*ahem* What about hobos from the Hobo Railroad? We only roleplay, but we're still beggers(Not the annoying kind, and we expect no money)! Naw, you guys are cool. You offered to share your stew with me and never asked for anything at all. _____________________

Yes i was too hit today, and rebuse reported the person, i posted in the hotline forum before finding this as its getting damn annoying being hot by these from the mentor group
"hi may i borrow $L100 for a texture upload please, im trying to make a car but i have no money if you dont have 100 may i have anything so it can be put towards the cost of the texture uploads please, ill pay you back asap." Now being a mentor i have plenty of freebies so instead kindly offered a car kit which has dozens of textures included, to build up a car, i didnt think the person needed more as they were new to the game from their creation date and having an absolutely blank profile including no rates. As far as im concerned i'll give what i can as the freebies i have, i never give money out, if i dont have the freenies i point people to yadni's junkyard or to the free bazar in stillman My post to hotline just got answered " Glad you asked! Spamming like that is emphatically not allowed. Yes, that's the appropriate action to take, and informing a Liaison so we'll have a heads-up is a good idea too. Ticking the "Include chat history" button in the abuse report will also emphasize what's going on. Be sure to include the name of who sent the spam, sometimes we get reports without names." So i'll be abuse reporting every single spam i get _____________________

My favorite was the guy in the barrel and brings his cardboard box with him. It's been so long since I've seen it. I gave him some $L for originality.
As for begging... well... I tend to beg, but it isn't for money ![]() _____________________

Spamming for gold...
06-30-2005 12:56
I was hit for money after about five days in SL. I was living in De Haro, having been conned out of my SL cash for PG land which had to have a tent or hut on it lol. The guy was one I met in a shop, and he came equipped with the most emormous gun.
Since then it has happened about a dozen times that I have been asked for money by people I have helped as newbies, or for specific things. I was spammed by the person who is asking for 100 for texture uploads, and I gave it to him. I have been in the situation where I haven't been able to upload textures due to a shortage of lindens, and I thought he was genuine. When he spammed both the people I was with, and within 24 hours several other friends, I realised it was a con, of course. It is a shame, because it makes everyone wary about giving to people, and one of the most wonderful things about this place is how generous people are ![]() Cali |

A Linden donated a train car to the project but I'm pretty sure that was not in response to any begging on anyone's part. _____________________

Back in the hood, it was a common held belief that money given to panhandlers would most likely be spent on a bottle of Thunderbird or drugs. My mother taught me to give money to groups which supported the community instead. She also told me to spend as much time as I needed volunteering with the group to ensure that my money was being spent wisely.
My brother taught me a variation on the theme after we were approached for a handout on the street. "He'd just spend it on drugs and that's what I planned on using it for." _____________________

Well, I got my first begging IM by my 2nd week in SL, and had been getting some time after time from various people ever since.
Most ask for maybe 100 or 200 L$, a guy (with a huge ego I have to add) came in and basically bad mouthed me to give him 100,000 L$. He didn't last long, but still, us business owners are hit hardest with these kinds of things time after time, we simply don't care anymore. As a fair warning to all, any begging will subject you to some severe punishment from either A) my briefcase, B) my katana, or C) my machine gun. So, good luck. _____________________

I thankfully haven't received the spam which seems to have triggered this. Apart from that I think I've had *one* person ever beg in SL which is considerably less than I get irl.
I don't think that there is an actual problem. _____________________

I do not give to beggars in RL because as long as they can get money that way for their drugs or whatever, they will never be motivated to work towards a better life.
In SL I have given money to people who haven't asked for it, like a newbie shopping or something. I had a friend who would IM me only when he needed money for uploading. One day I asked him to make a fence for me in exchange for the money he had never paid me back. He didn't link the fence properly and then when I tried to link it, I found out he had made it no mod, which I thought was kind of mean. When I first came to SL, I would go to meetings or the occasional clubs where someone would say "thank you for the ratings but sorry I can't afford to rate you back". This would result in more than a few people giving this person some money. After this happened a couple of times I asked around and figured out the guy must have made a nice bit of Lindens with that line. _____________________

I read this, logged on, and got this after 5 minutes in the game:
"hello, may i borrow $L 100 for texture uploads, im trying to make a car and i need loads of custom textures ill give you the car when its finished as a thankyou for letting me borrow $l100 of you, is this ok?" Me: No (closes IM) I sometimes say that the person is being very rude - think that ever gets paid attention to, though? _____________________

begging is hard work and a full time job with little compensation and low benefits. I applaud anyone with the gumption to pursue begging as a career.

I will admit that I do occasionally actually enjoy having someone beg.

Old Thread but it's still going on

I did a search to see if anyone else was having this begging problem too. Well it sure looks like others are having this problem.
I've had a few random IM's from people no where near me asking me for Linden money. I have no idea why I was singled out to beg from. I usually just ignore them as I did in Everquest. Anyway this last guy gave me a sob story after I told him that begging is frowned upon in SL. *mute whathisname* What's up with all the begging lately? And yes this is a major pet peeve I have, since I started playing EQ 6 years ago. I can't stand that! |

Just today, in my random trips around the game, I got a simple,
Them: Hello Me: Hi Since I hit a patch of lag, I kept walking away and wound up some where else.. Don't ask, my connection bites and I am soo going to take it out back and shoot it. Them (shouts) R U RICH?! I just pretend I never hear anything after this question, because I know the possible outcomes of it, usually ending in begging. It happens in Lineage 2 also.. Damn playing a female dwarf automatically means I am rich.. it's gotta. Right.. I only wish. I don't bother responding, not to IM's not to spoken requests unless they are asking politely for something other than Lindens, and even then, I usually just direct them to the freebie places (as that's where I started). Friends even get shown to the freebie places, which they appreciate, because they get to pick what they want and not just what I have. _____________________

I rarely have beggers in SL. (I live in Dallas, so we have beggers on the ritziest of stree corners, just begging to be shot) I've gotten the usual IM spams from people asking for money, usually they were born THAT DAY, and you can't contact them. I don't provide assistance, or even tolerate any kind of crap from people born within the last three days. If they really are just stupid, inconsiderate noobs, so be it, but likely they are greifers or scammers that end up on the business end of my pushgun.

I'm still rather new to this game. I have never recieved a begger im, but i don't see the benefits of begging if it just gets you a bad reputation and or attacked sometimes.
I may be new but I know to not beg, if i want anything I'll try and save up for it or live without it. But I'm just an odd person it seems. |
