What continues to piss me off is the "overblown butts and breasts" comments. What about the people with big breasts, big asses, and big hips in real life? I know that most of you are limited to the images in the western media and think that women should be coat hangers with no shape and no curves, but in real life, real women have curves. It is a shame that you can't make an avatar that looks like yourself without having some loser on the internet shoved their fucked up body image issues down your throat.

Well, from my perspective it's not the large hips and breasts that is the issue, but the combination of those with tiny waists. A shape that you very rarely see in nature. So far as I am concerned, many of the female avatars one sees are not representations but parodies of the female shape.

As are, let me hurriedly add, many of the muscle bound males one sees around.

Well most of the female avatars are sexually repressed men, so some of that logic doesn't fly. The rest are bored housewives on the verge of divorce willing to do anything for attention.

With all due respect, I think that this statement is particularly damaging to women, in general--inside SL and out. We (American women, specifically) are, I think, at the intersection of a pivotal sciological crossroads. I am making reference to an article I read this morning:

http://www.azcentral.com/news/articles/0919mommytrack-ON.html

Reductionist thinking helps no one. Though you might have been joking, your stature in the SL community is certain to influence others. Should this be the case, I, for one, will not be thought of in these terms.

Do I have a sense of humor? Usually. But this issue is too important to be taken lightly. Is my skin too thin? Do I need to grow a set of breasts? Perhaps.

I find it interesting that you take issue with the American 'beauty ideal,' but dismiss more pressing and potentially more damaging socioeconomic issues.

As to the forums being a joke (or for joking), should that be the case, I am finished wasting my time. I honestly believed that change could happen here. I honestly held, no matter how absurd things get, that discussion will actually begin to solve problems and bring light to darkness.

Just a tiny little side note, you and and certain loquacious blogger seem to be in complete agreement:

Second Life has really performed a sterling economic feat that teh RL could never manage without major embarrassment: bringing together scores of bored middle-aged American soccer moms working part-time at Walmart, along with European ladies up late after their second shift at the pub

Meh.

So female avatars need to be ugly and sexually repressed? Furthermore any avatar that isn't is obviously played by a sexually frustrated male.

Well I guess that makes me a horny sexually frustrated wanna be lesbian male. But then I've been many things to many people online. I've been an attention whoring dyke, and a confused fag, and so many other things I don't even know where the list of false accusations and blanket statements being applied to me wrongly ends.

For god's sake do everyone a favor and stop with blanket statements. Or else I can always throw this one in: everyone who spends a significant chunk of their time online is a stupid loser with no life.

You people tossing out those blanket statements, do you like being called a loser in a blanket statement? No? Didn't think so. That's why I don't use them, why don't you do everyone a favor and return the courtesy, huh?

Or I guess you can go on acting like you know it all and sum up a widely diverse demographic like the one of SL's players by making more blanket statements and showing your utter lack of comprehension of the matter to anyone reading them, and embaress yourself in the process. Guess that's your choice.

It's nothing more than a mere pet peeve to me after all. I'm still a pretty, talented young woman with her whole life ahead of her in real life, so what do I care what a faceless entity on the intarweb says?

Well, I pretty much agree with Prokofy's statement. I thought it was a dead on chracterization what I have seen in There and SL. I don't really care to debate this topic with you because I don't wish for force my morality and personal beliefs on others, and with all due respect it isn't a topic woth my time or even the effort it took to type this.

I have no stature in the SL community, I didnt even make the famous people list :D and I usually spend less than an hour a week in SL. Forums are not SL.

Ha!

Aw, c'mon ... consider:
(a) Publicity for my products
(b) Audience this could draw
(c) No one can beat my pistols in a duel!

I agree. My av isn't musclebound, he's lean. The caricatures I see make me laugh. :) Give me good old fashioned "realism".

Well since none of us are realy the AV's we look like I would think racism would not exist here. Unfortunatly as long as ppl do not have a sence of humor it will exist everywhere.

Parody, right.

It is funny how when some people want to hurt others it is all fun and games. But when they are want to defend themselves, they bring up real life and all thier personal issues as justification for being insensitive.

With respect, I have to say that your last sentence represents a dangerous argument, Catherine, because it is one that is used often by racists. They come out with a lot of racist abuse, and when the recipient of this becomes offended, they then accuse them of not having a sense of humour.

And also it is not entirely true to say that our avs don't look like us. I am white, and so is my av. The avs are designed to express racial differences, and I imagine it is probably quite rare for a person's av, if it is human, to be different from their real life racial group. With the possible exception of black Americans, who might find it expedient to adopt white plumage in order to avoid hassle. :(

I knew a female Marine who once told me that all female Marines were either lesbians or sluts. Of course I asked which category she fell under. Of course she said, "neither." Well, what is it? Are you a guy or a bored housewife on the verge of divorce willing to do anything for attention? Or are you the one exception?

Interesting how our perceptions and preconcieved notions place people into categories just by looking at them. Even more astounding is how this can be done by viewing what is essentially a cartoon character.

This does not mean that racism and discrimination should be tolerated. It should not matter whether a person is dressed a certain way or if they display objects, if it is deemed to be racist or discriminatory it or they should be removed. This does not require player run government or a Bill of Rights. It is a simple matter of LL making the determination and dealing with it
