rotate it a bit to get through the walls

You just focus on the outside of the wall, then pivot the camera around to the other side...

Lag and Packet loss is bad enough without trying to add more layers of complexity to accomplish this. Sure. It could be done. And "running in place" and "slow motion" avatars will become the norm rather than the exception.

Here's how I look at it...

SL is like a novel or a painting, and I am the artist. I create what I type, and what I build, and it is all in public.

To then try to figure out ways to *stop* people from looking at it seems counter-productive then. If I really don't want others to see my world, I should just stick to photo-shop. (no PSP offence intended).

SL, the world's best simultaneous spontaneous contemporaneous work of art, music, and fiction.
