Request for Names For An Imaginary "Better SL"

I am trying to think of names for an imaginary "next version" of Second Life, produced by the Linden company, that is so much better than what we currently know that the Linden bosses think it needs a new name for marketing purposes.

This imaginary next version would be one that allows everyone to keep their avs, property, etc., and while some folks get nostalgic about the name changing, the overwhelming response to this imaginary new version is that with all the improved new features and better performance, who cares what it is called?

The names I can come up with so far are too lousy to even put in public.

I have a strong leaning towards Ubik because of the powerfully punchy name and the heritage it carries. You can see how closely it relates to SL:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ubik

Throw in current Dickian influence (like Tyrell Corporation, although it was called Rosen in the novel of DADOES) and the fact it's easy to spell, and you have a compelling case—if the name could be wrested from the PKD Estate! ;)

I like Ubik! Also uhmmm, "Bob" is always a nominee.

There were the old rejected SL names back when it was Linden World too, I forget them right now, but they had nice rings to them.

Sureal Life also comes to mind, could keep the SL shortening too.

MetaVerse is very logical for the purpose. I think maybe "MV: the MetaVerse" would be fine for my purposes.

I remember that I read the Philip K. Dick book "Ubik", I probably read it when it first came out in paperback. So old, sigh.

What I was wanting this name for was to put a story in the thread about the demise of Second Life in which the new version of Second Life becomes a tremendous success.

Maybe the folks who make up names here could write their own tale of a fictional super-SL from Linden Research that replaces SL?

Definitely Metaverse. I suspect there will be many metaverses but SL can maybe can copyright this or at least be the first. I wonder if Neal has this copyrighted though?

"Metaverse" seems pretty bad to me.

Would sound like they were more interested in achieving what had already been laid out in an imaginary future than developing their own thing.

Maybe "Esselle Tue" :)

Yes but it has to be somewhat generic like Internet, so in that regard Metaverse fits perfectly. It describes such a world, not necessarily the same one but the principle, like the Internet which evolved so much from its original idea.'

I dunno. What would you call a tech noir dystopia, with uchronian, surreal, corporate, and psuedo-utopian dimensions?

Metaverse? Naw. Not broad enough.

From what I have heard, which is admittedly not from the horse's mouth, LL derives significant inspiration from Snowcrash.

In fact, a copy of Snowcrash, autographed by people at LL, was Silent-Auctioned at SL Relay for Life. (Which is a bit pretentious if you ask me.)

Perhaps a purchase is in order. Cyan Worlds' work (and name) just fits on so many levels.

And if you don't get the reference, shame on you.

Sure, I'll go with Ubik -- it's one of my favorite PK Dick novels, although the nameless VR system in A Maze Of Death was somewhat closer to a nextgen SL.

Just me, but if we're talking science fiction references to SL, it struck me early on as a cross between Greg Egan's Permutation City and Michael Moorcock's An Alien Heat.

But re a new, improved SL? How about Phoenix? To be honest, I don't care what it's called so long as it's distributed.

"ThreeDeeChat" SUCKS!

"ChatThreeDee" ROCKS!

I may have that backwards, I just woke up, I barely know my own name at the moment.

I have posted my entry in the end of Second Life story thread.

Archipelago.

Because it reminds me of Neuromancer and it suggests a vast area of independent worlds rather than the current centrally operated one.
