What places can you go and still see what SL looked like "a long time ago"?
Just what constitutes a long time ago will vary from person to person.
To me, Tehama reminds me of old SL, last time I looked.
I miss old Perry, I think that's where one of the learning platforms was. Is that right?

I wasn't around when Lime was the WA, but the Lime build reminds me of old Ahern, when it wasn't so hostile.

Nothing keeps people from hanging at the Lime place, maybe we could get the Lindens to make an open join group that owns land there, that would let people set that as their home point, and maybe help it be a useful public socializing area.
I just teleported into Rausch and got pushobjected into the corner of the sim and suffered near death.
Rausch may have moved but instant death reminds me of old Rausch.

From: Zapoteth Zaius De Haro.. First place I owned land back in Feb/March 2004.. Hasn't really changed much I'm at De Haro now, there's a farm that is probably the farm I remember, with a horse that neighs when you touch it. And a tree that's hollow at the bottom, with a tiny fireplace that must be for something very small. De Haro has some seats for a meeting righ in the middle of the sim. They remind me of the seats at old Stage 4.

Siggy's bum. Seriously though, is Taber Village still alive and kicking? If so, it's definately worth a look. Last time I was there, some of Steller Sunshines builds from waaaaay back were still there.

The mountain top and park in Clemintina are pretty much as they were when I joined. There are pictures in the basement of the Governor's mansion of the very early days of SL. The Pin Pot Inn and Siggy's Palace in Taber have been around since 1.1 at least. Oh and the beanstalk in Welsh may be the oldest inworld build.
Finally, the Welcome Area in Lime has not been used for a long time but is still intact. It's not the absolute original version, but I believe the second iteration. The stage in the corner is the same model as Stage 4 that used to be in Dore. Many (most) events used to happen there after the amphitheatre in Clara was destroyed.

I don't recall what it used to look like but there is a Tabor Tudor Village , and right next to that is a beanstalk belonging to Steller Sunshine. Taber is empty save for me. What a shame. It's a nice place. Now down south per Siggy's suggestion, to Clementina.

From: Verkin Raven I wasn't around when Lime was the WA, but the Lime build reminds me of old Ahern, when it wasn't so hostile. Lime has generally been the "backup" WA. I think there used to be a WA in Ritch too, but it disappeared a long time ago. This was well before both ampetheatres disappeared prior to 1.2. The most visible nostalgia build in SL has to be the old Shangri-La build near the WA. It was nearly torn down but a very vocal group of residents saved it from the Linden wrecking ball. I was wandering around the Governor's Mansion the other day. Its mostly the same as it was in beta, but I think prim limits on land may have changed things. I think the basement is different too. Back in the day, we had prim decay. For those of you who came in later, prims left on public land or land that you did not own would disappear after a certain amount of time. I think the old Boardwalk in Varney was a victim of prim decay. Little bits of it disappeared over time, due to decay and prim looters. De-rezzing stray prims was an easy 10 Lindens per prim.

Thank You Early Creators

It's awkward getting pictures here at times, I was using two machines, and tried something that would only work on one machine.
Then I tried to access one machine from the other, and the new machine has so much security on it it can't quite remember it's two feet from the other and should be on good terms with it.
So, at any rate, in Clementina there's a sign, and here's a pic of that.
In Clementina there is the Governor's Mansion, looking a bit old fashioned compared to the complex structures and textures one sees in today's builds.
There's Clementina Falls, just waiting for some people who have never seen it to be shown it by some oldtimers.
Maybe their guide could be you.

From: Teeny Leviathan WA in Ritch The sound of the sim name is giving me an idea, lets put the WA right in the middle of Rausch, with the two new combat zones on either side. Noobs might not like it but they would be good eatin'.

Torley, Torley. Shhhhh!
...
Anyway - Varney - we've tried to preserve it the best we can after the boardwalk went away. After the top of Varney Mountain was turned into a bowl, that was a pretty big change, but otherwise we've been continuing to keep a community.
And I miss old Da Boom. No offense to The Edge, but Da Boom used to be a place you could go, chill out, shop, and not have 35 people lagging the sim.

In Natomo I see a sign made by Tcoz Bach, advising us that all of our inworld information is being put on display to the general public.
He can't be too upset about it because there aren't any exclamation marks at all on the sign.
OMG ANGRY PEOPLE, YOU HAVE TO USE LOTSA THESE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! how else will people know you are upset???
The place looks like Noah should come floating in on a big boat.
Well I'm too impatient to find the statue, but I do see the old Spook House, and that certainly reminds of SL days gone by. Worth getting a noob to come see, for sure. I'd add a few exclamation marks but then you might think I was upset.
-------------------
I did find a statue owned by someone well known. I guess I will let others figure it out themselves.

A question for the participants of this thread.
Are there heirlooms, memorabilia, structures or objects that would be... nearly priceless, in terms of Metaverse history?
Imagine the metaverse ten years from now. What has appreciated in value? The $L? Perhaps not.
My guesses:
- Linden (and other) 'cards' - Instances of a 'Fez' I have heard about - historic structures - mere screenshots of important historic people, places, events - some timeless creations of designers that have moved on - an infamous griefer's weapon of choice? - early art from yet-to-be-discovered masters? - character-defining items of famous residents? - the long-lost texts of prophetic forum posts?
I presume that 'modify', 'copy', or 'no transfer' are very hostile to retention of value, but surely some items have the right qualifications.
So the question - what near-priceless objects are out there, and is there already a nascent market?

From: Desmond Shang So the question - what near-priceless objects are out there, and is there already a nascent market?
VERY fascinating question! I have seen some private collections of tori tortured into demented shapes that cannot currently been attained due to changes in limits, as well as prims that appeared (but I did not personally confirm) to be larger than 10 x 10 x 10 m. I've taken a lot of screenshots to document my Second Life. I have some rare Linden cards and objects from long-departed Residents too. And in its own, homey sort of way, I think my blog fondly reflects what I can warmly look back on in the future.

Thee's a tombstone in Varney, up near the top of the mountain. It's sad; it says "R.I.P. In Memory Of [withheld] ... Great Friend"
Can't tell if it was merely an avatar's digital demise or a real person.
The center of the mountain shows what the old high landheight adjustments allowed.
Maybe the old high terraform limit of 40 meters - was it plus or minus 40 meters from sea level? - ought to be brought back.

The Kazenojin tower/landing docks in Gray evokes nostalgia in me. I remember Apsinthion Protagonist taking me there when I was a noob just a day or two old, and having her try to show me how to work a flight script (which I bungled, of course). Also, Apsinthion's clock tower in Tan has been there as long as I can remember; I'm not even sure if the chimes sound on the hour anymore. I owned a bunch of land next to the clock tower for probably about 10 months, and sometimes I still regret selling it. Ah, well, memories.

My place in Afton has been kept more or less the same since the sim came up... 1.5 years ago? It still has the original tree house, made by Lisse Livingston, that came with the plot.

If you would like to see some of the 'old' locations from SL, I recommend a visit to the SL History Wiki. It has all sorts of information on days gone by in SL and there are some pictures on the Locations page.

Juro,
I had a look at the 'people' section, and that was enough to persuade me not to look any more.

From: Selador Cellardoor Juro, I had a look at the 'people' section, and that was enough to persuade me not to look any more. LOL! OK, I can see that - but, it should be more of an incentive to contribute. I've been snapping pictures and digging through my (admittedly foggy) memory banks because it is a great resource. When we're all old and we've moved onto the 'retirement' sims, we can take a look back and see where we once were.
