i'm sorry man, i didn't know you had already gone over the metallica thing before... i commonly use them as a reference and i didn't know it would strike that chord with you! i can see how what i said could have been taken the wrong way now.

I bought a lovely blouse the other day, but it had something really dumb emblazoned across the chest. So I was happy that I was allowed to change (and I suppose copy) the texture.

Now I own a shirt that is frankly easily reverse engineered - there are only a few sliders - and contains MY texture (well, one that I found someplace on the net). Should I feel anything but joy when I wear it in public? Or when I start cranking off copies for sale?

By the way, would it be good enough if every finished article of clothing had a non-removable tag in the collar stating the original creator of the complete item?

Kathy,
That's where the sticky issue lies. Though I'd say the ideal solution would be to contact the original author and ask if they have a copy of the texture without whatever's on the front that you can buy off them.
When I first made my devil wings, I had some people buying them and one guy turned them into small hand/feet fins and I thought that was great. So that was my reasoning for not making the wings nocopy/nomodify.
A few weeks ago, I found someone reselling those same wings (at a markup even). They were very polite and understanding when I asked them to take them down.
But the problem is if you trust everyone, someone will be along to take advantage of that trust.
I don't think tags are enough. I KNOW what all my stuff looks like, since I made it. But I don't keep track of everyone that buys it (nor do I want to) and I don't want to be the fashion police, seeing if anyone's ripping me or other people off.
While part of the solution is letting people know that it's not right to sell copies of an object, I think coded solutions would be a lot more effective in curbing this long-term. And I fully support a resell tag.

Yes it does ... I understand completely ... was just making sure I wouldn't be breaking any code of ethics by selling off the stuff I don't use anymore.

As for the no copy no modify thing ... I knew you could set objects to this ... so I just assumed you could do the same for clothing & textures ... as I don't work much with clothing and I only sell a few textures ... In which case I agree with everyone that there should be a way for the creator to set no copy no modify on ALL of there creations ... textures & clothing included.

I totally agree that you should have the same options for clothes as for other objects. If you sell someone a pair of pants, you're just selling them THAT pair of pants and not the pants design and an entire pants factory. Of course, people making clothes can still choose to make their clothes free to copy.

As a side note. Is there a market in SL for unique objects? Say you create a nice painting or a luxory sofa, and instead of selling lots and lots of them to anyone willing to pay, you put up one or a limited number for sale (at a much higher price, of course). Once these are sold, you delete the design. (or maybe there are objects like this allready in game that I just don't know about, I'm kind of new at this).

Ok, this s the first time I have ever posted anything in the forums. So please forgive me if I have done something that is not correct.

I too have strong feelings about this matter. Since the only way I have made any moneys in SL is through selling textures. Which are not protected in any way. And are available to be copied, given and sold to others without my knowledge.

I take this stance its ok! Let them and SL will mirror reality again and ideas will be new and fresh. Fashions will evolve and trends started and pass. I t will keep us the creators of these thing working on new things that other don’t have!

And the best of us will rise to the top and the mediocre will stagnate and find something else to do.

Do you really want everyone to be wearing the same clothes you made when you started this game?

Do we really want to be limited to the textures that are here now?

Come on guys this is about our creativity lets show them what we can do! And not worry about what they are going to do with them. If we work hard then they will always just be following us. Give your selves a pat on the back for what you have created and if others copy or use then it are a job well done and you know you are doing a good job. I don’t believe that anyone will copy crap!

I did not intend to stir any ones pot.I only hopped to empower or inspire you all to the greatness that I believe you have!

here's an idea

what do you guys think about this ?? i can see if someone bought an item , clothes or whatever, and they honestly dont like it , what are they to do ? eat the cost ? personally, i dont mind the loss and usually just delete the item, but others may be more "pennywise" than i. do the creators currently offer any kind of an "exchange credit" per say ? maybe give a 30% discount toward their next future purchase.

i dunno but its just a way to kinda persuade the buyer in that case to return to the creator instead of trying to get their money back some other way. hehe Wal-mart seems to have done extremely well with their customer service policies.

anyhow, maybe i am way off base and the idea would never work in the first place, but my aim is to get some heads rolling with some ideas towards a "player-made" solution if the lindens cant get it done fast enough for us.

i think that it would be appropriate to name the people who continue to resell after being asked not to do so. just throwing a name is kinda harsh and may run future good people out of the game.

sincerely,
