Doesn't SL use IK (inverse kinematics) with skeletal models? If not, when can we expect it?

I have to say that I'm deeply in love with Second Life...my nitpicks are minor, the concept of the world and what has been achieved to this point thrill and inspire me.
I love Catherine's suggestions. Although I'm mostly happy with the avatar customization editor, something like what is available in Poser would be a tremendious addition to the world. I'd also like to be able to set an avatar's skin, or portions of an avatar alpha or transparent and have those parts be invisible. Of course the nametag would still be visible however. This would help a lot in creating non-humanoid avatars (animals, some types of robots, and other things). Originally posted by Misnomer Jones 10. Ability to highlight and delete more than one item at a time would be great. I also wish we could cut & paste between folders. To have to drag an item to a new folder when you have a huge inventory is really painfully slow. Many improvements are needed here. I'm at work right now and don't have SL open to exactly quote how things are labled, but on the Inventory Window is a File selection. Inside that menu is Create File, and Open New Window. If you click on Open New Window, it opens a second copy of the inventory and that way you can drag and drop things easily between folders. Perhaps this is not as nice as a tree view, but it's very handy. Minyon Monde showed me this, and it's a godsend. Misnomer, I quite agree on being able to select and delete or drag and drop multiple things inside of objects and inventories, this would make things much faster. Many times I select several things, copy them, paste them into a folder and n delete the originals. I'd also like to have a way to set permissions on many things at once, possibly everything in a given folder. I upload a lot of textures, and it takes me forever to set them for Copyable/Modifiable/Transferable when I put them up for sale. Lum _____________________

Most of all I would like Snap To Grid in the build tool to work correctly all the time. Right now if I set my grid to 0.5m sometimes a prim will snap to 230m, 230.5m, 231m, etc, and sometimes for no apparent reason things will suddenly start snapping to 230.15m, 230.65m, 231.15m, just for example. The best is when some prims snap correctly and some don't.

Wow, I cant believe I never responded to this thread.
I'd like to constructively bump this thread by stating which suggestions have been fuffilled. Originally posted by Catherine Omega 1. Proper I/O, as discussed here. 3. Full LSL control over all the settings available in the edit menu, as described here. 8. A complete rework of the avatar customization system, coupled with a custom animation system. The interface would ideally be more like Poser than the current monstrosity. 10. <snip> As a small enhancement, the current inventory could use a "collapse all open folders" button at the top of the window </snip> 11. Per-parcel chat/sound/rendering filters, so if I don't want to, I don't have to see, hear or read anything or anyone that's not on my land. (See here.) Notes: 1. Sadly, I was unable to follow the link for this suggestion... but we do have inbound XML-RPC and outbound email now. 3. llSetPrimitiveParams, although buggy, is this suggestion's implementation. 8. W00t! We have this now... sorta. 11. The new sound streaming API has allowed for at least the 'hear' part of the filtering. Originally posted by Misnomer Jones 8. Custom animations, when they come. need to come with permissons. I imagine people will make these for sale . Creator rights should be protected. I like to see a gender neutral (or all inclusive) option in avatar customization. Removal of limbs has also been mentioned repeatedly. 10. Ability to highlight and delete more than one item at a time would be great. I also wish we could cut & paste between folders. To have to drag an item to a new folder when you have a huge inventory is really painfully slow. Many improvements are needed here. Both of these suggestions have been implemented partially. Originally posted by Xylor Baysklef 1. External I/O, as mentioned by Catherine. 3. The ability to fully modify an object, including hollowing, twisting, shearing, etc. 14. Custom avatar animation, as mentioned by Catherine. 15. float llLn(float x). It is mysteriously missing in the math library, and the logical counterpart to llPow. All these have been implemented ![]() Originally posted by Oz Spade 2. I/O functionality, this would open up SL to so much stuff and make it even closer to becoming a metaverse, basicly making it possible for the informational internet and SL to beconea unified one. 3. Custom Gestures, my body aches for this, I would love it if it was something like Flash animation, you set keypoints where the hand is here and then here and then it fills in the rest of the movement naturely, scripted would be more complicated but would be nice too, might allow for more controll, Custom Gestures should also be a file type that can be sold etc as others can now. 5. GUI skinnability, I know its coming eventualy, but all the .ini files are there and ready to be used, all we need is for them to be finished and a GUI edit window for it and we're set. 6. Everything we can do in Edit we should be able to do in LSL. 8. Streaming audio, sure having winamp open isn't a hassle, but not everyone wants to run winamp or whatever, would be easier to just have it directly from SL. 9. Change the Snapshot button, this is a pet peeve of mine, an approval window and/or an option to make it so all snapshots go to disk (even with the button) is all I'm asking for. 10. Way to preview clothe textures before uploading, this would save many a spent 10L$ on getting that shirt to look right. 19. Change it so having Mute All Sound checked does not still have you download sounds. Why download them when I don't want to hear them? 22. New "group" type for 2 people, maybe called Mariage or something since technicly 2 people is not a group. (3's a crowd) 23. Expand and add to llDialog, new line command should be allowed to work, input text boxes, radio options, and check boxes would be nice additions also. 26. Improved camera, Smarter camera that makes sure there is NO object inbetween your avatar and the camera, and if there is, zoom in past the object. 2. Inbound XML-RPC, outbound email, it still needs work though. 3. Not as extensive as what you suggest, but at least we can upload animations now ![]() 5. This still needs some more work, but LL is moving toward it, we have custom keybindings now. 22. They're working on this. Right now they have a "Partner" field in the profile, but atm it doesnt do anything. 23. I agree, more work needed on llDialog, but at least newline works now ![]() 26. I *think* changes were made to the camera to allow for this. I noticed some rather significant changes in these last few updates. Originally posted by Kex Godel 1. chat script commands that are invisible to everyone else 3. custom AV animations 5. internet I/O 19. ability to preview clothes before uploading 23. collapse all folders in inventory 24. chat action prose (/me) 25. sandbox cleanup alerts Yup, all of these are in (save outbound RPC for #5) Originally posted by Jordan Cotton 2) Internet I/O. Not that I'd use it directly, but I'm excited to see what others do with it. No outbound yet though ![]() ------------------------------------- As for me, I want:

What I would really like to know is why the heck must we have a convoluted system of email and XML RPC instead of raw sockets support like, uh, everyone else does???
Thank you. Oh, and why should LL be any more paranoid about what I do with my SL account than, say, any old ISP or shell account provider or even your average web host? I cant really see what on earth is so wrong about sending large volumes of email, XML RPC requests or outgoing connections of any sort if people are paying LL $980 setup fees plus $195 a month for their own personal server. Are you people even aware of how far that money will take you when getting a web server? They are much cheaper than SL sims, you know, and they dont unduly restrict your development work. Just charge people for excess bandwidth usage or something... like everyone else does? Let's get a more professional attitude here, SL is not a game anymore, if it ever was one to begin with. _____________________

I know that this moves a tad astray from the original intent of the question but my list is:
1. proper documentation of software changes (build and LSL mostly) 2. consistency of policy actions 3. more visible system of justice 4. a pony |

In principle, the bar would be raised high enough that it would only happen to spammers
![]() Seriously though, if LL truly wants this to be seen as a development platform, they need to start acting like, uhm, all the other platforms in the world, and TRUST the developers. Can anyone please tell me what's the point of having limits that are easy to get around? Like, the "huge" 20 second email limit that is supposed to "prevent spamming". What prevents me from forking that into another script, or prim, or having a pool of 250 prims with 40 scripts each, all sending email? It's silly. Frankly I dont really understand how LL wants to be seen as a serious development platform and a social MMOG at the same time. It's just silly. _____________________

0) Imporve the I/O
1) Better prim management controls for land - either assign a prim limit for a piece of land or allow the land owner to specify a limit based for a list of users 2) Allow non-land owners the ability to set their home on someone else's land, eitehr via an access list or as a simple checkbox in the About Land options 3) Allow an external script editor. PLEASE GOD, FOR ALL THAT IS HOLY! 4) Better animation controls - include an event that tells an object when an animation is ended or has changed ( should also tell the object the AV id) 5) Allow users to ignore IMs from people 6) External IM portal |

I dont think it does really. It just happened, by accident, because of Ben, Andrew and other Lindens who are into this. I'm a very bad judge of people, but when I heard Philip Rosedale speaking at the 1st anniversary proceedings I suddenly understood a lot that didnt make sense before. Philip's avatar looks pretty geeky, so I always figured Philip himself was geeky, and that his visions would be geek visions - ie create development platform and so on. My impression coming across at the 1st anniversary celebrations was so very different from that. Philip came across as someone not at all geeky who thrives in social environments and business contexts. Call me crazy but I'd say SL as it stands is exactly the SL that Philip Rosedale dreamed of when he first started putting the SL wheels in motion. Azelda |

I've come to realize the same thing through my interactions with the various parts of SL support. SL is a social world first and a development platform second. If you want to pull at the strings of LL convince them that a change will better the community in some way instead of saying it will make your scripting life easier.

Strife, I'm afraid it's not that bleak. Since well before I got here, ideas from residents about making scripting easier and more powerfull have been implemented. Sure not EVERY feature we ask for, but they do their best.
#1 - llGetSex #2 - 3rd person camera controls #3 - obj->obj sim-wide communication that doesn't lag FPS like llListen, fix llListen lag too #4 - auto-fix/auto-complete and search/replace in editor #5 - no max distance on llRezObject, let us rez anywhere in sim #6 - rpc with outside world without polling #7 - numeric arrays #8 - perl style HASH'ES! whoot! #9 - why not perl style regexs? #10 - SIM profiling screen that shows us every script and how much cpu time its using or used since script reset. Also make sure we can see ALL scripts, not just the ones we own. _____________________
