I nominate w3b with a secondary nomination of Terminus. Sentimentally, I like Terminus better because it served as the kernel of the new empire. But w3b is more cutesy technical. Did I just call my entry "cutesy technical?"

I am fond of "Lathe of Heaven"--Ursula LeGuin's novel. Of course, there could be an influx of machinists who are religious zealots--not so good.

Other possibilities: "Deus Ex," "Elementum," or "Animus"

(Cid, I propose "Innieverse" :D)
(Just based on the forums? "Schadenfreude" :D)
(Just based on my experience? "AFK" :D)

Hmm, can't come up with anything less lame than "3Dream" (3D+stream) off the top of my head (guess that's why I'm not in marketing).

Surely a "next version" of Second Life that will require renaming will be when the technology has matured enough to be released as a something akin to a video codec/player.

Metaverse.com is still free, as is secondevie.com (french), and zweitesleben.com (german).

The UK version, secondlife.com is already taken, at least LL registered that one :).

Archipelago.

Pol's are good.

"Terminus" is what Atlanta was called at first, and will be ever thus in my mind.

I always thought "Second Life" was already the perfect name.

But if I had to vote for some new name, I absolutely love Cadroe's.

Yes but it has to be somewhat generic like Internet, so in that regard Metaverse fits perfectly. It describes such a world, not necessarily the same one but the principle, like the Internet which evolved so much from its original idea.'
Well not having read the book that "metaverse" comes from I dont have such an attachment to it.

I dont like it from a purely logical standpoint in that it does not actually describe the place very well. "Metaverse" implies a collection of universes, or an existence after the universe is over, neither of which SecondLife and other online games/worlds are; and something they can never actually be.

It's like saying "futuristic superstupendous transport anything vehicle" instead of "new car."

How about the subverse?
or "Subversia"?
