Shhhhhhhhhhhhh!

LOL. I made one some time ago. *The Starlite* It's based on a RL drive-in that used to be near here in RL.

I was hoping that some scripter could help me somehow run *video* on the screen through clever scripting, maybe by showing a series of frames or some such. No such luck.

Now with the streaming video, my dream can become a reality. My only misgiving is that I will be limited to a 10x10 screen. My screen is currently 10x20... :(

Hott!

Nolan, can't the textures be scaled up and then pieces of the movie placed side by side?

Do you mean splitting the video into halves and then playing the halves synched?

Something like that. The syncing is automatic - you're basically starting the stream for the whole parcel. That's why showing on multiple screens on the same parcel is so smooth - because it's only transmitted to the client once. So there's really no extra bandwidth to make say... a 120.0m x 76.8m screen.

I'm not 100% sure if you can split the screen by scaling the texture but:
(a) It seems like something obvious the Lindens would implement
(b) I saw large screen setups in the preview grid. (Not playing, though)

Interesting trick - concave curved screen, since this is 3-D :)

one of the first thoughts i had when i first heard about streaming video coming to SL was to wonder who would do this very thing..

i can't help but wonder how many people would find this nostalgic.. of course, i also can't help but wonder how many cars will be sold just for this purpose.. and how many backseats will be "christened".. lol.

multi prim streaming works
03-20-2005 09:58
Yes it works using the same texture on two different prims on the same property.

I tried it in the 1.6 preview this morning. The texture will have to be manually aligned instead of using the automatic alignment. This means that if you intend to have multiple streams you will need to have the script change the alignment and offset manually for each stream.

There is a function to automatically align the streams on each stream start but this will not work for multi prim displays.

I will have a Drive-In Theater on the "Theater District" sim that will demonstrate this (You will need to become a member of the "Friends of the Theater" to see it on your map).

There's a new business for somebody: Open a drive-in theater with cars that you can rent by the hour or bi-hourly and, um, "use." ;)

Isn't it ironic? Because of the advances in technology (rental DVDs, home theaters, etc.), RL drive-ins have all but died out. Now because of even more advances in technology (SL), we're going to get drive-ins back again.

I love it! :)

Nolan, you should get those funny little clips they used to play during intermission in drive-ins. You know...the ones that say "please visit our concession stand" and have the dancing popcorn and stuff. Classics.

God, I miss drive-ins. I'd rather watch a movie in my car with the top down on a summer night than be crammed next to total strangers in stiff seating with sticky floors.

It's nice though seeing that people have plans for the video streaming beyond porn and landgriefing with giant screens playing "star wars kid" over and over for all eternity.

I have some stills from those clips, but alas no video clips. I guess will have to install a p2p client and see what I can find :) I would LOVE to find some Mr. Magoo cartoons as well.

I think someone should start a chain of Drive-ins in Second Life...I would *love* to do something like a drive-in with my land. But I really don't have the technical know-how nor the bandwidth space to really make it a reality.

If anyone wants to make a series of movie houses, tho....I'm up for hosting one. :)

I was told I would need about 10 Mbps to have 40 people at my drive-in. I am currently looking into possible providers for that kind of bandwidth, it all depends on availabilty and pricing in my area.

Damn you! Damn you to hell!

Hmmm, could we do that with layered screens that are semi-transparent and streaming? (With the glasses of course, because I own some nice ones) :p

Ian Falcone had a Drive-in movie on the old Paradise Island. Yes -- it was a little racy but done really well. I think Ian may still have it in his inventory.
