I suppose I’m in the Lurker category.

Many of the poll answers fit me…I have nothing to say, Other people say what I am thinking, I fear being flamed, I only post about specific topics, and I do post.

I peruse the forums if not daily a few times a week. If I do post it tends to be in the How To areas. Normally I find someone else has already answered the questions by the time I read them so I don’t post.

As for flames, I don’t so much fear them as just find flame wars a useless waste of time and brings to me an overall negative feeling about the SL community. Debates I love, but it seems the good debates only last maybe two pages before if dissolves into petty name calling. Once a thread turns nasty I quit reading. I’m glad in SL itself I rarely encounter the attitudes that seem prevalent here. It’s like the personal edit feature is suspended in posting, something that I have never understood. I suppose it’s a forum version of road rage, the anonymity making them feel they have permission to rip at whatever is said.

The best day for me was when they moved the General Forum down to the bottom of the list. So at least I can read the Forums with positive attitudes first and feel good about the people in SL and then, if felling brave, I’ll drop down and take a peek in the General to see what is going on.

I'm usually not too worried about sounding stupid or cruel, because I'd sound that way whether I posted once a week or once an hour. So I post, because it gives me something to do.

Out of curiousity, can people who are banned take the poll? If not how do you expect that option to be voted and believe on?

Why post in the forums when you can talk about it *in SL*?
09-15-2005 21:37
I skim the forums pretty much daily for news & interesting stuff, and then *talk* about it with people *in SL*. Same thing with other sites I regularly read; if I find something interesting, rather than post to the forums/thread, I find some of my girlfriends in AIM or irc or whatever and have a chat about it.

(Plus in the forums, nobody can see me flutter my pretty wings!)

Now if I were really consistent, I wouldn't make this post :P

drama, drahma, and more drahhhhhhhhma.

and the fact that most of the threads are just another version of the brainless thread beneath it.

ditto to this:

i, on the other hand, am able to refrain, and only post pointless useless comments now and then.

like this one for instance.

I post and lurk in streaks. Also, my forum time vs. SL time varies wildly, as well as my general internet-to-RL ratio.

Reasons? Surely you jest.

I am relatively new here and have been reading the forums. Seems that its a pretty closed universe of posts and posters with the same messages. BORING. So here I am to make it better. Look out.

If I have something to say which might add to a discussion and hasn't already been said, then I'll post. Sometimes I decide to post a response, but by the time I finish reading the thread I'm frustrated or disenchanted with the entire topic and the manner in which posters have responded to each other.

Not all topics or threads have been terribly productive lately. I try not to be baited into replying to some outrageous posts, or at least those that I feel are obnoxious or ridiculous.

I mostly enjoy reading the forums. Some posters are hilarious! The fourms provide me with insight about what's happening in SL as well as little glimpses into how my fellow SLers think, use SL, and react to others in varying situations.

angel :)
My sentiments exactly (Hi Angel :) ) - I occasionally post in areas I can contribute (be it building, occasional additions to economy, etc.), although for the most part I read the forums for entertainment. As Angel stated, several threads digress so fast - a quick click of the "back" button and on to the next is a very common occurence.

I certainly am glad I never read the forums before joining. SL can continue to blossom as long as people realize that the forum regulars do not reflect all of the population. Sure, I agree that there are some extremely passionate, intelligent, insightful, creative, and provocative personalities here, but the negativity certainly overshadows the positive, wonderful things, people, and experiences that the Real SL has to offer in world.

Though I do post, its for an occasional reason, and also ensure that I in fact add to the discussion in some way and don't troll or whatever it signifies...

The other varying reasons apply -
-- RL/Work insane from time to time.
-- Peruse specific subjects only.
-- I come to SL to relax; If I want to be stressed out about something I'll inquire with the RL family or a vendor or two.

this proves a simple fact. some people just have to post, even when its so pointless, they cant help it, they just have to post.

In Captain Kirk fighting mind control device voice: "Must... not... *tears shirt* ...reply ...must ...fight *tosses head from side to side* ...urges ...the pain.... Aaaaarrrrgggg!"

*clicks submit reply*

*looks at post count*

*Cackles maniacally*

er... oops.

Amen! I'll be under the bed hiding henceforth.

<---Obviously I am now 4 months lurk-free :D

Can I join you?

I lurked for about a month and a half--then found I couldn't keep my big, fat yap closed any longer. :D

It always seems like there's about a few dozen active posters and hundreds of lurkers.

And most of the ones that do post say the same things over and over, don't say anything...really, or nothing worth responding too.

From: Hiro Pendragon
What reason most keeps you from posting?

See above. :o
