http://www.sluniverse.com/pics/pic.aspx?id=24900 The American Cancer Society is supporting Second Life residents in raising awareness and support in the fight against cancer! On August 27th and 28th (this weekend!), prepare to walk your avatar in the very first virtual Relay For Life. One hundred percent, completely supported by the Society, the SL Relay For Life will bring the experience of a traditional Relay to our diverse, world-wide community and allow every single person to participate in an event bearing 20 years of history. If you've participated in a real-world Relay For Life, you might notice both similarities and differences between the real and the virtual version that we're putting together for you here. Although a traditional Relay For Life is a team-based event, the Second Life Relay is not. There's no need to commit your entire weekend to us. Though if you want to, that's great too! We're asking that every avatar swing by, walk a few laps, learn about the American Cancer Society and fighting cancer. We will play a few games and hope that everyone will graciously donate a few dollars to the Society so that it can continue to do great things for cancer research, education, advocacy, and service. A number of activities will be available to entertain your restless little hearts while you're exploring the ‘Hopeful’ vehicle sims. There will be a Miss Relay for Life pageant, scavenger hunts, sailboat racing and a silent auction with prizes to win. Look for a schedule of events at the Relay site, in the vehicle sims. Luminaria Lightinghttp://www.sluniverse.com/pics/pic.aspx?id=25428 Help us fire up the vehicle sims by donating a few dollars to light a luminary or two. Our goal is to have the entire track lined with lighted luminaries. It will be a beautiful sight to behold when the sun sets on the Relay For Life. The amount you donate has an effect on the color of the luminary. Building/Fundraising Contesthttp://www.sluniverse.com/pics/pic.aspx?id=25429&sort=PictureID+desc Put your building and fundraising skills to the test and you could win one of the ten pewter Second Life pendants we have to give away, or a signed print of your choosing from Robin Wood! In a real-world Relay For Life, team members set up camp and prepare for a long night on the track. They pitch tents and they often come up with gimmicks to try and raise additional funds from participants at the last minute. So, to keep with the tradition, that's exactly what we're going to do. When you visit the vehicle sims, you'll see along the track many platforms sticking out of the side. These platforms are waiting for you! Participants will do the following: 1. Reply to this thread and state your interest in participating in the campsite contest. This is going to reserve you one of our limited number of platforms. 2. On your reserved platform, you'll build your campsite. Make it creative and keep it under 200 prims. 3. *Optional* - Come up with your own gimmick to raise money for the American Cancer Society from your campsite. If you're interested in this portion of the contest, we'll place a donation kiosk at your campsite and track the money donated into it. We ask that you not accept any donations directly, but to use only the kiosk we give you. Your gimmick could be anything, really. Perhaps for a minimum donation, for example, you might tell a joke, or give away something that you've made. You decide on your gimmick. We'll award prizes for the following: - Most money raised at campsite. - Most original gimmick. - Most thought-provoking campsite. - Funniest campsite. - Cutest campsite. Winners for the subjective awards will be chosen by a panel of judges consisting of myself, SNOOPYBrown Zamboni, and RC Mars and will be announced during the awards presentation ceremony on Sunday afternoon. You don't have to be present at the awards ceremony to win. Building will begin on Friday. All campsites must be completed by Saturday afternoon. I haven't explained all that there is in this thread, so come out and experience the event yourself. Send ideas for this or next year's SL Relay for Life to myself, SNOOPYBrown Zamboni, or RC Mars, and if you have any questions, send those to me! Thanks, everyone!

RadioRadio DJs will be donating their time to broadcast continuously throughout the entire event. Stream provided by RadioRadio's owner, Madame Maracas and Ketnar.org This is for a great cause and we're honored to be a part of it! http://deimos.servercave.com:15822/liveI'm not the master orator like Madame so, Maddie, if you read this, please add to it anything I missed.

Sailboat Racing in the big "O"
08-23-2005 15:40
Attention all sailors and landlubbers! We're sailing the big O in "HOPE" (check your map!) as part of the SL Relay For Life event going on this weekend. Everyone is welcome to participate - it doesn't matter if you've never even been in a boat before. All you need is a sense of adventure. The sailing will go on from 4 pm Saturday to 7 am Sunday (yeah, all night long -- 15 hours straight!). These will be the two main sailing activities: - Race against the clock in one of three specially configured Flying Tako sailboats for a chance to win a fabulous prize! (a minimum donation of L$250 is required) - Ride along or take the helm in one of our other regular Flying Takos to help keep the relay going and set a new Second Life sailing record for non-stop sailing! The race course will be right in the middle of all the Relay for Life action, so if you are walking in the main event, why not take a break and enjoy a relaxing sail? Just follow the ramp down to the dock area in Fortuna, where you can walk through a crash course in sailing or hop right into one of the awaiting boats. We've also got an observation platform and benches for spectators If you have questions about the sailing relay, please IM me in-world.

Did you say Scavenger Hunt, Jade?
08-24-2005 16:14
Well, yes, of course you did.
Because that's what I'm going to be running, from 6-7pm SLtime on Saturday, people!
Except it won't be a regular scavenger hunt for objects, really, it'll be more of a scAVenger hunt where you have to track down a few avatars stationed around the grid, telling each a different Seekrit Phrase to get to the NEXT one, and so on, kinda like a spy/explorer kinda thing. Created ESPECIALLY for all you JamesBond/Lara Croft types out there. (And because it gets around my egregious lack of scripting abilities.)
[ And the first person to complete the hunt will get a gorgeous two-story beach house designed by Slumber Garden, with the runners-up receiving a fine JC Kilian Barbecue Grill, and all participants walking away with a Lava Lamp to add a little gooey kinetic joy (no, not *that* kind, yeeesh) to their inventories. ]
So find me near the Relay route right before 6pm, and be ready to get your walking-flying-TPing-mapchecking-seekritphraseremembering .... um ...ON!

Practice sailing at the big "O"
08-26-2005 10:06
If anyone wants to get in some practice laps around the big "O" there are two public sailboats at the little dock next to the big dock: Fortuna (67,237). They have identical setups to the ones we're using for the RFL contest, but will not trigger the timers -- so have a stopwatch handy. They are free to use, and should return to the dock when you stand up. If you have any problems, let me know in-world.

If you haven't reserved your campsite, there's still time! I'm wrapping the platforms around to the south. The buildings are beautiful. Just to recap, Linden Lab has donated 10 pewter SL pendants like the one worn by the guy in this pic. We'll be giving away half of these to the campsite construction contest winners. Please get your campsites up by tomorrow afternoon. We'll be judging early and presenting awards at the end.

I got a kiss from Pendari, and now she worships me.... I have a T-Shirt that says so to prove it! Amazing place. I just finished my walk and made an album of it. Great place, great idea, great fun. Don't miss it. I counted precisely ten campsites left. Looks like they're going fast.

I just checked out the Relay for Life build today... it's really impressive. I love the multi-tier feel to it, the boat race is fun, the dance floor looks cool ... lots of people around, too. I'm also impressed with the auction... that ought to be good.
Make sure you stop there for a while tonight or tomorrow morning!

My niece died of a malignant brain tumor when she was 15 months old. My sister and one of my best friends were diagnosed with Uteran and Cervical cancer within 1 month of each other. And my mother succumbed to cancer within 4 months of being diagnosed with it, less than 2 years ago. Relay for Life, which I attended for most of the evening tonight, is a shining spot in SL history for me. The generosity, the energy, and the genuine care that has gone into it from so many SL residents is truly great to see. It's inspiring, and extremely touching. To Jade Lily, to Randy Moss, to all who donated prizes, DJ'd, set up camps, and donated anything from $1 up to the highest reaches, lit luminaries, and all the other ways to participate in this very important event... Thank you, thank you, thank you.
