Why Windows Media Player? Wouldn't Quicktime with H.264 have been better?

~Ulrika~

Something to consider for the future, yes.

The reason we went with Windows Media 9 was non-conspiratorial; we do not necessarily think Windows Media is better than Quicktime. :)

Why thank you for the reply.

I'm thrilled with the concept of video streaming and look forward to viewing it when it goes Quicktime! (I am opposed to Microsoft products for ethical reasons.) Great idea. :D

Ah so push the Mac technology that happens to be on Windows instead of the Windows technology that happens to also be on the Mac. The format that they chose happens to do with the fact that they are using live streaming from the game. As you can see it on the Mac as well, what is the problem? Quicktime is no more of a "standard" than Windows Media.

I cannot see it on my Mac. I am ethically opposed to Microsoft software or hardware on ethical grounds, so I do not have it installed. (Imagine that, me opposed to something on ethical grounds. ;))

However, I realize that a single person's choice is not a sufficient argument for changing the format of a video stream, so I'll provide a technical one. Quicktime's new state-of the-art video codec H.264 delivers stunning quality at remarkably low data rates. Ratified as part of the MPEG-4 standard (MPEG-4 Part 10), this ultra-efficient technology gives excellent results across a broad range of bandwidths, from 3G for mobile devices to iChat AV for video conferencing to HD for broadcast and DVD. (Granted, I don't know if it's feasible to record a stream from SL and have it converted to H.264 on the fly but let's not let technical realities stand in the way of an otherwise damn good point.)

I also figured a progressive technical company from California developing multiplatform software would inherently favor such a technology. I just wanted to remind them of what they already know.

A suggestion - volume slider
06-23-2005 14:29
This is very cool, not sure if it is the same on all browsers but I would like to see a volume slider in the video player. I am using Mozilla Firefox. I can right mouse click and there is a way to mute the audio - but to just turn it down I have to right mouse click, choose "volume", choose "down" (here the volume drops a slight increment) then repeat the process numerous times to get the volume down. A volume slider would be great :-)

This is a super cool way to show off SL - congrats!

I'd guess that its in windows media because it's so easy to use Windows Media Encoder to stream a portion of a persons screen.

It's something in the order of 7 clicks to setup.

I dont know of any products that do the same with Quicktime.

I viewed the source of the page and got this url:

mms://philiplinden.serverroom.us/philiplinden

If you open that in Windows Media player (atleast on my OS X based Desktop) You can adjust the volume any way you like.

And where exactly is the option to stream your desktop inn QuickTime Broadcaster?

I've got it open here as I've used it for webcasting local radio stations and while I can stream my firewire video capture hardware and my audio ports there does not appear to be a comperable feature to the ability Windows Media Encoder has to stream a desktop.

I suppose with special hardware and a second computer I could put video out to svideo and then capture it with my capture hardware but that woulnt be as nice as the microsoft solution.

That depends on what your definition of nice is -- a codec with a fraction of the bandwidth for the same quality or an easy setup (not admitting that there isn't something out there somewhere). Sounds like the classic Apple-Windows quality-accessibility tradeoff. :)

Ahh well if its a quality-accessibility tradeoff I'd go with the accessibility myself.

It's more important to reach the largest audience possible than to provide the best looking streams out there where I work.

I looked at your second link and I'd still go with the Windows Media encoder over a piece of shareware with little detail about its function and Quicktime encoder.

In a perfect world streams would be available in Quicktime and Windows Media both, Since it's not a perfect world I think Linden's doing well with their solution and they are able to reach a larger audience than they would if they used H.264 which only recently became available for windows.

So streaming video AV porn is only a hop skip and a jump away!.. or is that a sit, edit, anim away?

OK can't look at it from work. :( Can we get a mute feature. I wnet to turn it on and WHAM half my office heard music before I close the window. Before anyone asks NO I can't mute my self computer side due to work reasons. Sounds great though and I can't wait to get home and watch the video stream just to see it.

I always choose quality over that which the masses flock to (all the better if they're the same thing). It's just a matter of prinicple.

I'm sorry. I didn't want you to assume that I was an expert putting out the best software I could find. I'm quite ignorant on the subject and hoped that it would inspire you to find a solution yourself. I found those links at the top of my Google search. I'll post something to the Mac forum and see if it turns up a better solution.

In a perfect world the Linden's would have been streaming H.264, encouraging folks to download the latest QuickTime client, which is required anyway to see streaming media in world. :)
