How about a constrain chat to parcel option that if enabled, sends chat to every av/object in said parcel, but objects and av's outside the parcel dont hear anything?

ps. after havok 2.

Good idea. I have seen many cross-talk conversations between seperate groups on different plots all within 20m. Plot specific chat would be really cool actually.

That sounds like a great idea, and we will think of ways to set more privacy controls on a per-parcel level.

In the meantime, if you are having a pow-wow and would like to keep the conversation more constrained, you can context-click on another character and select 'talk to.' When in that mode, several people can talk but the chat relay is kept inside a smaller area.

Social norms dictate that you should usually only use the 'talk to' controls when you already know the people involved.

What is "talk to" range, 10m? I use that on rare occasion. The only thing I dont like about it is I cant move and I stare at the one I am talking with. Most of my friends are used to my appearance, but my stare along with my horns and expression can be unnerving to some. And, I am fidigity, I like to move around a lot while chatting.

I like this idea alot. :)

It would also help clear the other channels of unnesisary shouting by objects that may travel farther than needed. Dunno how that would really help anything though, lol.

But I'd love to see this.

I was thinking of an idea where you couldn't hear someone thats inside a house, or inside a box etc. like in RL, or you'd have to get right up to the wall. But that would be uber hard and uber lag I'd think since you'd have to take in account where everyone is and if theres x ammount of object mass between them etc. So your idea basicly fixes that and could kind of make it work the same (if the house was on a property the person wasn't).

And what about adding a "Stop Focusing On This Person" option while in "Talk-To"? I like the talk to feature, but hardly anyone uses it.

Unfortunately "talk to" is a really weirdly defined sort of thing that most people don't understand.
I've had a lot of new people who tried to use "talk to" with me thinking it was a private IM (which I can sort of understand from the name of it) and then get offened when I didn't want to be locked into only talking to them while other friends were in the area.
So plot-specific chat as a replacement for the vague "talk to" would be much appreciated. Especially if you happen to build your dream house next door to someone who has lots of events or something.

The thing about "Talk To" is I never remember to use it, and if I do, I'm too lazy to bother.... :p

Unfortunately at events, "Talk to" has become somewhat of a nightmare as new residents often use it as an initial method communicating (in my encounters at least). I've been "Talk to flooded" at more than one event because of one or more persons attempting to use that on me - repeatedly after I canceled.

Maybe if it was called something different it would be used more appropriately i.e., for couples or groups gathered in 10m range.

If we can limit chat area, why not streaming sound from objects, etc.?
Like if my neighbor has a jukebox that's over 40m away, why do I have to hear it in my parcel?

If there was a way to limit chat to a parcel, that would be awesome. If there was a way to limit SOUND, that would be... just.... no... words. Please do that. :)

Now, if there was a feature to disable RENDERING off-parcel... oooh! :)

For full support of this idea:

Parcel options:
[ ] Block out-going chat
[ ] Block in-coming chat
[ ] Block out-going sounds
[ ] Block in-coming sounds
