I hate to rain on your FUD parade but SL should be perfectly secure if *you* know what you're doing. Like other people said on that thread, you need to have a secure password, combining letters with numbers and special characters. You should allow windows to autoupdate itself, run a firewall and an antivirus, keep those updated as well.
Do not use Internet Explorer or Outlook, do not open any attachments without scanning them first. Don't download anything from untrustworthy sources. Don't install anything if you don't know what it is.
It's a war out there, and if you're a "non-technical" person, you're unarmed.

Is this the same Merwan who proposed that we should all be using our real identities not to long ago?

We all know that Merwan founded Awakening Avatars many moons ago. However, with that group on the decline, and the rapid increase of Avs in SL, is his influence waning?

Is he even a SL celebrity anymore or has he been replaced by the Anshe Chungs and Prokofy Nevas of the [virtual] world?

Meaning, do his posts elicit any type of reaction at all at LL anymore or is he just another talking head to them?

He wasn't influential enough to make this year's Bergman List /130/58/58933/1.html

Well the way I see it is it was moved because it was a Notice. She wanted people to be aware of what happened. I do think however, that Notices and Well Wishes should be 2 SEPARATE forum topics. I do not think that a Notice like the one mentioned should be mixed in with Well Wishes...doesn't make much sense. It's like... Hijacked Acct BEWARE! and then Happy Birthday So and So!!


Separating them out would be a better idea...

Agreed - the original post I also took to mean as a notice to everyone to be careful. However, the topic of password security is a good one to be aware of. Perhaps it might make sense to start a new thread asking that question?

Well we could just make this thread about security. Has anyone else been hacked to that extent? Has anyone experienced any kind of funny business with their account?

I guess I feel pretty safe because I'm on a Mac. But I think today I will change all of my passwords just to be careful.

What does everyone else do to be secure?

Surely that is not what Notices and Well-Wishes is about? Good heavens, I would expect to find in there notices of people's birthdays and suchlike, not a thread which claims that someone's security was badly compromised, and which seems to imply that the problem lay at the Linden's end?

While I appreciated the humour in moving it to Notices and Well-Wishes, I cannot believe that anybody could think it belongs there.

I know you are new at this whole wry, badass thing, but it is lame-o!

I thought it was moved because it was about discussing a specific incident about a specific person and saying "hi, this is what happened to me". I think if it was more of a general, "has this happened to you and what can be done to stop this", it would have stayed in the general category.
