Who are these newbies that come into SL thinking that everyone else is a computer and not knowing how to quit?! I got one today saying "r u a computer?" to which I responded, "No, everyone in here is a real person." He said "f**k u u c***k sucking n****r." Hmmm.....
I got another one that saw the typing animation and said "what r u all typing?" She had the typing animation herself. Hmmmm....
A few out there told me that they wanted to make me their bitch. That was really uncalled for.
Scariest of all probobly was when I met this newb that said he would come to my house and kill me if I didn't give him my experience points.
Guys, stay in school and don't do drugs. Thanks.

All I can say is I agree with your last sentence. A couple of those things are understandable, a couple aren't. But stay in school and don't do drugs, the words of Mr. T are with us forever.

At the welcome area in Ahern of course. You should stay there for a bit, I swear they're the most colorful people on earth.

Darwin, tell them yes, and then mess with their heads, it'll be much more fun that way. Tell them that their game is corrupt or something. If they don't at least capitalize the letter "U" when using it in place of a word, then it's confusion time.

I can really understand this since I'm one of those newb's. Hopefully not one of the bad ones. There's a lot of fallout from EQ right about now. In fact, the way I got into MMO's. Played EQ for over 3 years before I got tired of it. The EQ side of it's not too bad really, sure there are plenty of gankers and malcontents, but right about now theres another wave coming in. The FPS crowd. Planetside debutted 2 months ago showing a bizzillion twitch FPS l337 boys what a real MMO is like. PS didn't hook anywhere near as many as SOE expected, and I'm betting that, like me, a ton of those twitchers are browsing for a new MMO to try to, well, I'll be nice and say 'push the boundries'. My point is, from the few people I've had time to talk to, inbetween shopping, it seems a lot of the people playing ( playing seems the wrong word to me ) come from more of a "The Sims" background. A game where artistic social interaction is both the purpose and the motivation for playing is WAY weird for an RPG background, for an FPS twitcher? Forget it. Of course, I could be talking outta my butt. One of the things about SL that appeal to me so much is the lack of l337ness. I don't have to worry about whether we're going to spends flippin HOURS grinding my teeth hoping some damn piece of trash drops so I can be more POWA so I can spends flippin HOURS grinding my teeth over a bigger mob. All so I and my fellow band preen and boast that we hacked and slashed for days to look the way we do. "Ooooo Cool sword" ... 3 years of that. ....bleh The FPS crowd? They need, they crave the high score. They're a very high-strung, caffiene and nocotiney people. Then can be seen nervously tapping their fingers, peering suspiciously into dark corners at Starbucks. They constantly jerk suddenly, ducking away from unexpected noises they mistake for blaster shots, while having the annoying habit of looking under every stray bit of trash in the hopes of finding ammo or health. I don't think they'll mix well. And I'm not putting FPS'ers down either, I've also player Quake, was crazy about Team Fortress, CS and I also play Planetside still, but SL, at least as I see it, is a fantasy MMO. As far as I know, maybe the first of it's genre. omg I just realized how long I've been babbling. ps I played a bard for 3 years on EQ. If you're not familiar with the game, that means I almost never got to say anything, for hours on end. I'm new, not used to chatting all the time, and still not real good at meeting people. If you see me flying around, say hi.

Haha Darwin, newbies trying to make you their biotch! Fools will learn quick it costs L$5 for that! ..ahh to be young, and foolish, again.
Nice post there Jellin. As well a former EQ'r but also 1.5 years of UO, and many years of mudding. SL's it for me though! A lot like mudding (I was heavily into scripting for that). It's all about imagenation and fun in SL, not xp grinding.

Hey Jellin,
Thing I don't understand is this. I'd assume a lot, or almost all, SLers must have played Quake, Planetside, CS, EQ, DAoC, Shadowbane and all that. Anyone that has been around computer gaming for the last 5 years HAD to have played the games you mention. I've played them all too, and I was able to come to SL and actually see what it really is.
I don't get why people come to SL and assume its something its not. Didn't they read the website? Didn't they get clues from doing the orientation thing? Or is there press out there claiming SL is 'the next EQ' or some such and people come here believing it.
People should just use their heads.

Working theory: Darwin's a Murphy magnet -- "If anything can possibly go wrong, it will." Backup theory: Fluoride in the water. Radiation from phones. Aliens. but it's 6AM, I haven't slept in over 24 hours, I get punchier by the second. Good night, SL!

People should just use their heads. Yes, but madox, you're a freak to begin with. I mean, admit it - when you heard about a world with scriptable objects and physics you drooled. The social aspect is secondary to the depth of the simulation. You're coming in from a different angle than most of the k1dd13s. On the other hand I bet a lot of new people look at the avatars on display on the site, think "hrm, so I can just make a cloak withOUT having to kill three dragons and a unicorn to get the ingredients? I'm in for that!". The site doesn't accurately convey the DEPTH of the world. So the kiddies read something about the outlands and maybe something about a bomb that takes out entire servers (even if it's use is fowned upon) and in they come. whereas me, I just have a benevelent god complex and like making grandiose things like 10m light-giving spheres and naming it "the Sun"

Look, you! Either start playing SL again or stop reading the boards. I don't think anyone appreciates you lollygagging around and generally slacking off. Maybe I should come over there and arrange for you to get your work load lightened. I can do that you know

I get IMs from EZ Money's new trial accounts every day - in which he refers to myself and Schwartz Guillaume being his "bitches" - before I mute him, so I'm not at all surprised. Yesterday I had someone pop in, ask me if I was an agent; I told him I was more of an actor-director... I can do that you know I don't know if you'd get past the new security measures. The boss gets more and more paranoid as time goes on. He now has a Decoy Office. It still has his name on it, but he is elsewhere now, watching, waiting for something to happen. and if you did come by, I now have 6 bodyguards - remember, with the added workload of my manager-hood there also come some small benefits. Ocassionally I get free chips. And I have people to throw in front of people like you trying to do me harm!

well . . .

When I first started SL I didn't really know what to expect either. In fact, I had *no* idea what to expect. I heard about it via There (where is where the l33rs -- ok I don't even really know what that means unless it like eq d00ds who are into phat l33wts? -- probably woud have more fun -- at least There's clientele seems to be more in that general vein). I knew it would be something like There but had no idea how much like it or not like it. The only way I had to explain it to people was to say its sort of like a cross between EQ and There but without the mobs and the d00ds, lol.
That being said, I actually put my first person on mute the other day -- a newbie who was clearly in the 15-17 range in maturity if not actual age who decided to plop into the middle of a class and start shooting a gun. What is it with shooting guns in a sim where you can't kill anyone? I don't get this at all. Can someone explain this to me? Is it showing off the gun? As if we've never seen one before? Or is it like the griefers in There who try to bounce you out of a zone with their paintguns? Except lamer because it doesn't do anything to anyone? I also met a newbie the other day who actually begged me for money! I had an EQ flashback and nearly fell out of my chair.
Ok enough of the ranting . . .I'm still under 30 days and I think that qualifies me as a semi-newbie myself, lol.

This can actually be done. It's called a push-bullet, and it works even in non-damage zones. However, the activity you're talking about constitutes harrassment, and is of a nature that the Lindens will normally suspend accounts for. From: someone Originally posted by Zana Feaver I also met a newbie the other day who actually begged me for money! I had an EQ flashback and nearly fell out of my chair.
I met one of these a few weeks ago. When she didn't get much money that way, she started offering to strip for tips.
