What does a player government mean to you?

The thing is..who in their right mind is gonna pay a monthly fee to be part of a player ran government anyway? I know I do not want to pay to work lol. I may dance for money..but I consider dancing and entertainment fun..not being a Mayor or Governor.
<snip>
But when you hold office in a government..you don't get to log in or out when you want. You have to be at work on time..and there are schedules to abide by just like any other (JOB).

People already "work" in SL. Those who run large attractions, those who have shops, those who host events on a regular basis. To some, jobs can be fun. I'd say there are a heck of a lot of people working in SL, and I for one am thankful to each of them for what they bring to the community.

The same can be said for those who have fun working in a player run government. You consider dancing and entertainment fun, but you consider it "fun" work, so do others. You don't consider working in a player run government as your idea of fun, well, others do. Whatever floats your boat. Just because it isn't fun for you, doesn't mean others won't enjoy it. Just as not everyone likes to go to the dance clubs, malls, bingo, etc, it doesn't mean that still others *do* enjoy those very things.

Kris, I don't know if this is new or not but I've seen it in a few of your posts lately. You seem to be using the words "fuck" or "fucking" quite a bit in your posts. Despite the presence of the star in place of the first vowel, it comes off as excessively hostile. Perhaps this could be avoided in future posts.

I want player government to be exactly what it will be: an excercise in futility with a main effect of shutting up the people who are screaming for player government.

I'm not being hostile. Just expressive. And it's how I choose to express myself. 'kay? I'm sorry I don't have your writing skills or eloquence, but I R doin teh best wif wot I got.

Offends your sensibilities? Perhaps this could be avoided by not reading future posts. I can assure you I have nothing to say that would interest you anyway, Ulrika, and there's a high percentage chance of cussing being involved. :)

What do you want player governments to be?

only for those who want to play SL as some politcal game. Leave those alone who do not wish to partake in those sort of games. Whats been started so far are just plain not working.
I have no idea why this was made into a poll, to get correct results the choices would have to have been 8 pages long :)

Holy Crow!

Someone who advocates the *grass roots* use of that word, on a sign, on someone else's build now taking exception to it.

As for this *announcement*, it wouldn't happen to be about Kristallnacht would it?

I vote other. Keep it on your own property and I don't give a f*ck what you do, and I will support and fight your right to do so. The minute some type of control over what someone else builds or does occurs OUTSIDE your village I will raise hell and I am sure a few others will too.

It really depends on how the gov't is created. If it's a community-wide governing body, it means my SL days are over.

If it's a voluntary, regional governing body (ala Ulrika and Kendra's project) then it's fine by me.

My "other" response:

Minimalist dispute resolution for contractual matters (joint ventures, intellectual property rights, etc.). Implied is a standardized contract format.

Other -- Transparent self-regulating decentralized systems. One that will never give any resident or group thereof power over another or any others, but still allow for an anonymous set of tools to govern ourselves. Tools that allow conflict resolution or institutional changes for example; without the use of a single person, but the collective community -- and anonymous so as to prevent bias.

To make it even more advanced, classifications systems could be used for a database to start weighting random samples of the population to use for psuedo-voting systems and developing basic responses to common requests. Perhaps this database could be mined by LL employees to give them a 30 000ft top-down view of the social atmosphere in SL... effectively giving each employee the power to address a broader set of users with common issues.

Game Governments..........

I have been quietly reading these Government threads for a while now an watching how things progress. So far everything is going as I expected. I have been dealing with PC games since there creation an I have seen about 10-12 game goverments in that time. All have failed in the long term. Some have never even gotten off the ground.

generally this is how it goes. A new government is created with a lot of HARD work (an opposition). All involved with it have a blast an try to organize things (like game mechanics for example). Either more join the Gov, or more become opposed to it. Then internal strife rears its ugly head an some kind of "power-strugle" issues within the Gov itself. People are voted out of the Gov, an new ones join.

Eventually it happens though. The Government fails due to numerous reasons. Missmanagement, corruption, opposition, lack of intrest, ect. Can in game Governments succeed? Well that depends on the defanition of "success". Can the Gov help the game? Yes if done right. Will there be opposition to it? Yes most definatly, no matter what the Government is.

Will it work in the short end and/or the long end of things? On the short end, yes it can BUT only if handled correctly. On the long end of things though, nope not a snowball's chance in hell. No in game Government has ever lasted forever, an certinly not for years. The best one can hope for is that those in the Gov have fun with there "clan" an don't mess up the game itself or their in game friendships.

If these forums are any indication of the Govenments success/failyer, well I for one am not woried in the slightest. Everything is proceeding very much the same as all the other Government threads I have ever read on other game sites thats for sure.......

Good luck with the Government peoples..... You are gonna need it in the end..........

I just want people to stop sullying MY forums with boring inane posts about government. I don't need any form of government in SL beyond LL dealing with griefers and minors. It would be nice if we actually HAD that.

Other. Better-defined player rights and responsibilities, contracts, economic codes to encourage stability, profit, and growth. Nothing else at this time. In your sim, do what you want.
