Leaderboards are gamed, and therefore pointless. (As in, distributing your wealth through alts so as to fudge the numbers, which is what I do because my bank account is no ones fucking business but mine). One of the very few times I did bother to look I was amused to see someone, their alts and two 'cash carriers' for them on the leaderboard at the same time. It's not an accurate reflection of anything. At all.

And frankly, anyone who plays Second Life by the leaderboards is very, very sad indeed.

Forbes keeps lists of top billionaires and top companies. Does that mean RL business is a game, too?

Well, Forbes runs Fortune 500 list. Practically every company looks at that as an official listing of who's who's in companies based on metrics of size and profits.

Linden runs the Leaderboard. It's an official listing of players based on size of land and profits.

Both use metrics of money to determine scores. Both are look at as the official ranker of "score".

SL is a subset of RL.

No. It's not. That's absolute crap and you know it.

It's a listing of AVATARS and essentially the amount of money they have in their account or have traded via that avatar. It takes nothing more than changing USD for L$ to get on the list.

It also means that the same players can and do have several avatars in those leaderboards as mentioned above.

IRL, you don't tend to find that the Forbes 500 is actually 200 people with three or four personas, and I'm lead to believe that the figures actually mean something other than how much passed through your bank account.

You're right, it is avatars, not players. And, you're right, the Leaderboard is pretty much just "how much money is tied into SL".

But in the Fortune 500, multiple companies could be held by one holding company, and given the fraud (Tyco, Enron, et al) happening lately, it's clear that those figures aren't exact either. But, if companies were to funnel money into their bank account... yeah, that's still profits.

But the problem is, Kris, that your "it's just a game" assertion has nothing to do with this. It has nothing to do with the price of rice in China.

BTW, I've also said on numerous occasions that Second Life is not, and never will be, ever, the Metaverse. I've also said that Linden Labs are not capable of producing 'The' 'Metaverse'. Therefore, hand in hand with my previous assertion, Second Life is nothing more than a buggy game trying to pretend to be something more than it is. Perhaps you'd like to get your teeth into that one too?
