From: Seth Kanahoe Olmy, are you asking about classes specifically for SL situations? Or sort of an entertaining, liberal arts approach?
Just clarifying. Anything you would want to teach in SL. If I could figure out how to teach cooking in SL, I'd do that! I want to chime in to support Jase Byrne's plug for teaching at the Touchstone fair. They have a really nice stage area that is great for teaching classes, and it's nice to be in that environment. When the fair is over, I'm hoping to work with Touchstone to set up some classrooms in various places, so people will have nice places to teach. But that is a topic for another thread...

Physics/Chemistry/Meterology/Maths - yeh i know *yawn* but it's where my qualifications are. Would be cool if there was a way of teaching musical instruments via SL. I love the guitar, although I haven't played for a while. Maybe I could teach you americans how to play Rugby

Texturing. Specifically, what UVs are and how to get around some of the limitations imposed by them. (For instance, compensating for the texture warping you get on cubes when you reduce the top size.) Also, how to make effective texrures using Photoshop, including how to make tileable textures. Some of this is going up on my site, as tutorials. But I think it would be nice to teach in-world, too, so I can answer questions as they come up.

These are some great ideas for classes in SL! I've taken over the reigns for managing class support and developing some of the in world education programs. Please let me know if you would like to teach any of these classes and I would be happy to help. We currently offer $500L per approved class. If you have suggestions or ideas to improve the education program, feel free to email me directly at jesse@lindenlab.com or contact me in world.

From: Squagmire Stravinsky I currently teach scripting. But If I had the time to teach anything I want, It wouldd have to be Artificial Inteligence. Semi-Intelligent Problem solving scripts.
I've had the idea to create little self evolving bot in SL for a while now, and I think it could be both a cool experriment of SL's abilities, and a great idea for a class in SL. Ditto... Plus I'd fund you to create the "little self evolving bot."

I love the idea of teaching non-SL things in SL.
Love the idea of teaching film editing. Great use of inworld video! You could also teach film analysis and appreciation, where the whole class watches the same movie at the same time.
And teaching astronomy...very cool. For a while I wanted to be a Cosmologist, and I've always dreamed of having a Planetarium in SL. Like in the attached pic below!

Scripting (maybe with a tutor) How to set up a Media Streaming Server or program (music and video) Paint Shop Pro tips

From: StoneSelf Karuna cool but what classes would you teach? Cosmology is more about the physics of Astronomy than the mechanics. So I'd love to teach something like "the History of the Universe" starting at the Big Bang and explaining how planetary and stellar bodies are formed, how all the elements are created, and of course how cool things like black holes and neutron stars work.

Maybe a practical astronomer with scripting skills is reading and may have some ideas? *crosses fingers*

How to organize your inventory - a class many could benefit from regardless of level of creativity, ability to build, or script.

<.< >.> I dunno.. I couldn't really teach much. But I'd be most assuredly interested in Basic Scripting type classes, as I'm currently afraid of LSL. It's got so many symbols! (Can you all tell I'm not a programmer? Heh.)

does anyone have a good outline for teaching the basics of building?
i've had some people come by to customize their own bears, and they've need a basic course on making prims, coloring prims, linking and unlinking.
an outline on rotations and cutting would also be appreciated.
could you include time estimates to go through the material?
thanks

When I think of an idea for a class I write down on a notecard everything I would type if I were explaining the subject to a single person. After editing the notecard to my liking I put it in a notecard distibutor. I make a sign and set out any objects that might be helpful in the learning of the material.
Right now I have set up 3 such classes on my land, avaliable 24/7 to any who might be interested(basic clothing creation, basic building and basic inventory control).
I think it would be great to have a seperate listing for automated classes. Like an educution button that would list locations that offer 24 hour classes via notecards or whatever method. We could still list class times in events for those times the instructor/mentor is on site assisting those struggling with the material.

thanks I have one "Building 101" I think it needs to be updated tho with the new tools. I would love to give these classes again.
Also I used to have a notecard for organizing inventory. I used to go through that at my SL Basics events on Stage 4.
I remember feniks and Maggie used to give classed in the UI, I think that would be a great one to see offered too.

What I'd teach
05-29-2005 08:29
I'd teach photoshop if I could get enough screen shots in world to do it effectively.
I'd also tech sign language using video.
For now I plan to teach prim basics 101.

Hey, in case you guys haven't heard, I'm creating a University in SL for real-world subjects. To anyone that wants to teach, IM me! I hope to get it back in gear this summer, I've been idle for a while. And astronomy's mine, but I guess I could let others teach some as well
