The camera is in a mature sim? I just saw a cute young thing with no pants. Someone should pass me a few L$ so I don't notify Fark and /.

I cannot see it on my Mac. I am ethically opposed to Microsoft software or hardware on ethical grounds, so I do not have it installed. (Imagine that, me opposed to something on ethical grounds. ;))

However, I realize that a single person's choice is not a sufficient argument for changing the format of a video stream, so I'll provide a technical one. Quicktime's new state-of the-art video codec H.264 delivers stunning quality at remarkably low data rates. Ratified as part of the MPEG-4 standard (MPEG-4 Part 10), this ultra-efficient technology gives excellent results across a broad range of bandwidths, from 3G for mobile devices to iChat AV for video conferencing to HD for broadcast and DVD. (Granted, I don't know if it's feasible to record a stream from SL and have it converted to H.264 on the fly but let's not let technical realities stand in the way of an otherwise damn good point.)

I also figured a progressive technical company from California developing multiplatform software would inherently favor such a technology. I just wanted to remind them of what they already know.

I should at this point, point out that Quicktime still lacks a client on Linux, whereas there is WMP9 support in Mplayer. And that quicktime, when installed on a Windows machine completely fubar's it.

No-pants action aside, the possibilities here are very interesting. Multiple cameras moved by internet consensus or assigned to cover specific events or locations, flying around, zooming, etc. Quality is ok over 1M link.

It's really funny to see avatars acting just like RL people when they realize they're on camera. Although the no-pants (now wiggly-butt) girl would probably have been pixellated. - well, extra pixellated.

MPlayer supports H.264 in QuickTime containers.

Also, why would you blame the QuickTime install for the problems given what it's trying to install into. That's like saying a diamond ring is fault because it won't fit on a pig's foot. ;)

Bummer looks like it broke, I've got audio but a still image instead of video.

[edit]

Never mind he's back and in god mode according to the little popup I saw.

I for one welcome our new video overlords.

Hello All,

I wanted to agree with those who said that live video feed from the celebration site was absolutely HYSTERICAL! It was 100% exactly like when people at a sporting event and such think the camera is on them. I do not think I have laughed so hard outloud since I joined this world. The "HI MOM" sign was classic.

A Side Bar: Early this morning when there were no events taking place I played around with all the options in game. I swear I saw a feature that lets you record SL video and save it to your hard drive? Am I correct in that? If so are their av's making movies or commercials for their products or anything of that nature?

Congrats on the 2 years SL. You had me hooked after 2 days and I hope to be around to celebrate your 4th Birthday!

Its funny seeing all those dorks standing as close as they can to the camera, doing anything possible to get attention. How bout something cool eh? mabye a bulldozer coming from the right and sweeping them away now that would be nice.

by the way the chicken song is old after the 500th time.

Hey I'm in there! :D

I like Video Linden, but abuse was pretty bad when no Linden was around to monitor it. Such as annoying replaying of sound clips and purposely blocking of the camera.

Suggestions, since they asked:

- A mute button, Right click menu isn't apparent to everyone. Perhaps pause etc as well.

- "How Many Are Viewing" would be interesting to see as well.

- "Location" of where Video Linden currently is (or not if you want to cut down on potential camera abuse) with direct secondlife:// linking.

- Special event list like "Video Linden will be at the Town Hall at 3 PM Tune in and watch it live!"

With all that's in SL, is this the best they can video? People showing off in front of the camera - its very boring.
