Yup you just did, cus I was willing to let it ride.

Note to self: comparisons to Hitler do not qualify as stirring up trouble.

Let me get this straight. Comparing me to Hitler was you letting it ride? What do you compare people to when you don't let it ride? I mean in the realm of reactionary comparisons, I think you pegged the needle. :D

I suffer from Lupas and sometimes shit doesn't connect for me as easily as it does for you. So now that you know don't pitty me, just understand that we are not all as fucking perfect as you are.
OK. Serious face is on.

I apologize. I am being a bit insensitive with the goal of having some fun in the forums. (I don't even know what the topic of this thread is.) I'll hop out of the thread now and promise to be a little more understanding in the future.

And what are you doing right now Nolan?

Making soup. I am the Soup Nazi. I don't let anyone else have any. It's an old, German, family recipe - Chicken Knoedel.

Elvis left the fucking building in the middle of page 2.

Sorry, Cybin. Even though I disagreed with you in parts, I enjoyed the exchange of views on the first two pages.

See ya next time.

:(

i started this thread with the intent of sharing my view on current developments within SL, this thread has long since sloughed that off.

i officially declare this thread dead.

i'm sorry to anybody who was offended, i never meant for this thread to go sour.

Coco, there was never anything said that was meant to belittle you in any way. i value the opinions of each and every person.. which you are, therefore, your opinions count just as much as anyone else. there was no "set-up" and i'm truly sorry you feel that way.

everyone else, i'm glad to see the drama that started to form was curbed nicely and everone has started to get along again.

but when all is said and done, this thread has been derailed to the point of no return.

i stick by my vision though.. SL can someday become a world that is part internet, part game, part whatever anyone wants it to be. i don't think it should be the internet, but i think it can serve the purposes the internet serves while becoming much, much more.

we are Charlie, we have the Golden Ticket and we've given back the Everlasting Gobstopper.. and we have the keys, albeit to our side of the blurry line, but we still have them.

-

and thank you to those who took me seriously and engaged in thoughtful debate. it has been appreciated.

I agree with this strongly. It's a shame that there is a contingent that just can't accept that SL is not the same thing for others as it is for themselves.

and finally..

if any Lindens are reading this thread, i would like to respectfully request it be locked due to losing it's way. it no longer will serve it's intended purpose and has no need to exist any further.

thank you.

Thank you, Cybin. I take you at your word for that, and possibly I get mixed up sometimes with exactly who says what and is doing what. A little less horsing around maybe would be good sometimes, since that is very hard to understand online, especially if you don't know who's who. Having said that, I can understand why someone 32 weeks along might be feeling like having a little fun.

again, Philip sees what we've all been postulating for the past year.. becoming "more like the internet".

I think you got it backwards. Most residents have been postulating what Philip has been thinking since he read Snow Crash.

Except for a few lucky folks who also have come to the vision of the Metaverse. :) I admit I was blessed with reading Snow Crash in 2000, and I haven't looked back.

So is SL now the Reality. Shall we treat it as such from now on?

Playing obtuse isn't your forte. Big shock, LL is a corporation and corporations have to make more money than they spend to stay in business. Tootz, if that's a surprise to you, maybe you should log off before you get hurt.

To acknowledge reality (see above) is not the same thing as saying it is more or less important than the one you're carrying in your head. But try to keep it in perspective -- if LL doesn't make money and make it consistantly, you don't get to play their product.

So, yeah, to the extent you claim to want to be here and enjoy their product, it is in your own best interest (meeting that end) that LL be profitable.

You don't seem to have issue with 'filthy commercialism' when you can gain enjoyment and benefit from it, or when someone else is picking up the slack between what you're paying and what it takes to keep the lights on.... only when it might actually require you to consider someone else's interests along with your own.... you know... communal interest.

But let LL take steps to find the revenue that you and others think you shouldn't be required to pay (e.g., inventory tier, reasonable fees for higher than average uses of the metaverse, etc.) and all you can do is roll your eyes and complain that they're selling out to commercial interests.

Oh irony.

It realy concerns me when any player suggests for any reason that another play leave sl. I think that would hurt their bottom line.

I dont think I need to worry about LL picking up the slack to keep the lights on. It's their company after all. Unless of course I worked for them; which I don't. I find what is happening lately no different than any other business I pay money to. I pay for a service I expect service. They send me a message my rates are going up; I ask what for? If the reason is not justifiable I cancel the service. I however do not worry if their lights are still on. If the reason is justifiable I pay the increase, I keep the service.

God forbid I should say "no I don't want to pay you anymore money" Do you happily pay each and every bill that comes in without looking at your statements? I don't.

There would still have to be a solid community to have a communal interest. That community spirt ploy has been sucked dry by the lack of community. Especialy in these very forums.

First - forgive the tone of the previous. It was late, I was feeling snarky, and that came off terser than intended.

As for the rest -- people have different expectations and their tolerance for deviation from them vary as well. Companies rarely justify their actions to their customers unless they find there is no other way to keep them.

There is a very solid community in SL. There are alss various fringe elements who feel disenfranchised. The fringe element tends to insure all the drahma (thanks, Quirk!) and in-fighting, while the rest of the place tries to progress in spite of it. Who sits where in the process varies, and depends upon what their 'buttons' are... all of which is usual and normal and expected.

Open acceptance of all ideas will never happen, but not because "There's no community"... rather, because there is... and every social grouping will naturally resist changes that are not beneficial to the group as a whole. Seperatist movements are among that number.
