I think moving from one grid to the other could be quite cool, like dying and going to heaven. You leave all your friends behind, but you know one day not too far off, they'll also come join you, then you'll all be together again :)

Hi Armath,

Welcome to Adult SL. It is sprawling, much bigger than the teen grid I'm told. All that is on the teen grid is also here, albeit more hidden: There can be no sense of community like on a smaller grid because, well, there's just too many of us for SL to remain a tight knit community. Talk to old-timers here and they'll tell the same tale you've been through.

Do not judge the grid by what jumps to your face. Fly around, you'll also find great builds, great people, great communities - plural intended. Explore the small islands on the map: many are works of love by great builders (then again, some are not - shrug). Gypsy Moon is one of my favourites.

I read your blog, you're a great person and enormously talented. SL, MG or TG is what you bring to it, and you obviously can bring a lot. A warm welcome again. Holler or drop by the Chess Club (look for it in "Find";) if you ever need anything.

Best regards,

Welcome to the Main Grid, wonder child ;)

We have porn, blood and gambling machines because we can. As you probably knew beforehand, the MG is like a mish-mash of a million amateur homepages on the Web. Think tripod.com, in 3D ;) But it's ok, because there still are many jewels in that necessary mud. There is not a sense of community, there are MANY. In particular, check the private islands, as these are costly, their owners do take care of them.

Ah, and I must remember to send you your birthday gift this evening.

The Teengrid (and Amarth's apparent line of thinking) reminds me of the good old beta/early live days. Gone, gone.. alas.

Nonetheless, welcome, and a pleasant read on your blog. Nice to see intellect and wit intertwined.

Swing by anytime and say hi, I never move (the grid scares me), so I'm easy to find.

*Waits patiently by the dumpster in MC for unamed Linden to drop the payoff*

All kidding aside, I think you're a hoot, Armie and I'm happy to have met you. May there be many more nights of glow sticks, laughter and bouncy-ball mushroom tag. :)

hey armath,
08-02-2005 07:34
it's your thoughts and your writing (and sigs like "Does a month make me *this* noteworthy?";) that make you noteworty. you speak from your mind and your heart... unless you're a complete lying, hypocritical, two-faced dastardly bastard (and i very much doubt that. :)

as painful as armath's transition has sounded to be - a lil' surprising, but now quite obvious and true that it would have the same flavor as going to college/moving away the first time... kinda made me wistful. (sounds like you already have, but write down your ideas before you acclimate!! :)

well now, i'm excited (no, not like that!! :)... fresh blood (no, not fresh meat!! :), fresh ideas, and this wouldn't have happened without the productive chaos of making a separate grid.

p.s. hey, only four smilies this time! i'm cuttin' down...

I am willing to give you the benefit of the doubt--that your tone is one of jest, but I think that this statement is inappropriate here--especially here.Though you are well within your rights to make any statement you wish, I would ask that you reconsider this particular statement.

If you care to impugn another's actions or motives, you had best start with mine.

It was not totally unexpected that others might think that helping new people, in SL and in RL, stems from a self-serving vanity or a twisted sense of self-importance. You have just typed it out so eloquently and so plainly for all to read, thereby confirming my suspicions.

Puuuulllleeeezzzeee!!!! rofl... It's a joke fer goodness sake. Having fun n goofing off is largely what SL is about, not brow beating demonstrated in your post.

There is great value and worth in a smile, however useless the actual joke may appear. Lighten up a lil.

As fer advice fer the noob... have FUUUN... be yourself... find some peeps to hang out wif n carve out a niche for you in SL, even if that niche happens to be that you try to bring a smile to others faces by saying something silly.

Hiya Armath, got a look at yer blog, it's in my blogroll now so I'll be able to check in!

Oh, and you gotta know Billy's a big ole goofy perv, (the fun kind) and well, if you read more of the forums you'll see who's who and what's what in here.

Careful on your bouncy ball though, I'm worried about that pointy sword of yours, hate to deflate the silliest darn thing we've found in weeks (next to Billy of course) to play with in SL!

There's so much to do in here, so many people to meet you'll be so busy with it all that the stuff you're not interested in will just sorta glide by you, under the radar in not time. Kinda like RL, you don't really read all the articles in the magazines start to finish, examining each page, or if you do, you don't HAVE to, it's all about choice!

See you on the inside!

Update on the state of things.
08-17-2005 23:58
It was the best of times it was the worst of times.

Well. I'm here. I've settled down as much as I will.

As I noted a picture of myself and my partner on the TG map-tab--
I came accross this link on the SL page. http://abcnews.go.com/Technology/FutureTech/story?id=1019818&page=1

Not only does my former TG social circle now have their picture on the news... Aesop Thatch had some bittersweet words to say about the "reverse-end" of my transfer (which is probably *old* news by now)

Anyway, for anyone left who cares, my quick "situation" update:
  1. Madame Maracas has graced me with my own radio show on RadioRadio.
  2. I have a shop in Rapture where I sell my photos.
  3. I have a new home built from scratch in Achylan.. or however it's spelled ^.^
  4. I *have* made friends on the Main Grid, and I still attempt to keep in touch with my TG freinds via AIM and my blog, and Myspace.

good to hear you're coming along so well, Armath!

the "situation" update list may be short, but it's really impressive! a home from scratch, a business, a radio show.. and let's not forget, new friends! :)

seriously, you're flourishing amazingly well.. and i, for one, am incredibly glad to see it.

congrats.. and i'll have to check out some of your goings-ons at some point in time.. you know, when i'm in-world for more than 5 minutes, lol.

There is nothing 'settled' about this list.

Keep fighting the good fight (when it comes to battlemaces--cheaper weapons are *always* better ;))

If you ever get bored (not likely), shoot me an IM, and I'll chatter at you until your chuck your monitor out the window (and you know that I can do it) :D.

Was just thinking....
08-24-2005 20:00
...you are very much an experiment, man. Cuz your situation was quite unnatural right from the start.

- you were only a month in the TG - it's like tossing a month-old baby into adulthood.

- you had no-one of the TG going before you - in a natural environment, you'd have had seen some of your friends leave for the MG, would have heard their stories through AIM, Yahoo or whatever, and you'd be DYING to make the move yourself, if only to see them again.

- no-one has ever done this before you, so no-one could have known what it's like. You are, like it or not, indeed a pioneer.... I guess in 50 years you'll read your memoires to your grand children while rocking on your back porch.... (in a virtual world, of course, where we all will have chosen to live, while our brains float in jars of brine with cables sticking out)

One other thing you'll probably learn in the MG is that suddenly, age will not matter much here. Other than the TG, here you can be at a total loss guessing how old someone might be IRL. Unless of course they give that kinda info away in their profile. To me, it adds some sense of mystery to the whole thing. And it's flipping awesome!!

Wouldn't mind meeting you in world some time. You can say hello to my pet dragon and be silly with me. It's about the only thing I'm good at!

Oh and btw - WELCOME Bokkie!!

I do completely credit Cybin Monde for the "New Mutants" spin on the TG generation. He made an observasion, I rolled with it.

It is valid though.

We are a new breed with new powers. ^_^
