From: Malachi Petunia Saying you are part of the outgroup by virtue of never having tried to be part of the group is a tad self-defeating. Now that seems a little unfair, Mal Lookup my posting history on SLU, I was there for months! I even wrote a few limericks! And it all went fine, but after all those words, there was still no one with whom I would exchange a wink. Except of course Ray, but he's here too! My posts were generally ignored, and it just seemed an uphill battle. I got cranky, and that was a good cue to boogie. Edit: Oh, and this is not an accusation of clique-iness. It isn't a clique when people have connections with each other ... it's just reality. There is no exclusion at SLU ... but because the connections between folks are deep there, it takes quite some time to work into them. If you don't have the time to spend, you may never get there. This community is much looser-knit, a new person can get to the group hug point in the course of a single thread. .

From: Nika Talaj I got cranky, and that was a good cue to boogie. I can't argue with you there. If it (for all "it" isn't a pleasing recreation, don't do it.

I'm a big SLU fan, Cristiano does a great job. These forums feel like they've been abandoned by their owners, which is unfortunately, because there is some really great information shared here. Without the owners taking responsibility, however, the signal to noise ratio isn't nearly as good as it could be.
Regards,
-Flip

I routinely leave little bite-sized nuggets of Aimee wisdom at SLU.
Sort of like bunny poop but tastes nicer.

From: Nika Talaj I never felt I got any traction over at SLU. Maybe BECAUSE of the warmth and tightness of the community there? The thread cited in the OP is a good example - it's really sweet, but if you didn't know Brig was married and you've never intereacted directly with her, you might feel a little intrusive even posting your good wishes.
Similarly, because you can't honestly join in a Sarah Nerd lovefest because you've never met her, you've never been to SLCC, you don't know what happened at Second Citizen, and you've never seen a pic of Joshua's cock and don't really care to, you can feel a little ... out of step.
People are welcoming enough, it's just that they have connections with each other that you can see, but not duplicate. . When I joined SLU, I barley knew a few of the members. I was a bit intimidated because I admired several of the members from what I knew of there SL careers. But I took a chance and jumped right in. After a few days of posting I felt like it was my new home because everyone welcomed me in with open arms once they got to know me. The only reason for tightness is because its a smaller group of posters than here in the official forums so it's impossible not to get to know one another. When I see people post how SLU is to tight to join in, I know this is just because they didn't give it a real try or didn't really want to become part of the wonderful family there. I'm very thankful I did. And FYI, anyones welcome to join in a Sarah Nerd love fest. I won't complain. And I've never seen a picture of Joshua's cock, but I'd look if given the chance.

From: Nina Stepford just remember that if you disagree with joshua nightshade there is going to be dramehs. Joshua Nightshade (banned on SL Forums here) and Tenshi Vielle are excellent reasons WHY NOT to go to SLU if you do not want to be personally attacked about your Real Life in a congratulatory thread about something good. See for yourself: 2 Reasons to NOT go to SLU Who the hell wants that kind of drama?

From: Malachi Petunia How do you think they made those connections? They weren't born with them. They came from a time when SL was a better place to socialize and through forums.secondlife when it was a better place to socialize. I've met two active posters on SLU in real life, have never been to an SLCC or even a Flip-Philly drinkfest. In fact, I probably annoy a goodly fraction of SLU denizens, yet I enjoy it (not the annoying people part). Saying you are part of the outgroup by virtue of never having tried to be part of the group is a tad self-defeating. I think it would cause less grief for someone to make their own connections anew rather than try to form bonds with a group that is already tight and fixed. Especially if they are relatively new to SL...this 'They came from a time when SL was a better place to socialize' kind of attitude doesnt help. It makes new members feel like theyre unwanted spoilers of an otherwise perfect world. Ive stuck my head in the door of SLU and while its not a zoo its still no picnic. Some people even find this forum intimidating and this one is all sunshine, lollipops and rainbows in comparison to others. So good luck with the recruitment.

I haven't been to SLU much lately, but I like it. The Forum Software actually works, and there are places to discuss everything under the sun. There are some colorful personalities there definitely, but it's just as easy to ignore anyone who annoys you as it is here. I definitely recommend staying out of the politics forum unless you are very thickskinned and lean to the left. Most there are friendly and welcoming, and take you based on what you say. It's like anything else. It's what you make of it and it won't be everyone's Mug of Beer.

I like SLU, I lurk there. I never have much to say though,so I don't post. But the posters there seem pretty cool and interesting to me.

Was it not SLU that was running that SL boycott some time ago? How did it work out?

From: Lowen Raymaker Was it not SLU that was running that SL boycott some time ago? How did it work out? SLU is the host of ProjectOpenLetter.com - it wasn't a boycott per se, it was an open letter to try to get LL to listen and respond to serious problems in SL. It was a mixed success - it did get thousands of signatures and media attention, and LL had a town hall meeting to discuss some of the issues. All in all, no regrets on it.
