I'd prefer that linden spent their time on enhancing particle effects so we can do our own weather.

whatever happened i hope there'd be an alt-N for weather.

Please, no more new features until the existing bugs are at least marginally fixed!

Weather

I'd love some kind of weather - the constant perfect sunny weather gets boring after a while. It doesn't necessarily have to be zip code related, maybe just SL related like the day and night in SL. A rain shower with thunder and lightening, some fog over the water would give it a nice feeling of reality. I was sorry when they took the waves off the ocean and the motion out of water with this last upgrade. Its subtleties like that that really contribute to the ambience.

Does this only pertain to your own property?
Cause Ihave found that weather.. even clouds seem to increase lag. |

Blaze, you can do weather in SL now to a degree.
Zuzi, Concur, toggable feature for weather would be nice. Stig, LL can do both bugs AND features at the same time, they're multi-talented like that! And I personaly am sick of bug-only major updates, they're boring and leave SL being stagnent when it needs alot of additions, not just bug features. Plus, LL can do BOTH. Snow banks and such I'd figure would just be particle like effects that wouldn't count toward anything. I personaly would love weather, as long as it doesn't go through buildings, we already have water and clouds that do this, and it sucks. The current weather system could use a update. _____________________

Thunderstorms would be wonderful, particularly if they moved from sim to sim.

What about a few sims with weather events, etc. that we could visit....
but we wouldn't want to live there? Perhaps an island chain or some atolls called Los Tormentas, or something..? |

Yes to weather -- and seasons!
04-23-2005 18:22
I vote for weather. (Well, ok, I *didn't* vote for it, because I was out of votes and it seems to be doing just fine without me. But I support it, anyway.) The problem of keeping precipitation out of houses needs to be solved, but that shouldn't be all that hard. It would be a new option for particles, like gravity and affect by wind. It would be "blocked by solid" or something. Particles would just stop when they encounter an object, and then remain there for their lifetime.
I'd also like to see seasons, perhaps running about 3x realworld speed. Possibly weather/seasons should only be enabled on a sim-by-sim basis, like there are snow sims, tropical, etc. I'd willingly buy land in a "Seasonal" sim and accept a bit of lag to be able to have rain and flowers in spring, thunderstorms in summer, fog and changing leaves in the fall, and snow in the winter. I know it would cause a bit of lag as textures all over the sim need to be changed and particles need to be generated. But Khamon Fate would do a brisk business in plants, I bet-- especially if there were llGetSeason() and possibly llGetWeather() to automate the behavior of the plants. ![]() However, I don't want it to go by zip code. I think that would be too narrow based on user, and I like SL to be a bit different from RL. (I live in New England -- I like changing seasons, but I'd like winter to be a bit shorter in SL than it is here. )I think LL should get some stability issues fixed first, but after that, this would be a great addition. neko _____________________

Could a more realistic night sky be tacked on to this proposal?
05-04-2005 20:08
Lordfly raised the issue of the night sky (lack of fixed stars, etc) once again in this thread. This reminded me of an older thread about phasing the Moon. Could it be considered in the spirit of a more realistic weather system to provide a more realistic night sky?

I offered the Zip code thing as a Sim owner only idea. there would be no need for it on main land. your neighbor to the left is having a snow storm while your neighbor on the right is in the middle of death valley..... i dont think so.
now as far a sim owners are conserned; Thier Sim, Thier weather (if they so chose that is.) |

I'd love to see weather! For the time being though, just some enhancements to the particle system would go a long ways. I've been trying to come up with some serious cloudage since 1.0!
What I'd really like to see now is a way of upgrading the panorama. Being able to see clouds and thunderstorms stretching off towards the horizon - even if it never actually rains - would do wonders for the visual feel of the grid. _____________________

There's sporadic rain in parts of Numbakulla that Ratt Foo created - it also makes puddles on the floor when it starts to rain.

yes great idea

yes weather on land would be great, esp if u culd vary with each parcel across ur sim and have weather changeable. i already have snow in one winter sim. and would love to add rain. and variable weather in my natural home sims.. I often spend ages just looking at amazing storms and rain effects in Neocron, and wish we could have that in SL..

Would Love to see this Happen. Honestly I am Tired of sunny days day in and day out..how about something like a world event Like a hurcannie is moving across the land or something you could do whole Weather systems...We should also have some kind of waves were the water meets the costal sims...also could have Lunar Eclipise's and moon phase's (cuase we know they can mess with that *remembers St patty's day,Val. Day)

I'd love this idea too, but I think it needs moderation. First off, weather would look bloody wonky if each landowner could set the weather. You'd be sitting in perfect sunshine, and only a few meters away your neighbor could be suffering through a thunderstorm. Secondly, I think the snowdrifts and whatnot might be going a bit into the extreme. I suggest just particle effects of falling precipitation. Also, one thing I havent seen too much discussion on is the realtime effect. This might affect day night cycles, but I dont mind.
The best thing right now would to be to do it in stages. First, maybe some cloud effects. Darkening with thunderclouds, getting overcast with snow and general rain. Maybe sound and light effects as well. Once particles are fixed so that buildings can be set so that particles will not pass through them, then the precipitation can be added. One thing that definitely can be done is the wind effect with the trees. It's already in, so all that would need to be changed is the tree swaying reaction to local weather. |

Or even the abilty to plug a zip code into your land and have the weather or that sim fallow the weather of that zip code. OMG, one of the coolest ideas I've heard in a while. |

Microsoft Flight Simulator does that already; real time weather, wind speed and direction, clouds etc. I am all for weather if it has some very basic issues eliminated: 1. The ability to block the weather with prims. Rain falls, I want the roof to stop it; snow doesn't come into my house. Right now they can't even keep the fog out of people's houses in the snow sims. 2. Since local lighting absolutely blows there has to be a way of turning on the lights like we can with the debug menu now. If I am forced to endure 300minutes of darkness no matter what, I will quit this game, period. I do not want clouds darkening my veiw without the ability to turn them off either. 3. Weather must not significantly affect the player's experience nor diminish sim resourses. You don't want your av to freeze when a thunderstorm rolls in nor scripts not run when it snows.

User created weather

I'm rather enjoying the user created rain in the Welcome Area.
Rain is very nice when it's not cold or wet. |

I'm all for minor graphical joy, but I see this as either an afterthought or as with video in SL.. they give the project to a new developer to work on...
