What class would you teach?

If you were to teach a class in SL, what would you teach?

I don't ask this as a totally hypothetical question, like as a daydream. But like what would you really teach if given the opportunity and the time to prepare, and an interested class? What do you know enough about, or feel passionate enough about, to want to share that knowledge with others? It could be something about SL, or RL, or anything at all really.

Me, I'd teach a class in building for primtionary. I did it before (with Neo Rebus), and it was a lot of fun.

Let's hear some ideas now. What class would you teach?

I currently teach scripting. But If I had the time to teach anything I want, It wouldd have to be Artificial Inteligence. Semi-Intelligent Problem solving scripts.

I've had the idea to create little self evolving bot in SL for a while now, and I think it could be both a cool experriment of SL's abilities, and a great idea for a class in SL.

Prolly something to do with happy stuff in SL... like discovery and exploration, or the stranger side -- explaining bizarre historical facts and SL culture. The wonder of it all.

Aside from SL Basic knowledge, which I would find hard to justify in a classroom setting, probably a terraforming class. I would cover the basics of the tools, working within the limits and the of the lay of the land, being considerate of your neighbors, and simple cave and basement creation.

Kohyangi odiimnikka?

I would teach Physical Science, especially meteorology and geology. Was my major in college, not that I ever use it, doh! The problem would be getting folks that are also interested, most aren't. :p

So maybe teaching Photographic Theory and/or Color theory, since that is what I do most everyday in my line of work. :)

Edit to add: As far as true SL skills, building, texturing and clothing, as well as SL basics.

Advanced scripting topics.
  1. Advanced interscript communication
  2. Text parsing
  3. Routing, multiplexing, and packetizing (basically software-level implementation of portions of the OSI model)
  4. Communication with the outside world
  5. Shared memory modeling & implementation

I would not take on any n00b scripters and I would charge for my time. I also wouldn't write a single line of code for the student, because that wouldn't really be teaching. That would be consulting, and I would charge significantly more for that. :)

Building... I'd love to have a few students to tutor, but nobody ever stops by. Must be my abrasiveness on the forums.

I'm much friendlier in-world. :)

Plans are in the works for a traditional university-style writer's workshop.

I will be leading a poetry workshop for beginning and more advanced writers (if you write prose, you are on your own until we can find a more multi-faceted writer :) ). In rl, I teach English, and I would be honored to see what sl writers are producing.

The tentative start date is the end of May, and the workshop will be four weeks in duration.

If you have questions, please feel free to IM me in world.

I used to teach an efficient prim use / prim tricks class. Although I'm a better scripter than a builder, I find I enjoy teaching building much more than scripting.

I still attend classes when I notice them going on. Toy's recent class on use of water was excellent. I was always garbage with water effects, and between Toy's class (and some great ideas from her) and a nudge or two from Valadeza, I'm starting to get better. :-)

SL is the only place I can honestly say I've gotten something out of every class I've attended.

Regards,

-Flip

Well, I taught a chinese class, but that may very well be on hold till I figure out some sound file stuff. I dunno, maybe an asian art history? I'd say a general art history, but I haven't studied western art in... golly. A dog's age, at least.

Possibly how to make plant textures in PSP, followed by making plants in SL. Not sure if anyone would be interested though.

I would teach a class about how to effectively use that amazing piece of technology called Snapzilla. I'm constantly surprised how few people know it exists, let alone use it.

Hell, I think I'mma post a new thread just 'bout dat!

Olmy, are you asking about classes specifically for SL situations? Or sort of an entertaining, liberal arts approach?

Just clarifying.

Related to SL:

- Using SL as an educational medium
- Ethnic Clothing in SL - Techniques and Limitations
- Stress Management using Biofeedback (provided we could get prop #203 passed)

General, not specific to SL:

- Chinese Language (Wyn, I have some ideas about sound files...)
- English as a Second Language
- Statistics, possibly algebra, calculus (particle graphers, anyone?)
- Basic Programming (could do this as basic scripting, I suppose)
- Assessment of Critical Thinking Tasks
