I just wanted to thank everyone for their patience while we work to fix the current login situation. And please know that this issue is affecting ALL of us, Residents and Lindens together. I've been unable to log in today as well.

Also, if you get a chance, please give the 1.6.5 preview grid a shot.

http://secondlife.com/downloads/preview.php

The more people who give us feedback about the preview grid, the quicker and more effectively we can implement the 1.6.5 update, and the sooner we can hopefully get rid of some of our growing pains.

As Philip said, these are mostly unexpected growing pains. Nobody has ever created or lived in a world like Second Life before. The old saying "pioneers are always the ones who get arrows in their backs" is very true. But at the same time, after all the arrows are plucked out, it's the pioneers who have the rare opportunity to shape and create a new world.

We're all pioneers here. We're working to keep the arrows at a minimum. We're very sorry for them, and please know we're working hard to not only bandage the wounds but most importantly to prevent them from hitting us in the future.

Take care,
-Pathfinder

I like seeing your note Pathfinder.

Never thought of myself as a pioneer and I wonder if the x will let me slide a couple of payments so help build my fortune in the new world.

Patience I have more of.

One thing to remember, also, is that a preview grid is an excellent chance to upload and check out textures on your avatar. Many clothing makers do this. You get the chance to check the texture out thoroughly in-world withot having to pay out any of your "real" L$s. :)

Oh wow, Beryl, I didn't know that! I've often sat thinking about whether a texture is worth uploading, then finally do it, and find it is blurry or something. I should go to preview and preview-upload all my textures, lol.

Haha, I just logged in to the preview grid to find I have L$0 in my preview account! So I can't upload textures! This makes my previous advice incorrect. *sigh*

What's up with this, Lindens? This is not how it usually is.

I'd just add one MINOR detail, though.

Lindens GET PAID to be on SL, while players PAY to be on SL :-)

Nonethless, I understand that SL is very cutting edge and stuff, and I hope things can get fixed soon, and wish them the best!

Maybe inventory caching could help, local search could also help.

Oh, and if people could use SHIFT or CTRL + select to select multiple items in the inventory to move, copy or delete, it would also help a lot (it's a Prop, too) to clear up clutter. I would organize my inventory more if those would work :-(

Beryl, just beg for some money from someone who has it. I think they'll easily give you a few L$'s if that's just preview money :-)

I asked whenthis happened, and the answer I got was, there were some abuses of some sort (sothing specific mentioned) and Vector had them clear the L$ to stop it.

Hely, Lindenfolk? How about distributing a little L$ for the sake of getting a little play-work done on the preview? Pweeeeze?

There are Residents who make a good chunk of change off of SL, too -- again, there's that term, "Second Life"; it can be as unique as you are an individual. A form of self-expression, including dollars and cents and nonsense. Also, the amount of Basic account holders (like myself) who do pay a one-time initial fee, but past that, they might as well be coasting -- and I can't overgeneralize but there are some Basic Residents making L$ too well above and beyond what they started with, when converted back to US$.

I'm just comforted hearing this solid confirmation in Announcements that Lindens are like rabid dogs around the clock right now.

And yes, Zonax, your features are ones that I would look forward to as well. :)

Yeah, I second this! If I can't check my textures in the main grid, can't I at least check them in preview? I say pooh to this no-preview-grid money thing. :(

Wow, my heart literally bleads. Give us a break. LL have known the growth rate for many months and have not had the ability to address or solve the problem, forcing it to fester and become worse. Months ago we were promised it would be resolved, months later and it still isn't - in fact it's just reaching critical mass.

I'm really sorry that it's affecting the Lindens as well. Maybe now you're taking it seriously after paying it lip service for so many months?

The same login, asset and user server problems after such a length of time? My, how you take your customers seriously. This weekend has been a bit of a water-shed, hasn't it. You need some serious remedial work to get this thing to scale - any maybe somebody should let Philip know that it doesn't currently scale, as he seems to think it does judging by his comments over the months.

I have gone to the test grid but I do not see myself and I can't use appearance mode at all. I was going to do some work in PS because I can't login to SL like all of us. I have tried the test grid about 5 times now and each time I can't see myself and use appearance mode. Is there anything I can do maybe to make it work?? Also I am not the only one that logs into the test grid and can't see their AV.

Ah, happened to me -- it's a known bug, Roseann. Try drag-and-dropping a folder of clothes on yourself and if that doesn't work, relog after that. It should work. Best of hope. :)

Ahh, I actually had to right-click and attach an inventory prim-attachment first to be able to "see" and target myself to drag the folder ONTO me. But yah, do that and you'll be visible. My title bar is still red, whatever that means... (Runs off screaming, "CODE RED! CODE RED!" since he can't login and work on his airship as he planned this weekend.)

Ironic, Pathfinder is pioneering and finding new paths. I love it.

Thanks for the update Path ;)

Moopf, you're being hard on Lindens, though I admit, I can understand why. If I'm right, you're paying some big money (island, land) monthly, and if the login problems were not enough, I've read your Numbakulla island (with the new game) sim kept crashing and crashing, 5-6 times a day. So, yes, you have every right to complain.

I don't know if it's short sightedness or just paced development (I vote on the latter) that, for example, made the new feature 'streaming inventory' without actually thinking of what kind of load that would put on the database.
Well, if they did think of it, some kind of caching could've been implemented on first try.

Another problem is, they tried to fix a previous problem in a small timeframe (slow logins due to inventory loading) but that introduced a much more serious another (load on DB). Also, the easy idea that the 'search runs on the database, and not on the local data' is also silly, though it makes for easier code (you don't have to check if inventory is downloaded partially, just do the search on the servers).

Just a note. I encouraged people to try out the Preview Grid in my initial post, but I've been hearing that a lot of newer Residents are unable to connect because the snapshot of the user database on the Preview Grid was made before they signed up.

I'm currently trying to see if we can update the user database on the Preview Grid ASAP to let newer Residents in.

I'll keep you posted.
