From: Susie Boffin I am not in any way advocating any form of land or building control. I am just curious why, for example, a person would buy land in a beautiful wooded sim and then proceed to remove all of the trees and build a huge purple box that hugs the land boundries. I have also seen techniqually good builds that are so out of place with their surroundings I want to scream.
It is baffling. Builds that go right up to the property line are another pet peeve of mine.

I have also seen techniqually good builds that are so out of place with their surroundings I want to scream. Before I buy land I have an idea what I want to put on it and search for the right land where it will fit in instead of forcing my creations onto it. I also look at the surrounding buildings and talk to the neigbors and tell them what my plans are before I buy. If I wanted to build huge immense pink towers with revolving searchlights I would pick the appropriate spot for such an eyesore if I could find one. On the trees, I'd have some around my build, if they didn't count as prims. As it is, I don't have any furniture, I'm tempted to go ahead and put the trees. *sigh* Ah well.. (No the big purple thing isn't mine. I have a nice small home/shop. ) I try to see what is already built and.. didn't build anything like it at the time. And yes, my first few attempts were.. blindingly horrible if you ask me, but as I learn, I am getting better and my home actually is good enough that I haven't had the urge to rebuild it in over 2 weeks!

Build in context!
07-20-2005 11:24
I think it's important for builders and thier clients to build in the context of the surrounding environment. It's also important to remember that every builder is at a different build ability and creativity level - but many times, those skills will mature. I try to build in the context of the surrounding environment and work *with* it - not against it. This is not to say that there isn't room for fantasy builds, etc. Personally, I love building on hillsides as it presents a much great challenge and the end result (usually) looks well integrated to the surroundings. As a builder, let me state this rule:
Murphy's rules of building I: What one person thinks will fit in a region, based on his contact with other builds, will offend at least ONE person who calls it an eyesore. This will happen regardless of the number of people who like it.

Although I pretty much agree with the theme of this thread... Is there any problem with taking land and completely changing the environment? I wish I had before pictures to go with these after pictures but Toast Bard did a fabulous job landscaping a sort of east coast beach (with west coast houses) on the edge Deimos. The rest of the sim has no real apprent direction, being an newer player I am not sure what the sim orriginally looked like but there seems to be a small push to a pine forest sort of look, but its not overly dominating. I guess my point is that you shouldnt always just surender to the current suroundings, sometimes something fresh and different is what a sim really needs. And its just my humble opinion Toast's beach didnt ruin the feel of the sim, it added to it. It's actually why I decided to move there, its just so pretty.

Let's face it, you moved to Deimos because it's MATOORE and you enjoy running around the beach naked. Glad you bought the additional land. I was tired of seeing you streaking around the streets of Boardman.

I think the key is that Toast changed it to accentuate the features and with all of the additional landscaping and clever/attractive builds ended up with a fine environment.

But I like purple! I see so much in SL that looks like RL, but so much more is possible. I like seeing that, too. I hope these aren't the builds in question.... -Easy

From: Olympia Rebus It is baffling.
Builds that go right up to the property line are another pet peeve of mine. In my very early months of sl, Candie Apple bought the property right next to mine. I had no idea that it was considered "rude" to build right up to the property line. Candie however took me under her wing and explained some sl manners. I am greatful to this day. Point being how many new ppl don't know good SL building manners. Probalby lots. Take the time to be a good neigbor and just talk to them. It goes a long long way. If that doesn't work look around for a planned community that fits the same interests you have. Just my 2 cents Cat

From: Roberta Dalek Fabulous! Give me a flying room over suburban hell any day! Thanks, Roberta! When I release this, you can have one in any color you like... ...as long as it's purple! Actually, I'm not at all opposed to some texture help.... But in the mean time, I think I'll practice doing barrel rolls on takeoff... -Easy

Personally I just plum dont like floating buildings, no matter how astetically pleasing they look, they just seem tacky.. My 1 lindy... sky boxes that are otherwise invisiblr are ok by the waves, but dam, surly to god its not hard to stick a few legs on the buildings to make them appear anchored?

Now, I confess that "Stick some giant cubes in the air to simulate ground and then build a RL-style house" kinda bugs me, but you'll never take away my flyign islands.

You make a good point here, Catherine It's true that many people, particularly new people, don't realize that building up to the property line (or terraforming to the property line) is considered by some to be a taboo. Thus, while I may find the practice annoying, I have to remember that this wasn't done out of spite or carelessness. I confess I have built a wall right on the property line to hide the huge purple box next door that is built right up to the property line.
