Whats this gonna cost someone that hosts a popular 'stream'/movie if tons of SL residents show up? I mean in terms of bandwidth/$ from the company hosting the stream for them.

Yay! I can't wait to sneak people in the trunk! And the Drive-In is were I recieved my first BJ, so it has great sentimental value to me.

Ian Falcone had a Drive-in movie on the old Paradise Island. Yes -- it was a little racy but done really well. I think Ian may still have it in his inventory.

Really? Was it done a year and a half ago?

I Googled around and found a helpful FAQ page from a company that will host streaming media. Some general information in there for people wanting to learn more about how to put streaming media on the web, and how to estimate costs. Hope it helps.

Also has a streaming media bandwidth calculator:

Damn you! Damn you to hell!

hahahaha

I love this movies thing! I know there will be tons of porn. I saw some the other night that was just a short clip, shown over and over. I don't know how people can enjoy such an ambiance. Course, we don't have to go to those. We can go to WONDERFUL WONDERFUL DRIVE-INS (how I love those) and indoors theaters, too, with shows like Mystery Science Fiction Theater 3000, or just have horrid old horror movies and be our own commentators, a la Crow and Tom Servo, etc.! what fun this is gonna be

Ummm... you can play streaming video on any textured surface. If you specify the video texture to be 'plywood' par example; any plywood texture in the parcel will be replaced by the video stream...

and since all streamed video is client-side, there's like little lag even for clients. QT was a very clever move on behalf of LL.

As for hosting, you prolly wanna find a host that charges for bandwidth rather than volume transferred. This is generally a cheaper solution for those streaming on-demand content.

When I get my show finished, I want to set up a small viewing theatre to show off the episode trailers with an object that links directly to the torrent of the full episode. :D

Streaming QT and in-world URL links are gonna be the most revolutionary thing in SL since launch I think.

I was told I would need about 10 Mbps to have 40 people at my drive-in. I am currently looking into possible providers for that kind of bandwidth, it all depends on availabilty and pricing in my area.

Nolan ;0 Contact me if you really wanna do the drive in. I have bandwith ;)

That goes for anyone who needs bandwith for video in SL ;0

We will be showing a Godzilla movie on the drive-in screen on Friday night at 8 pst on the preview grid. Location and other details tba. :)

Once the update is released, we will be having "Old movie night", "Anime night", "Horror night", etc.

Can't wait!

(apologies for resurrecting this old thread -- but I've been thinking about building a drive-in screen and so did some digging first and ran across it)

From: Hiro Pendragon
Something like that. The syncing is automatic - you're basically starting the stream for the whole parcel. That's why showing on multiple screens on the same parcel is so smooth - because it's only transmitted to the client once. So there's really no extra bandwidth to make say... a 120.0m x 76.8m screen.

I'm not 100% sure if you can split the screen by scaling the texture

I know for a fact you can split the screen by translating the texture -- my VRRoom will play video on all six walls simultaneously, where each wall is a 4x4 grid of 10m x 10m panels. The video textures align so that the seams aren't even noticeable. I feared I would kill my SL client -- effectively 96 simultaneous video windows! -- but it actually seems to work quite smoothly.

Any thoughts on the best size and aspect ratio for a drive-in movie screen? 40m by 30m, say?

Is there anyway I can sneak in under the fence? ;). I remember doing that with my teenage buddies way back in the day. (5000 years ago)

Tell ya'll what. If someone can put up the space (I need about a quarter of a low-lag sim) I'll make a functional, working drive-thru theature. I will put all the compenents in place, etc, etc, do textures, the works.

I still need someone to front bandwidth, work up the large screen, but I'd make it.

I saw this thread, and I just HAD to reply.

I'm actually working at a drive-in in real life... RIGHT NOW. I'm in the ticket box, and some house nearby has an unsecured wireless router, and I'm just barely able to access it with my laptop, hehe. I don't dare run something as bandwidth intensive as SL (I like to be a courteous internet hobo), but I can certainly surf the web. :D

Just wanted to tell you all that drive-ins are not dead, hehe. I hope you make some neat ones in SL.

Last I heard, the drive-in nearest to me was about an hour away in Jefferson. I should head out there for before the mosquitoes arrive en masse.

Until someone invents the SL mosquito, that's one definite advantage to SL movies. Of course, the refreshing beauty of a late summer night kind of disappears.
