You: hello? him: Hey? him: Oh? You: oh what?..can i help? him: Yeah, got aviators? You: how do you mean? him: Are you english? You: yes..and i know what aviators are You: how do you mean have i got them? him: Okay.. him: .. him: Umm. him: Do you have a pair.. You: as in glasses? You: yes him: May i have a copy, mate? him: They match me afro. You: sure...got some money? him: You can't dig into the kindness of your own heart and blow the capitalism? You: nope...can you stop begging and save some money? him: I didn't beg. You: no? him: No. him: I asked. him: Difference You: wanted something for free without offering to pay? You: begging to me ...mate him: Begging has nothing to do with value ...mate him: Was i pleading with you> him: No, i made a simple request. him: Fucking bitch.
then the pleasant individual TP'ed out before i could finish my reply
OK, maybe it's not a big deal for me to give him a pair of 'Aviators', but a) i paid for them, b) i only have one set. As he said 'Difference'
What's galling to me right now is the number of ppl coming up to me and asking for money or items when i've never met them. Don't get me wrong..........i've given lots of items away in the past to help out newbies and some not-so-newbies, including stuff i've bought and have no further use for. However i'm getting sick of this happening and seeming to be on the increase, and i've even been spammed in IM by ppl asking for money too. Yes i mean 'spammed', i've had frds had the same message 'verbatim' within minutes or seconds, a live helper was spammed with the same message while i was asking for advice once lol.
I'm just curious as to whether it IS on the increase or am i the unlucky one who seems to get picked on? *grins*

You're not the only one, never fear, and in my experience the ones who bang on about capitalism are the biggest thieves.

I have been IM'd on more than one occasion, and asked for L100 or 200 so they can download textures. I ask them what textures they want, as I may have them and never get a reply. I quite often give newbies some money but I hate begging.
I definitely want to change my first name - get all sorts of weird IMs because these people work through the alphabet. Coming back as ZZara next time lol.

I've never encountered begging till last night while I was perusing some stuff in a back street shop in Midnight City.
A guy I've never seen before flies in and stands up right next to me...
'Hello'
(so I say Hi)
'Can I have some money please?'
etc, etc..
(eventually I TP home in annoyance)
Irritating and basically downright rude, especially as I'm almost broke myself right now, he he.

Personally, I love beggars. We're all God's children and all need to be given food, shelter, and love

From: Jack Digeridoo OMFG!!! Just give him your stupid glasses it's like 5 cents in RL and you make someone smile. I had someone IM me the other day .. "I like the look of your AV, give me 100L to upload some textures" No "please", not even the decency to appear in front of me just a spam. Begging in SL is nothing like RL, in RL some people really do need help to get back on their feet. Giving them money is rarely the answer to their problems though. I absolutely never give to a beggar in SL. Make someone smile, yes sure ! They go off thinking "yay! mugged that stupid cow!". In SL no-one has an excuse to beg for anything. Don't beg in SL unless it's role play, in which case don't expect sympathy. Asking politely for help is not the same as begging and I've been known to give things to people simply because they made me laugh or offered a trade of some sort. Anyone who falls for this dumb trick in SL is simply stupid.

I don't know about that, when you're new it's pretty hard to to justify spending real money on AV toys. Are you sure they would walk off thinking you are stupid? I mean, most people I know, after getting silly googles for their AV, would think you were cool.

As for the original question, I don't think begging is on the increase. There's about 10 times the number of people playing SL now than when I started and I've only met 2 or 3 people I would categorise as a "beggar" in all my time. But there's a person going around SL atm who is using very questionable methods to obtain stuff from people, begging to me, is when someone impolitely demands goods for nothing in return other than a TP out there never to be seen again.

Alexa Hi Alexa, I could be wrong, but i think it depends on what group lists you are on for most of them. That is they are spamming a group instead of the whole of SL most of the time. No offense to the elbow room guys who do a good job of kicking these folks out, but by far the majoirty of my spam comes from that list or group. Sadly if you are generous and have a larege open group, there are idiots who want to tae advantage of it. .

I mean, most people I know, after getting silly googles for their AV, would think you were cool. Isn't it just like RL, and really all about the way you ask? I think it is obviously possible to need money in SL sometimes and not have it, and I have been both the recipient and the lender of money or items to/from different people at different times. But come-on, you are asking for a favour, the least you could do is be polite and use more than just a few grunts to communicate. I mean I really question the way people were brought up sometimes. Didn't this person's mother teach them the basics of human communiction and manners? Does this kind of rude grasping behaviour actually work? ?

I have no use for deadbeats. I started out poor just like every other newbie, and I have never once begged for a handout. In fact, I'm now in the process of selling my land so I can move to a new sim and I've had at least 3 offers from friends who are willing to loan me the money to do it now. I've turned them down -- one went ahead and sent me a sizable loan anyway, bless her heart -- but it's nice to know that they trust me enough and that if I was ever completely desperate there's a place to turn. But I earned that credibility and respect from my friends the hard way, and I'm not about to mortgage it by begging. Forget for a moment that we're talking 'play' money and a world that many newcomers view as a 'game' -- let's talk for a moment about self-respect. How much self respect does it take for someone to try to be self-reliant and figure out their own way to make $Lindens, instead of annoying other players they don't even know? I've only had one beggar so far, but I'm still poor enough it wasn't hard to just tell them "No, I'm poor too". I only have one person on my Mute list, a club owner who kept spamming me, so there's plenty of room to add beggars. That's my solution to beggar-spam. From: Jack Digeridoo OMFG!!! Just give him your stupid glasses it's like 5 cents in RL and you make someone smile. Using your own logic, it's only $20 USD to buy himself a whopping $5,000L on GOM. Then he won't have to beg any more, saving his 'victims' from the annoyance and himself from the disgrace.

You could be polite and ignore them maybe? From: someone I mean I really question the way people were brought up sometimes. Didn't this person's mother teach them the basics of human communiction and manners? Does this kind of rude grasping behaviour actually work?
Logging into SL and asking for free stuff seems pretty normal for me. Getting pissed off when someone asks for a freebie is something my mom would frown upon.

If that's an annoyance, people asking for free things, you lack perspective.

From: Jack Digeridoo If that's an annoyance, people asking for free things, you lack perspective. Asking once is not a crime. Asking repeatedly, following the target around and spamming them IS an annoyance. If you don't see that, it's more than perspective that you lack.

Begging is more common in most Online Games -- we always assumed was the younger players. Perhaps the beggar set has turned 18 now and are coming to Second Life. In Anarchy I was a major target becuase of my level. Here I guess they just target anyone?

I just got hit with the "Give me $100 to upload textures" IM today. I abuse reported and didn't respond to the IM. The person had been here for over a month, 0 rates received or given, no Interests, no Picks, no info of any kind.. They're most likely just alts used to spam for money.
