Here is a chart of where SL ranks in relation to other MMORPG games with populations under 120,000 people.

That's a pretty chart. Which one's SL? What are the other ones, for that matter?

The chart is divided into six-month intervals. The last column should represent Jul-04 through Dec-04. _____________________

Taken from The last paragraph on pg. 16 of Cory Ondrejka's paper "Changing Realities: User Creation, Communication, and Innovation in Digital Worlds :
"User-created content takes the idea of leveraging player opinions a step further by allowing them to effectively prototype new ideas and features. Developers can then measure which new concepts most improve the products and incorporate them into the game in future patches." |

Silly me... I didn't realize the chart was wider than my screen. The legend with all the names was off the right side.

I compiled a neat little graph showing SL's population over time.
A brief summation: Top Graph: Black - Growth Per Month Gray - Growth per Day (magnified 13x) White Notch - % Growth compared to existing population Bottom Graph: Black - Total Population per Month Gray - Total Population per Day Some notes on statistical accuracy - This graph is of all users, trial users included. It is not representitive of users who leave or do not continue playing. The sample size is 29,266 users, which, according to the number of members of the forums, represents 23.6% of total accounts created. ![]() -Adam _____________________

Kinda look like Disco Stu's chart.
Very interisting, and good news for SL! _____________________

I'd find it hard to believe that SL has 123,000 members. Lets just say SL has been growing for 24/months since it began. It would have to average over 5,000 new users a month since 2003 to be anywhere near 123,000 members. And the best numbers I've seen have been "maybe" 100/users a month at best, in the last 6 months.
I'd have to say SL is in the 15,000 - 20,000 range. |

A few days ago Philip dropped in on the Welcome Area, and in the conversation that followed, he stated that the current SL population was approaching 20,000, so your estimate was fairly accurate. _____________________

Teeny: Adam said "I compiled a neat little graph showing SL's population over time. " I donno how else to read that other than Adam saying 123,000 is SL's population. He also says that 29,266 accounts are known, which doesn't make sense if Philip said we are justing getting to 20,000. Maybe I'm reading something incorrectly, where are the 123,000 accounts coming from if SL only has around 20,000 members? Even if you include accounts which have been cancelled, you still won't come close to 123,000. |

mmm... might have to try eve online, looks more fun that WoW EVE Online is not a MMOG, it's a multiplayer screensaver. Try Vendetta Online instead. BTW I don't see it on the chart even though it's been growing slowly but steadily since the release last October. _____________________

There's a ton of those. ![]() LF _____________________

Bottom of the forums page 'Show all members'. You will find there are around 123,000 accounts (and a big list of names to prove it). Philip was only including active, paid accounts in his list, whereas I have some inactive/unpaid/trial accounts in that list as well. Edit: The latest forum change hid the link, but it can still be accessed. http://forums.secondlife.com/memberlist.php? -Adam _____________________

They aren't adding to the growth of SL. Just like Wall Street counting Revenue of a company and painting a rosy picture, yet they might be unprofitable. Paying Accounts should be the only Counted Accounts.. |

If you continued reading past the first sentence, you'd see that philip only counts active, paying accounts. LF _____________________

My question was to Adam who counted Trial accounts and got 123,000 members as detailed in his graph. If you listened before you spoke, the recepient of the question would have been obvious. |
